Rare comments on the possibility of Perfect Dark DS.

A recent email directed to Rareware posted on the developer's official website contained a question pertinent to many fans of the Nintendo DS. A fan of the company asked if they would ever port Perfect Dark over to the DS.

The company responded rather vaguely. "I couldn't think of anything new to say about the prospect of PD on the DS, so I passed it over to the handheld team, who couldn't think of anything new to say either: "It would be cool to do a version of PD on the DS, who knows, we might even do it one day!""

As usual, further details about the possibility of Perfect Dark DS were not revealed. However, the developer's reaction certainly breathes new life into the rumor of the games existance in the future.

Nintendo and Rare fans really are searching and digging deep to find anything they can make a rumor with. Perfect Dark DS? Cool, count me in. But i doubt it's coming.

so people care about rare now? that's cool.
:lol What?

Rare has made Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64. Both are awesome. And since those Rare guys have the rights and everything, they could port it. Which would be interesting for me, since I never played Perfect Dark, and also interesting for all DS users, since there is still no good multiplayer FPS out on the DS.

Its like watching a veteran fisherman cast his line into a huge lake then jerking the line just to have some fun.:lol Rare could be just barely serious about this move.

And this could go really badly if Nintendo fans expect too much here. Rare are probably about the quick and nasty ports since they've probably got other X360 stuff to work on after they eventually get Perfect Dark 0 out the door.

For your information, Rare has pumped out more titles on the GBA than the Xbox ever since Rare was bought by Micro$oft.

Wow, this crap passes for news on the 'advanced' network?

Since when have they had any credibility? It's just a bunch of kids copying and pasting stories like any other fansite.

Angelus they have a seperate team for handheld titles. It even says so in the article.

Yup and they just hired people for their DS team. Means most of their guys will be noobs. Don't count on previous achievements. And even most Goldeneye/PerfectDark guys are gone from Rare already anyway.

Well what are the games then, please tell me. Are they original game or ports? I'd like to know.:)

edit-waiiiit a minute,I'm speaking of RARE,now some guys they hire off the streets to do work for them. This isn't Rare then in my book.

Though I must admit-having *RARE*...and not some hired gun develpment house port over Jetforce Gemini to the DS would be quite lovely though. I hope they don't do shitty ports,it would ruin some of their great games they made for the N64 back in the day.

Holy Inordinate Defensive Measures, Batman!

.. right, and Rare has only gotten progressively worse, since. Hell, just when you thought Grabbed by the Ghoulies was an all new low for the industry, the PD0 phenomenon pretty well botched the Xbox 360 unveiling. Or Conker; It took them 3 fucking years to do a carbon copy port of a so-so N64 game that was really only interesting because of how lewd it was at the time, but now doesn't discriminate itself in the market at all.

If anything, being genuinely interested and supportive of Rare is the exception, not the rule. Sorry.

Edit:

By that logic, Rare itself is no longer a company, as everyone who's ever done anything interesting or contributed to the industry with a new, fresh idea has long since left. See: Free Radical, Zoonami.

Well, I don't have faith in the Rare of today, but can't they just PORT it over? How hard can a direct port be?

Hmmm, are they true sequels or enhanced ports?
I suppose if RARE themselves worked on them then they would add new elements to the games.

Not really. How many left RARE. I bet its not nearly as many as some make it out to be.

DKC 1-3 are basically ports. The other three aren't.

There are a few paticular problems:

1. PD more or less required the RAM expansion pack to play, which means that (while I believe the DS does have that much RAM), there'd be pretty much zero leg room for adding features, control methods, or other new stuff without cutting out the old.

2. PD relied on fuckton lots of texture tricks and filtering because of the geometric limitations of the system. When the game came out, I thought they just looked muddy and shitty, but even pulling that off on the DS would be very difficult.

3. Assuming the DS would be powerful enough to overcome 1 & 2 and perfectly emulate the original, it still had a really terrible framerate (often in the low teens, relative to my experience with computer FPSes that let you measure easily). The game stuttered along so badly that it's the only FPS I can think of that I heard multiple Americans got nauseous from.

4. While it was a successful title, it neither met initial sales expectations or exceeded the sale of its spiritual predecessor, Goldeneye.

5. "Someday" most likely means "after PD0 is completed, on the shelf, and twice made a Greatest Hits title," because I'm sure that Rare is skating on ice so thin right now that Microsoft's PR department doesn't want any confusion in the market as to who is Perfect Dark's daddy and what system it is on (360). If the port turns out to not be impressive, it would also reflect poorly on PD's already questional "brand image" (heh) and possibly hurt the legacy of the new 360 game.

To be completely honest, I think a new KI game is more likely. *Slaps knee.*

Allright thats cool then. Theyre shooting around .500 with their efforts. Not bad I guess.

I just want to say that I'm not a RARE hater, its just that they are slow as shit to get anything original out. I think they were overated back in the day though. They were cool but not great to me. Perfect Dark 0,if its fun then thats all I ask, they won't ever reinvent the wheel. Which is way I think someare asking to much of them when it comes to the DS,they have enough with their hands being on the X360.

You forgot one...

-Donkey Kong Country (Nintendo) 2003
-Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge (THQ) 2003
-Sabre Wulf (THQ) 2004
-Donkey Kong Country 2 (Nintendo) 2004
-Banjo Pilot (THQ) 2005
-It's Mr Pants! (THQ) 2005
-Donkey Kong Country 3 (Nintendo) 2005

...Rare's handheld team on GBA was about 10 staff, they've recently expanded that for DS development. The handheld division is entirely seperate from the console teams however.

There's no point in putting Perfect Dark on the DS, unless they could fix the framerate during multiplayer.

Mario saw improved models and a higher framerate in its N64 -> DS transition. I would expect at least a framerate fix and online multiplayer here.

"Just imagine a 16-player wireless GoldenEye or PD, how cool would that be?"
Ye Gods, don't say that. You'll only encourage one of those bloody online petitions. I mean, we're all for killing and moral degradation, but we couldn't convert GoldenEye even if we wanted to (at least not without years of absolutely hilarious licensing wrangles) and we should probably get PD0 sorted out before we think about revisiting the original. Still, that's not to rule out the idea entirely, as nothing stays in the past forever in this business. But that's not a hint either. Stop it! Stop harassing me!"

Considering that the DS version would be running at a lower res and without the filtering of the N64 version, there's no reason why it shouldn't be a steady 30fps.

And the fact that everyone would be playing it on their own handheld rather than the n64 having to handle splitscreen. If I recall correctly you could play multiplayer PD without the expansion pak so the 4mb of DS ram could do multiplayer levels easily.

I thought I should point out the reaction in 2ch Gaming forum :lol

MS salts its enemy.

Post5: This is depressing. MS is sending RARE to help DS to defeat Sony in the portable market and pull the carpet from under the PSP. This will increase the DS popularity in foreign countries.

Don't you mean that if the 360 game turns out as bad as it looks like it will, a DS remake would probably suffer?

ROFL. I can imagine the response would be the same on this side of the pacific.

If they ported it, might make a tiny dent in the huge loss for Microsoft. Probably be their biggest seller..
