Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

Finally purchased a Pi 2 B and tried both RetroPie and Recalbox. The audio seemed fine on RetroPie but sounds really tinny on Recalbox.

Any suggestions on audio or is this just the way it is with emulation on this thing?

Glad I stumbled across this thread. Thinking of getting my nieces one of these to keep them busy when they visit my mom. How do the games look while playing on a hdtv via this? I'm not too sure they'll notice things most retro gamers would.

It's surprising how well some of the stuff holds up, particularly 2D SNES games. PSX and N64 is a bit more hit and miss. Metal Gear Solid looks pretty rough while WipeOut 3 still holds up very well.

So, I don't know if this is the place to ask this, but I'd be glad for some help.

I want to turn my Rasberry into a Steam streaming device, but with Kodi. Has anyone tried it? Are there any easy to follow tutorial to achieve this? Ideally, it'll boot into Kodi and I could launch Steam streaming from there.

Yesterday a Swedish site Sweclockers, mentioned that they've been told from sources that Raspberry Pi 3 Model B will be released this spring.
I've tried and googled this for more articles but haven't found any.
Are there more about this rumour somewhere?
It would be released very soon, shift between February-March and will cost about 100 sek more than Pi 2 model b.
So 499 sek instead of 399 sek.

Good hope the rumour is true! With all these single board computers on the market i'm glad it's putting pressure on the Raspberry Pi Foundation. From what i original read about the Pi 2 they said they originally wanted to release it in 2017 or something lol.

That would be very nice. I'd also like them to continue work on improving the RPi Zero as well. That small form factor is great.

Huh...I was contemplating an Nvidia Shield tablet for my portable emulation station, but this thread popped up as I was about to make a thread. How does the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B handle N64, PSX, DC, and PSP emulation?

Also, real talk - in the US, how much will components cost to put one of these together (with the screen and shit)? And how portable will it be?

Not sure about those platforms since I mostly play older gens, but it'd definitely take a lot of time and effort to make a portable system. If you aren't particularly handy, I'd just buy that Shield. If you'd like a challenge, then go for it :P
Either use the official 7" RPi screen, or an 8" LCD+board from eBay if you want 4:3 aspect ratio. I don't recommend the small TFT Shields (e.g. PiTFT) as they don't play nicely with OpenGL. You can use fbcp to copy the framebuffer from the HDMI output to the TFT Shield, but that has a bad effect on framerate.
And then you'd have to hack together a custom case with controls, which most likely won't look very nice. Vacuforming polystyrene or epoxy frankenhacking an ABS case can get messy real fast, and 3D printing requires a lot of finishing and is expensive. Laser-cutting acrylic sheets might be the most effective way to get a nice case though.

Good news if true. Why would it be called Model B if it's the first version though?

Wonder if it'll be able to handle N64/PS1/Dreamcast better. Seems like issues with those are more on the software side though.

If going portable is your goal, it'd probably be a lot easier to go with the Shield Tablet. I haven't had any real issues with any of the consoles you've mentioned running on it, and find that pairing it with the 8BitDo NES30PRO is a super nice way to play stuff on the go.

There are definitely people in this thread that can give you a better idea of how building a portable Pi ought to fare. It sounds doable, but also a lot of work.

That said, I still prefer using my Pi for emulation if I'm using it on my TV. Just got a Shield TV, so I'm working on setting that up, but Retropie has been really fantastic and easy to use once I got the hang of it.

Fair enough - thank you! I am handy enough and can solder my way around PCBs, but when it comes to cost, I may just stick with a Shield. I may still look into Raspberry Pi for a bartop MAME (assuming it can do that).

If you only want to emulate the basics like nes, master system, megadrive and some snes and most gba games you can get a pi zero for a fiver, it doesn't have wifi built in but you can easily enough use a usb stick to send data across, once you install retropie to a sd card you can config and play without a keyboard very easily.

That would be very nice. I'd also like them to continue work on improving the RPi Zero as well. That small form factor is great.

If they can make the zero 2 have a dual core for the same price, damn son.

It can definitely do bartop MAME -

Both PiCade (UK) and PortaPi (US) were Kickstarter projects and you can still buy them. Or build your own.

Not sure where that"s come from, I thought the next model of the Pi wasn't going to be released until 2017

Yes, but I rom finding and matching is a pain in the ass for it. Cfor example I have name in PC with full working romsets, but only a handful of them work on the Pi.

Would you recommend holding out for the next iteration of the pi for better mame emulation?
I really want to replace my stand up mame cab and a pi seems to be the perfect solution.

I'm only interested in the old old roms (I'm old) so until the late 80's Outrun, Ghouls n' Ghosts, Wardner and possibly up to Turtles /Simpsons. If it can run those flawlessly I will buy one today!

I was thinking about buying a replacement SNES since my original one crapped out on me. Since I've seen this thread though I'm thinking about buying one of these.

Can I play any game on the SNES? I would love to play Ninja Warriors, Super Valis IV and U.N. Squadron again. I may order one tonight if this is possible.

I've been waiting for this. The Zero threw me off, I was worried that was all there'd be new for a while.

I played Quake III and whenever I try connecting to a multiplayer match I constantly get errors about not having the appropriate map file. I turned on file downloading and even put in a cd key.

Anywhere sell these items all done up just needing roms? I'm interested in one but I just don't have the time to do it right now and would prefer to just order one that works. (I'm really busy with work and school so when I have a moment to play I want to be able to jump right in rather than fiddle around first.

Just how little time do you have? For me with 3.3.1, it was literally:
  1. Download image
  2. Write image to SD card
  3. Take Raspberry Pi out of box
  4. Put SD card in RPi
  5. Hardwire RPi to ethernet
  6. Plug in XBone controller and keyboard
  7. Plug in HDMI to TV
  8. Power on RPi
  9. Expand filesystem, reboot
  10. Open \\RETROPIE in Windows Explorer
  11. Transfer files
  12. Reboot
You're going to do like 6-7 of those even with an "out of the box" product. And it's been streamlined even more since I did it.

You dont need step 9 anymore with 3.5.

So, I'm using Recalbox (3.3.0 beta17), but I have no idea how to install/use add-ons in Kodi. Is this possible, and if so how do you do it?

Maybe I'll give it a try. Seems simple.

As for how much time? Very little some days ha-ha.

I've finally started to get this setup again, and man it takes forever to install all the cores. Ugh.

What is the Pi 2 safely overclockable to? I saw all the options in that menu, but couldn't tell which one to use.

Would be nice....but a little late. I just picked up an Nvidia shield because of shoddy performance on PSX and 64 for RPi2. So far the thing has been amazing....hell even dolphin runs on the fricken thing halfway decent.

Think I will build a box or something for my RPi2 though......would be a great machine for my old school fighters when buddies come over.

What RPI3 really needs:

Quad-core at 1.5ghz
Intergrated wifi/bluetooth chip
maybe a small 8gb flash chip on board.

This would make a huge difference.

I would also like like to see a mini Raspberry Pi 2 before we get a 3.

I love these little things so much to tinker with. But what I really need is pie zero with lcd support and audio out. I have been working on a keychain gameboy using a sega dreamcast vmu as a case. I might just go with a android watch to do it but finding one with usb in support is a pita.

I'm getting one of these soon (the A64+):

What I really want:

Someone to stuff one of them new pies into a snes controller, have it up and running...

Id gladly pay for it. Just pm me.
