Really cool new EVE Online trailer

over the past 2 years or so I've had eve on and off for 6 months. I recently had it for the month of september. I still cannot figure out wtf is the point in playing it. But now and then I get an urge to figure out wtf I should be doing and after my month runs out I am yet again left confused and annoyed so I cancel it again.

I played Eve for a week or so but I lost interest.

It's the type of game I REALLY, REALLY want to like but just don't hold me on.
Stunningly good atmosphere(the 'emptiness of space', gigantic bases, unknown objects..etc) and very nice design. The interface screams pure hardcore.

Damn, I want to play it again.

Same here. I'm really close to reactivating.

Just the fact that EVERYONE is in the same universe without separate servers is cool.

It's what the Wish guys were hoping to do with their game, but EVE has completely blown away even the most conservative estimates of what Wish was going to be able to do.

I played it for about a week and a half. Mining asteroids is not my idea of fun and that was the only thing there was to do that could allow you to advance. They probably have changed that, but I don't care enough to check.

4:40 into it... The Raven, I have one of those battleships, they were incredibly deadly before they nerfed the torpedo and missiles to high heaven. Now they're just powerful.

Expensive too - ingame currency I mean.

EDIT: Uh.. Mining isn't the only thing you can do, join a player created corporation, PvP, manufacturing... it has a steep learning curve, but the rewards are well worth it, especially when you fly your first battleship out of the station.

I'm contemplating trying it out...dunno, dunno. I could see myself really getting into it.

You need to know going in that it's more harsh than old school UO PVP. You can lose six months of work in an instant :)

But the game is such an awesomely designed universe. There aren't guilds. There are corporations (which also have smaller forms and there are even pirate gangs fighting the corporations) which control the game's economy. Basically the entire universe from the economy to law is completely controlled by the player. It gets extremely cool when two corporations are fighting over a spot in the galaxy for a shipping lane or something.

Instead of servers, there's one galaxy where everyone plays in and the game still holds the record out of all MMORPGs with 15,000 concurrent players in the universe at once.

There's a free trial at http://www.eve-online.com/

There's an awesome 121mb version of the trailer available as well:

Gah, the thought of losing all my shit (or being griefed as a newbie) is pushing me away, but I'm still crazy interested, I guess I'll give the trial a shot.

To all of you who are interested in trying it out.. don't give up too easily. EVE has a very steep learning curve, but that's also what keeps the game fresh after two years of playing. There are always new skills to learn, new ships to fly, new modules to produce, new ores to mine, new regions to explore/conquer.

If you are even remotely interested in this kind of game, but get overwhelmed at first.. hang in there. Find a good corporation that will help you to get on your feet. It's worth it.

Well, I'm a fan of games like Elite, Escape Velocity, etc. Steep learning curve doesn't really bother me, harsh PVP kinda does, but, I'll give it a shot. Nothing to lose.

Buy a clone and when you die [ingame of course] you'll awake in a cloning station with all of your skill points intact. Well, as long as you buy the right clone... but you don't want to worry about that for the time being. You can also buy insurance for your ship, which is expensive and nearly always doesn't cover the entire cost of the ship... but it's something.

The eve galaxy is split up into solar systems with different security ranks. Anything below 0.5 is pretty much a no-go area for a newbie - it seems to get progressively more dangerous as the sec rating gets lower. 0.5 to 1.0 is patrolled by NPC police called Concord, they have uber powerful ships... By that I mean they could destroy you in a second.

Just so you know: after just over a year playing the game, I still get VERY nervous about heading into 0.0 space. There are some truly malevolent players in those systems with ships that can't be bought on the market....

EDIT: I used to regularly venture into 0.2 space before they nerfed torpedo's and missiles, to hunt rats (NPC pirates), and even though I didn't engage in PvP i was blown up twice. I'm now on my 3rd battleship (A Raven - that ship 4 minutes and 40 seconds into the trailer).

its a really great game, but i just didnt have time to get into it, I REALLY REALLY want a sci fi themed mmorpg to take off , this one would be the absolute best if you could land on planets and get out of your ship.

I'm very interested in this game... But unfortunately I don't have a lot of time for it, is it something I can enjoy playing casually like you can play WoW? I don't mind it being very hardcore but is it actually fun getting the hang of everything or does the fun only start once you reach a certain level or something?

Well, your skills increase with time and go up offline. So you can set your skill in a certain ship type to increase and log out and wait for it to happen.

EVE fuckin rox!
Seriously... the PVP system is just wonderful. Too bad I don't have too much spare time for MMOs, so I stopped to play it ...

Been playing this game since the closed betas back in 2002 :lol and am still going strong. Quite simply thee best MMO around IMO (and I've played most), the PVP play is just so satisfying and the community is one of the best.
Not to mention all the expansions (2 so far, 3rd coming soon™) are free.

I'm currently making my living as a rich space pirate. :D

Yarr!

Wow, this game looks awesome! From what I saw in the trailer, it's huge.. Looks a lot better than Earth & Beyond which was canceled a long time ago...

I'm gonna give this a try next week, I want a game I need to work hard for! Also, can anyone rip the music from that trailer? Or is it downloadable from their site? I want it!

It's a lot more interesting now that I've gotten past the tutorial stuff. I like that I can do other stuff while waiting for things to finish mining, or travelling several systems, etc.
