Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

So in theory, that Pi Zero will run stuff like NES and SNES slightly better than a n3DS.. right? Same processor but a bit faster?

Holy crap. I think I'm going to go out and try and find that magazine at lunch. That's crazy.

I might do the same, even though I have no idea what to do with it. Just the idea that they are giving away a comouter on the front of a magazine is nuts.

Probably an exoensive mag though?

Yeah I realise that I have none of the other things I'd need to make it do anything, but for some reason the idea of having a £4 computer is appealing to me. No idea what I'd do with it especially as I'm already planning on getting the 2 to use for retro gaming.

It depends on how well the original Pi ran NES and SNES stuff. This is identical to that, but a little faster.

It's not worth comparing the processor in this to an actual handheld, they're completely different and have different overheads.

Hmmm, I wonder if it fits inside a NES controller...

easily i might say. I think i'll buy one and see if it fits inside those SFC30 bluetooth pads ;D wicked sick emulation box coming:

Went and grabbed a couple copies. Even better is I just used change from my change cup at Tesco's to get it

This was my first thought as well. It would be crazy cool to have the controller be the entire computer.

In the magazine they show how it can fit into an NES bluetooth controller to make it all self contained.

I found a pi zero at my tesco! ha

I just hooked it up, and set up retropie. It works fantastically with NES, GB/GBC and Mega Drive. I'm satisfied. This shit is insane. This cost me, plus the magazine, less than a fucking pizza from dominos. whaaaat?!

I'll be putting this into a DMG gameboy. All I need is a compatible screen (I need to ask pihut whether the existing ones work with the zero) and a bit of wiring shit. This is crazy.

Jelly,

Definitely gonna try to make a gaming portable.

heh, mine will be simple

I have a non-working DMG shell. I now have a tiny ass PC to put in it. All I need is this:

http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/common-ground-dmg-button-pcb

and a screen (may need to hack away at the DMG shell to get one to fit...gulp). And a battery and compatible AC controller of course. In terms of difficulty, my SNES Pi console was ridiculously more complex.

Want to get my son this kit but I'm so lost with this stuff. He doesn't have an actual PC just an Alienware alpha. So will he be able to do anything with this device or does he need an actual PC.

its a linux pc, as long as you set it up with the right distro.

or its a homebrew emulation device

or whatever.

for what its worth, my grandparents needed a PC for general web browsing, documents, etc. I just set them up a raspberry pi b2 and a cheap monitor. Sorted.

If I want do do game emulation, can I just download them via usb and install them to the device?

I'll have to take a look at my local tesco tomorrow to see if the magPi magazine is there, if not i'll order one online and bite the postage costs for it, too good to not buy one even if i'm a newb.... oh it's otu of stock :(

Thats amazing and all, but would of rather have seen a RPi3 announced

I'd imagine next year in the spring, maybe they can try to get a yearly model out there.

Inside the magazine it actually has a section on how you can do just that, Page 40. I can't post scans but if you do get it, Page 40 is where it's at.

Got myself one today, quite excited when I woke up this morning and saw an article about it, went to Tesco on my way to Uni to get it, now I can't find any other magazines elsewhere for my brother.

Insane. I was also discussing essentially what PiZero is with a friend last week, after watching From Bedrooms to Billions on Netflix, how it'd be great for a super cheap PC like the Pi but even cheaper and would be nice to kickstart a new hobbyist hacking community focusing on programming like in the days of the ZX Spectrum and BBC Micro. Low and behold, Raspberry Pi Foundation are way ahead of us.

Wow, it really is tiny.

I hope they ramp up production on this. Got a few ideas I'd like to try out, and I need a couple of these :P

So, do we know exactly what emulators run perfectly and what don't on the original Pi (as an idea to what runs on the Zero)? This looks like a godsend for any kind of all-in-one joystick. You can practically DIY these sorts of things:
GAT4ailm.jpg

This also changes things like building that Storm Trooper tabletop arcade thingy. Oh god, the possibilities! I think I'm going to use this (if I can find one):

Just hoping Amiga emulators run okay on it.

How is the zero powered, via usb or does it have an adaptor? I didn't see info on that part on the pages I looked at.

Micro-USB-powered.

That's a great idea, I knew having three of these would come in handy someday!

For a Mame machine running anything up to Neo Geo & CPS 2, is the Zero okay?

This is kinda what I'm dying to know. I saw NES, Genesis, and GB worked, which is enough to justify the $5 (if I could find one of the damn things without a bundle), but if I could get Mame running I've got an old arcade stick that would make a perfect home for it, especially considering I never use it.

Pi2 works these games well in retropie using overclocked settings. But itll still slow down in some games with a lot going on and playing 2 player. Alien vs predator slows down here and there. So im guessing pi0 will have some slowdown with some games.

If the Pi 3 is able to be used as an actual computer without it getting overloaded in the UI with trying to run one or two applications, I'd be there. It's a bit disappointing that people go "oh, it's a cheap computer!" but ignore that it's mostly good for robotics and programming functions and not a "cheap for third world countries 'computer' computer."

Is that magazine in the UK at all?

The Mag Pi is a UK publication. The rest of the world gets a free .pdf each month. The Pi Zero came in a first printing that sold out pretty quick around the UK and Ireland/Wales today.

Spent yesterday looking for a zero in magazine stores :( I can see them listed on ebay for £30 :/ Probably have to wait a month.

A real shame as I really wanted to see how it performs especially since I'm making a handheld:

Cool, sounds good to me. Got my copy of the magazine so I'll have a good look through the Raspberry Gaming Thread.

EDIT - My first hurdle. Win32 Disk Imager.

I'm a Mac user. What's the equivalent OS X version?

I see Clonezilla on a list of possible alternatives. I've used that before with great success, though not with this project in mind. Alternatively, there's software called ApplePi-Baker. I haven't used it, but it looks like it was created for the exact use you're needin' it for.
