Rants from a disillusioned aging gamer…

It's not just games. If you look around, it's most other media, too. Movies, music, TV shows, books -- they have all experienced a degradation in quality over the past couple of decades.

That's not to say there aren't still good games out there. Sure there are. But I agree that there's been a decline in quality (creativity/fun/immersion) on average, overall.

Yea hardware is a rough spot atm. But I also see the brightside. The $50 price point games breaking through (E33, Mafia, Hell Is Us), and F2P games that are worth playing (Where WInds Meet), and some quality VR titles still trickling out (Metro, Daredevil).

Eastern devs and a lot of indie devs are still delivering. Hopefully Sony and others are pulling away from GaaS, at least most of the effort.

Not to get all "acthually" on you but Hell is Us is and has been $60 bro. Which is still better than normal.

It's also on sale now on PSN for $42! :messenger_grinning_smiling: ...and it's awesome

People who were too focused on activism got into the development cycle. From there it's just getting promotions and only hiring others who share your views. Now people who just want to make great content are driven out or keeping their heads down. Thankfully the stacking of failure upon failure is finally hitting the bottom line. We'll hopefully be seeing better content in the not too distant future.

I'm extremely satisfied with gaming these days.

I'm old and gaming is great now. You've got 40+ years of retro stuff available at the tips of your fingers, tons of it for free or dirt cheap.

Sure, most of triple A games are soulless cash grabs, but there are still some great current releases.
You've got Owlcat and Larian ushering in another rpg renaissance, and the Indy scene is popping off like crazy.
No doubt about it, you gotta sift a lot of chaff to find the good stuff, but it's there.

I just bought a $60 RG handheld and played Neutopia 1 and 2, old Turbografx Zelda clones that I've never played. The thing has 17 retro libraries on it, it was $60 bucks. Life is good.

I can't understand how people can be so cynical about gaming today. There are more ecosystems to play in than there were in the past.
Sure, more to choose from than ever before. I think a huge portion of the frustration on here comes from the fact that many of us were used to being catered to by this industry within the mainstream of releases. That has surely gone. You can still find plenty good stuff everywhere, but for many as long as that doesn't apply to the big AAA mainstream / blockbuster type games, they're not satisfied. They wish this industry would still cater to their interests when it has long moved on to different target demographics, and that includes different monetization methods and so on.
