I don't know if it would be okay to have a thread that is just like a chatroom though :/ Maybe they would prefer us just having a chatroom.

But since this thread serves as a touch-base for a lot of our posting/returning to Neogaf, as Timedog said, it results in more ad revenue, right? It's such a positive thread and ultimately a harmless one, that I'd hope they'd allow it. Wasn't there a 'random talk' thread just a bit ago anyway? This one seems much more personable.

I disagree, if this were in the Community tab it would die out within the week. No one actively checks that place out, and if so, it's mainly for gaming OT's and not off-topic related stuff.

If the only way to get this thread to stay alive is to throw it over there, though, i'll bite.

No, not at all, i am to old to have an internet persona, i'm past that nonsense, i post things online i would say IRL to other people's face. And i'm pretty used to people knowing who i am on forums, i've been active on a lot of Techno forums, and we would al meet up on various party's troughout the country.

Not really, actually. Though if it was a pic of my actual face (like yours, for example) I think I would be slightly inclined to change the tone of some of my posts. Otherwise; nope.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with people chatting and having fun. Not every thread has to be an ultra serious discussion where the stakes are the future of the free world.

I feel like there is a huge difference between a thread like this, and say a thread about a news article or a thread on abortion or a thread about a game announcement. It's a fun thread based off a novel idea that the forum responded to in an overwhelmingly positive way.

I don't see any users complaining about the thread (what would they complain about?), it's gotten some members to stop lurking, and it generates more ad revenue for GAF, so I really don't see the problem.

I suppose, but let's look at what this thread is actually for, and what it has accomplished and achieved in the past half-month.

It has lured people in who were casually browsing the OT, and decided "hey, this seems interesting-*click*". Some may just lurk, some may post, and in most cases, join (like in coldvein's case).

I don't think we would or even could have reached more than 600 individual RP-ers if this thread were tucked away in the community board, was my point.

In the end, one thing I love about this thread is seeing new joining faces. Apart from being able to right-click-save a new RP avatar, I also get to know the face behind a poster I may have otherwise not known.

Also, I think the problem is simply this:

If it's getting to know each other, the thread is fine. But when new people are ignored, the post rate of a few is dramatically increased and it basically becomes their thread, which means that there's a thread sticking around on the front page for only a few people.

As long as the community becomes larger, I think it's fine.

P.S. To answer my own question, I act on the forums the same way I do IRL, but with a spate of gaming-related rage recently, it got awkward to see my happy face next to "RAWR Y I LOSE" posts. :<

The RP thread flourishes because it's in OT where lots of people can see it and get curious, then decide to join in. To keep introducing people to the idea of using their real pictures we have to be somewhere visible. Community seems infrequently trafficked and putting the RP thread there (subscription or no) is only going to turn it insular and into what people have been accusing it of in the first place: a club/clique of preexisting members.
