Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

At this time, the 3 offers no real benefit using retro pie. The N64 emulation still stinks. I'm hopping for a new core to become available for N64 soon.

Imho N64 emulation is better, still not perfect but usable, it very much depends on how much slowdown you can tolerate ...

£40 for 314GB of space is good, I paid 1/3 of that for a reasonable speed SD card, that HDD would last for quite a while between a ton of models.

My Pi got delivered yesterday, on Pi day of all days, but I was too sick to get to the mailbox.

Today I'll finally get to it.

Just got a wired iBuffalo SFC controller from Amazon yesterday and I want to join the chorus in saying it's a great controller. For around $10 you really can't beat it. Besides the shoulder buttons everything feels real close to the original.

How do you sit at one of these? I want to do something but all the Ikea hacks are so low to the ground.

Ha, good question! It's too low for a chair, but too high to sit on the floor.

Personally, I would use a different piece of IKEA furniture for the basis of it, but all of the fundamentals of the mod remain the same, provided you are using the same cheap/hollow pre-fab table top.

Got my Raspberry Pi 3 yesterday! Planning to set up RetroPie this weekend, probably.

Can this run CPS2/NeoGeo MVS games okay? Is there a Final Burn Alpha core I can use?

I couldn't find anything from IKEA with suitable height.

I got this case for my Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, and while it is for a Pi 2 Model B, with some very minor cutting it will fit the 3.

I just received my Pine64+ that I'd forgotten I'd backed. Hopefully retro gaming support is at least somewhat comparable to that of the Pi!

Neogeo games run great with FBA in retropie. I have it running on pi2 on my bartop. Fba is my preffered emulator

What's the preferred build to use? I know there's piFBA and the Libretro FBA, I never know which ones to use (for that and other emulators, too).

Really wish I could find the Pi Zero someplace in stock and reasonably priced. (as in the $5 it's supposed to cost). Been wanting to do a portable pi project for a while.

An update on my bartop cabinet (not that any of you care but I feel like sharing anyway).

Got my Pi 3 and my arcade inputs in the mail a couple of days ago. I've got Retropie set up and running nicely and I've just finished putting together the control panel. Now all that's left is to build the cabinet itself and wait for my missing pieces to arrive from China so I can put it all together. I'm pretty busy so it could be a couple of months but it's going to be sweet when it's done.

Well anyway here's the control panel. It's not quite perfect but I don't think you'll notice unless you take a set square and ruler to it (or at least I hope you wont). Haven't tried it on the Pi itself just yet but it works like a charm on my PC.

Look great, one question though, why 4 white buttons at the bottom, I assume they are 1player, 2 player, coin and start ? They look strange at the bottom, probably too late but on all arcade cabinets those buttons are always at the top, to make sure they don't get in the way ...

Also what art are you going to put on the control panel .. ;-)

Good question. I have a dedicated Coin button, that's going on the front panel just beneath the control panel. I'm still not 100% what to do with the extra white buttons in arcade games but they're mainly there so I can have all buttons represented for SNES and 6 button Megadrive games (1p and 2p will act as start, the plain whites will act as select for each controller, that's why I have them so close together). Probably unnecessary but I'm pedantic like that (Super Metroid needs to be playable on this thing. I don't care how sub-optimal that is).

I may use them as dedicate escape and menu buttons in Arcade, though the positioning is not ideal for that and that will also lead to an inconstancy between console games and arcade games that would drive me up the wall. I still have 5 unaccounted for inputs on my controller board so I'm considering grabbing some little push buttons to act as true dedicated escape, pause, restart, retropie config and service menu that work across all emulators. That'd leave the white buttons completely unused in arcade games, though.

As for art, probably none (Boo!). I don't have an easy way to print out decals and I'm not painting anything myself. I'm thinking I'll be spraying the front panels gloss black and will stain and seal the side panels but my plans could change if a better option appears.

Anyway, here's another pic, this time with everything I've actually got so far set up.

Make it Boo themed. Boos all over it.

Also I didn't know that the coin slot on these MAME machines was physical, I thought it was just an LED show thing, but it occurred to me that it's functional and mapped to "insert coin", clever.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. Was originally just going to use a regular button but then I spotted the dedicated button on the suppliers site and I had to get it.

Hmm, mine should arrive soon as well then, where are you based??

I know the Pine has a few OS you can use on it, i wonder what will be best for RetroArch, probably Android

Australia. But I got in on the "February" delivery date, which wound up being mid-March.

I still think the white buttons look a bit odd, but, it looks like you have a plan. You can get control panel art printed out online for low cost, then just buy a piece or perspex or acrylic from a local DIY store, with a bit of patience it will end up looking as good as a real arcade, I made a Fix It Felix Cabinet a while ago, picture of the control panel below ..

What's even cooler is that you can wire a proper coin slot up, in my MAME cabinet at home, I have it wired so that 20p is 1 credit, 50p is 3 and a pound coin (100p) is 7 credits, pretty cool and a good way to save some change. Insert money, credits appear, the coin colt can be programmed for any type of coin, yen, dollar, even the arcade tokens you used to get ...

Im new to raspberry, is there a way to keep the raspberry pi working after disconnecting it? I need an easy to use UPS. and one I can by from within the states. I don't want to import.

Is there an easy way to get a more modern build of mame on my retropie install that DOESN'T involve compiling from source? I let lr-mame2010 build twice on my pi zero overnight using the built in script, and both times it failed to find/copy a file over. Apparently this can be due to outdated installation scripts, but I made sure to update before doing it each time.

