Rayman 1: hardest platformer ever!

Through some cheats, i was finally able to conquer Rayman 1 (PSOne version) over the holidays!

Flippin' back through some old game magazines, i realize that what the reviewers forgot to mention was the INSANE difficulty level (lots of trial & error)!

Other than that, superb graphics and sound, although that still doesn't make up for the pure frustration it will wreck upon anyone's souls (trust me, it ain't no Mario title).

Ready to move on to Rayman 2:) Anybody know which version iz the best?

I remember a feeling of satisfaction after beating Rayman, especially after the ridiculous levels where the controls were reversed hehe.

Rayman 2 for DC is a great game, if you can I'd play that version.

i remember getting so damn far in the jag version. then stuck.

then bought it for gba, and got stuck in the same spot.

fucking frustrating :lol

I'm not sure which is the best version of Rayman 1 (likely a toss up between PS, Saturn & PC, though the PC version got a rerelease with bonus fan levels and a level editor later on) but the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2 is generally considered the best. For systems that every Rayman platformer's seen release on...

Rayman
-Atari Jaguar
-PC/Windows
-PlayStation
-Sega Saturn
-Game Boy Color
-Game Boy Advance
-mobile

Rayman 2: The Great Escape
-Nintendo 64
-PC/Windows
-Dreamcast
-PlayStation
-PlayStation 2
-Nintendo DS

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
-GameCube
-PlayStation 2
-Xbox
-PC/Windows

Rayman 3 (2D handheld version)
-Game Boy Advance
-NGage
-mobile

...the first Rayman was also in development for 32X and 3DO, but those versions were canceled. Rayman 2 started out as a 2D PS1/Saturn/PC game too iirc, but that was shelved after Mario 64 hit the market.

Rayman is hard as Hell. I think I shelved the Jaguar version sometime after the music-themed level, which is only the second or third "zone" of the game.

What's wrong with the PS2 version of Rayman 2?

I didn't play it very long, but IIRC the main problem was framerate. DC was constant 60fps while PS2 had slowdown. PS2 did bump up the geometry, but IMO it was not worth it. Also (and again IIRC) PS2 added a hub world and a power-up shop, which were poor additions IMO; they tried to fix what wasn't broken and wound up making it worse.

I played the DC version of Rayman 2, and it was quite good, and beautiful for the time.

I agree that Rayman 1 was insane. I did actually beat it, with 100%, without cheats (although I had to FAQ 3 of the cages). I'd just like to tell anyone reading this, don't bother with 100%; it's sooooo not worth the frustration involved. I had much more patience then.

Rayman 1 will eat anyone alive. Sure, the first zone iz fun, but everything after that becomes HELL.

As soon as i realized that, i used cheats, and the game iz still UNBELIEVABLY HARD!

I pay homage to your madskillz Joeholley.

I found the bulk of Rayman 1 to be somewhat tame. One part I did find freakishly hard though is where you have to float over that huge collection of pointy pencils that curve. Wish Rayman never made the jump to 3D, as I haven't enjoyed the 3D ones :(

I have rayman for the Jaguar and I almost completed it 100%. In the very last level I missed something / couldn;t find the last piece.

You people need to play some Ghosts and Goblins from the NES before you bitch about Rayman. It was a cool game though. We need more good platformers. I was pissed when Jak went away from platforming.

Yeah, that genre has seriously dropped off in recent years (the only attempts at it that I can think of are the R&C games and Sonic Heroes, the latter of which was mostly "on rails.") I blame genre oversaturation during the leap from 16-bit to 32-bit

I completed Saturn Rayman 100%. But, I had to use that incredibly hard-to-pull-off 20 lives code because finding the electoons was a lot of trial & error & death. But it was still a lot of fun, and the animation, colors, music, and mood of the game was very well done. It was really difficult, I agree.

Rayman 2 is easier (as are all 3D platformers) and I thought the DC version was awesome stuff.

Here is a link , dredging up an old Saturn fan page of mine that had a little Rayman blurb on it. Back then, NOBODY would talk about the game but it and Astal enraptured me for a few months.

Playing Rayman without cheats iz like playing with your toes. Great work to those who beat it without them (although i question your sanity).

One day i'll go back to finish Rayman with 100%, but i definitely need a faq with visuals to get me there.

With all this talk about Rayman, i think a lot of us here want to return back to 2d platformers. I'll hav to give Jungle Beat a try in a few months:)

No, Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Sega Genesis is the hardest platformer game ever.

I would have agreed with you once. Until I saw my 8 year old son beat it. (!) He really dialed in on the patterns and makes it look easy. (!!)

Apparently the hardest platformer ever was Batman Beyond for the PS1, except that it was never actually released after it received straight 1.0s from EGM.

Which version of Rayman 1 was the best anyways? I've only played the Saturn (own) and PS versions. While I had more time with the Saturn version for obvious reasons, I found the PS version to be a bit dull on the textures. Is the Jaguar version better than both?

I played the PSX & JAg version and can tell you while the PSX version was easily much prettier to llok at, the Jag version was no doubt easier since Rayman didn't lslide on the notes during the music level.

The sliding made it a bitch on the PSX.

RAyman was is easily the absolute best 2d platformer IMO, I loved it from beginning to the end with Mr. Dark :)

Certainly a classic, that's for sure. I remember how I replayed Rayman 1 countless times. I think games, to an extent, have lost something over the years ... as far as replay value in single-player games.

If you play Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast, wich is the best version, just please play it with a VGA box. The graphics quality are just breathaking in hi-res.

Silky smooth for sure! The effects, the frame rate, the graphics...everything makes Rayman 2 scream on VGA.

Well, I've always wanted Rayman for Saturn, but can't find it reasonably priced anywhere...

So I just bought:

SKU Qty Unit Price Total Platform Name
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
120042 1 $2.99 $2.99 PS Rayman - Pre-Played
151380 1 $5.99 $5.99 PS Rayman 2 The Great Escape - Pre-Played
183316 1 $14.99 $14.99 PS2 Rayman 2 Revolution - Pre-Played
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subtotal: $23.97

Total Discount: -$6.00
Shipping: $0.00
Tax: $1.49
-------------
Total: $19.46

I have Rayman 2 for DC already, but thought I should try the other two versions, especially since playing through it again from the begining with all the lums in place would be fun.
