Real Pic January!

It's been mild here too this winter. I foresee that changing, but we've only had one or two days of -25 wind chill weather so far. Usually it's most of January.

Yeah. We moan about the winter here in the UK, but at least we don't have weather that could kill you. It can feel cold some days, but you won't get frostbite.

The real reason he is probably doing it is so he can get his own way. I used to do that as a kid. I thought if I freak out for long enough, my mother would give in just to get some peace

That is most likely, he's taking it pretty far tonight. He knows when he is beaten however...

Yeah. The thing is, a full on tantrum can get pretty tiring after a bit. He'll probably just burn himself out and give in. :D

Usually a tantrum like this leads to a quick bedtime. But he is really digging The Wizard of Oz so I thinking we'll stay up for a bit to read it.

Yeah. that may be a good bargaining tool. If you stop this tantrum you can stay up and read the Wizard of Oz with me.

Just spent $80 applying to a grad program at UCLA. My undergrad GPA was below the program's average, but my GRE score was above average. Hopefully the essay is good enough to get me in.

It's funny that Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz with the idea that he'd write a children's story that didn't give children nightmares.

And yet so much of it is completely horrific.

When my little cousins had tantrums, I would stoke the fire for my own amusement.

One time the second youngest really, really wanted ice cream and his mom said no. He was in "pick up things around the room and throw them" mode. Eventually he threw a ball and I dove like a outfielder to catch it and throw it back. And he kept doing this.

Eventually he stopped crying and was having fun just playing so I got some ice cream and sat down and ate it in front of him and it started again.

His mom was not pleased.

A lot of the story is allegorical. He was a theosophist. It's basically based on the Occult ideas of Madame Blavatsky.

The origins of the Tin Woodman and Scarecrow are pretty unnearving, then there's the goggles that you have to lock on to your head to go into the Emerald City... its all very creepy.

They're all manifestations of dorothy. Perhaps parts of her own psyche. I did read into the esoteric meaning behind the story at one point.

Not that I'm really that into theosophy, it's just that I am quite curious about these things.

I actually can't stand the book(s) or the movie.

But I love Wicked (both book and musical.) So much more interesting.

I couldn't finish Wicked... fuck that book, cause I know how it ends. As long as I don't finish reading it, then it won't end and the poor lady is okay.

Ya, re-reading it as an adult is extremely interesting because of the obvious allegorical themes in the book. As a kid though, I was all 'WEEE! FIELDMICE THAT PULL A LION ON A CHARIOT!'

Yeah, it's interesting the choice they made with the musical to not end it that way. And I usually hate sappy, perfect endings... but I think in this case I rather prefer it.

Yeah. You view the world from a completely different perspective as a kid. In some ways I miss being a kid. There is no responsibility you see. Your life was centred around having fun. Everything was a new experience to you.

I almost caught the Musical while it was in Pittsburgh, but the tickets were ridiculously expensive (Thanks Ticketmaster!) so to get an even half-decent seat even months in advance it was about 500 dollars. Ya, I don't need to see it THAT bad.

It's fun though, I can acutely remember reading The Wizard of Oz as a child and completely missing the most obvious things. You can have new experiences as Adults, but you also have the context to explain those experiences.

Also, as an adult, you can eat 2 pounds of twizzlers and nobody can tell you no.

This is true. I have to say though, the best days of your life are when you're growing up. The summer holidays come around and there is no school for a month.

I think it is partly to do with the complete lack of responsibility and perhaps because the adolescent mind is a little different.

I overall liked Dr. Horrible. Give NPH and Nathan Fillion more vehicles to just chew the fuck out of some scenery.

Felicia Day was the weak spot of that, though. Shoulda been Jewel Staite.
