Random Longshot Prediction: GTA VI will drop the "VI" & just become "Grand Theft Auto"

Haven't posted a thread in 1-1/2yrs and just thought to myself, what we really need is another GTA thread..!

I noticed recently when perusing some of the GTA VI art that the "VI" in the title hasn't been integrated into the logo in the same way as previous games.

In a lot of the art the VI is used separately, like in these examples where it's used at the bottom and the "grand theft auto" text is by itself, also with the old drop shadow/outline removed. There are other versions of these that have either dates or trailer designations intersecting with the VI:

And then in the trailers the VI rolls in before the "grand theft auto" text rolls in above:

While this larger logo with the VI as a backdrop may be the official one, it generally doesn't work well in silhouette form, making it less adaptive to different uses, so I'd be surprised if it ends up being the core logo used for the game. The only official uses of the larger logo like this with the VI in the back is at the end of the trailers and as a small mark at the bottom of the website. All other official art is just "grand theft auto" either with a VI in a separate part of the frame or by itself entirely.

Along with the rumours of this being an expansive long-term game where multiple cities/states are added in as travel or character-switch destinations (such as Liberty City) and the general likelihood that it's probably going to be another decade+ game, I wonder if they're just using the "VI" as a differentiator up until close to launch...

My crazy prediction is that "Grand Theft Auto VI" will just be "Grand Theft Auto" nearer launch:

A 15yr+ project that will scale very well technologically across future platforms and will bring in completely new locales and story lines over time; and of course a very expansive GTA Online...

Maybe we see Liberty City, Los Santos/San Andreas etc. And I'd personally love to see other places completely new to the series too, a version of Louisiana with a focus on New Orleans would be awesome!

Perhaps "GTA" simply becomes one giant interactive launcher for the entire franchise and you just swap to other characters that are added at a later date just as you would between Jason & Lucia, allowing you to run all stories concurrently. You'll switch to your online character/s just the same too and the context in which you get to interact with the world will simply differ between all of this. They could also integrate full remakes of prior games in in this way. In addition, a nice touch would be standard ports of prior titles being playable on your console in the game.

With capable SSDs, the switching could be completely seamless.

There's no GTA This or GTA That, just "GTA" all the time, and as time goes on, it's all the characters and all the places, you switch to a character, you go where you wanna go and if there is something there for that character you get to interact with it.

You buy a $30 DLC for a whole new story line, a new character or characters to switch to and a new locale as an available destination.

Anywho, thank you for attending my ramblings.

It's going to be come Grand Theft Auto 1 after Claude is given the power of the Elder Gods and reshapes time to avoid the mistakes of Trevor.

Does anyone actually like when they pull that bullshit? Since GTA3 was the one that really blew up maybe they should call it Grand Theft Auto Three. Spell it out to differentiate from the original 3. And it'd be cool. Like Xbox One.

Counter proposal. We call that shit Grand Theft Auto VI: Vice City II

It does look cleaner without the VI so I'm team Grand Theft Auto. It'll be easier to just say GTA for the next ten years without adding the whole six.

nah. the only name change that would make sense is to change it to GTA Vice City.
they could even do a name reveal at the end of the next trailer where it starts just spelling GTA VI and then the CE CITY slowly fades in.

I really dig the idea of a never-ending GTA that gets new stories, cities and characters added similar to the DLC for GTA 4 but in a grander long-term scale like World of Warcraft. Plus Rockstar has shown how to upgrade a game over time when they ported GTA 5 from PS3 to PS4 to PS5 the game today looks nothing like it did on the PS3 originally.

But the VI is a powerful indicator so simple to understand for dumb teenagers (I was a dumb teenager) and for the average joe who comes home from his blue collar shift and knows nothing about gaming (he's a great drinking buddy and your best mate to bring to the football game) except the only game he plays is FIFA and GTA, so having that shiny new VI up there is super important.

Dropping the VI after 3-4 years when they've added new content and storylines that don't relate to Jason and Lucia anymore or after the new consoles launch in 2028 seems perfectly reasonable to me, like it's not an unimaginable scenario.

Completely agree with this. Once all the remastered, definitive edition, path tracing edition, and super turbo versions of GTA6 are all done being released, I can see a future where newer DLCs and sequels are just released as GTA:Return to San Andreas or so on.