I was reading the Magpi magazine and there is a hat you can buy for your Pi that has a battery installed on it to keep it powered for like 8 hours unplugged.

Anyone have an example of a CPS2 game they were able to get running with Final Burn Alpha while using the "neogeo.zip" BIOS set? I haven't had luck with any of them.

I think I got Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters running on FBA. A lot of other CPS2 games weren't working on FBA for me even with the right romset, so I just decided to use MAME for those.

Got my Pi 3! Got everything to start playing around with the Pi; charger, case, memory card.

Still waiting on my ibuffalo snes controllers even though I ordered them a month ago!... due date was Mar 20-Mar 28....

I've had no trouble with CPS2 games in FBA alpha, though I can't say I've tried out too many of them yet (just various versions of SFII, MvsSF and Dark Stalkers).

Something like this looks interesting, basically make the PI fully portable, would be interstin to see what the battery life is like running emulators though ..

Hasn't RetroPi been update yet to take advantage of the RPi3???

RetroPie is Pi3 compatible, however you'll need to wait for 64-bit version of Debian etc, I doubt that is happening anytime soon, essentially the RPI3 advantage is a higher clock speed ..

I wonder if someone can help, after installing recalbox on a Pi2B+ , when scrolling through the menus of emulationstation and Kodi there's sometimes a very long delay or pause before the press is recognised. This happens with a PS3 pad or a usb keyboard. I've got an identical Pi with the exact same setup (same make/model sd card too) and yet that works pretty much flawlessly. it makes no sense at all. Anyone?

Anyone with tips on getting performance out of Reicast?

I got reicast to render in 640x480 hoping the lower resolution would give it an easier time, but it seems to hit the same speedbumps.

I haven't overclocked yet, I need heatsinks and fans before that.

Crud!

I updated my Retropie from a perfectly running 3.0 beta and after the long binary update and everything appearing to work correctly, the splash screen fails to load, then Emulation Station goes to the white screen of death. Thank God I backed up all my hard work.

I wonder what in the heck happened? Any clues you guys may have?

The only thing I've read about causing the white screen is having more than 10 themes installed.

I thought the white screen of death was due to having more than ~10 systems while using a theme with different wallpapers for each system (i.e. the "simple" theme.) Workarounds were to use a different theme (like the "carbon" theme,) remove systems, or change a particular memory setting.

I also got it one time when switching between a bunch of different themes while trying to settle on one. Fixed it with a simple reboot.

I've had 0 luck getting the 8Bitdo SNES30 work with Retropie. The closest I get is D-pad control in joystick mode (Mode 1), no other buttons work. The other modes make Retropie throw errors during pairing, except for Start+R, but that is also unresponsive during button assignment.

I followed a guide by Floob on youtube to no avail. Anyone run into trouble with one of these controllers?

I'm going from memory so hopefully it'll be of some help
1- Start+R is also the way that I use to connect to Retropie
2- I'd suggest going into Retroarch using a keyboard as controller then configuring Inputs by selecting the SNES30 Pro. You save the settings and then use notepad to copy/paste the settings into the proper retroarch.cfg for the concerned emulator. Those settings can be pasted into retroarch.cfg files of other "libretro" emus as well. I use only emulator for testing then paste/adjust the settings into the others.

Good luck!

I had the same issue with Rpi 3 ... seems the Bluetooth controller is fried or not working ... so I cant even get to the 8Bitdo connected to set it up :/

My bluetooth wouldn't work until I went into Retropie Setup and updated the Retropie-setup script, then it worked. The bluetooth, not the 8Bitdo controller. I just use a PS3 controller for now (the setup for that was dead simple).

oh let me try this I got a Pi3 for the BT :/ ... thank you !

BINGO ! finally got a controller working on Pi3 - now onto the 8BitDO

Thank you Psylah !!!! I was on this for 2 days !

Has anyone looked into making custom splash screens/intro?

I found this thread where people came together to make load screens when booting up the Retropie. Most images, some videos (didn't know you could have a video introduction).

Check it out. http://blog.petrockblock.com/forums/forum/retropie-project-forum/splashscreens/

My favorite so far

I think I also saw some images of custom backgrounds when in a system's screen. I'm trying to find some examples.

Ok figured it out ... BT Pairing was painful but thanks for your advice I got the NES30 PRO working (mode 1). for auto reconnect - you have to enable discoverable , agent and trust so you wont have to redo it.

Now the second challenge was that : you can map the buttons in ES but on Emulators only D pad and start works.

You have to remap the buttons in Retro-arch with the following :

http://forum.8bitdo.com/thread-328-1-1.html

Floob was helpful but - just gave half of the answer in the YT vid

Hope this helps ... this is a damn journey to deserve some MAME over wireless controller.

Edit : Also make sure you unplug keyboard and other pads when exiting emulators or it will freeze ES

Thanks for this, I'll try this over the weekend.

Currently running into an issue like yours, random freezing, but with no keyboard plugged in (Bluetooth, usually off). The obvious answer is overheating, as my case looks cool but has zero airflow and I have no heatsinks on it yet.

I'll order a bigger, uglier case, and heatsinks, and a mini fan, but first I'll see if I messed up some config that makes it crash by reinstalling retropie.

the freeze stopped when I unplugged my keyboard and my Saturn USB pad. So go figure.

For the Mapping and bluetooth pairing, it requires sometimes to remove the registered device and start the process clean.
