Rebel FM — Episode 5 — 02/04/09: Dawn of War II Beta, RE5, and Afro Samurai + MORE!

I finally got a chance to listen to some of this podcast. I've been enjoying them for the most part. Always good to hear the former 1up guys. Chuff, Nick, Philip, Ryan, etc. And just skimming over this thread now, I see I'm not the only with similar thoughts on Arthur. I don't know, but it just seems like since maybe the second episode, he just seems really arrogant and kinda abrasive. That remark he made on the last show, something about messing somebody's face up or something...awkward. Then at the start of this show, with him telling Ryan "you SOB". I'm not sure how that played in the room as he said it. Maybe it came across worse to me on air than it did during recording. But still, the attitude he said it with. He just comes across as very unlikeable to me. I mean, if he seems uncomfortable with doing the show at his place, could they just maybe rent out a room somewhere else for two hours to record? Or record at someone else's place? I know it's probably tough with all the equipment and storing it. I like listening to the guys, but I was literally cringing listening to the segment on shooters. I just got an uneasy vibe. I haven't listened to the whole show yet, so I don't know how the rest of the show goes. But Arthur should ease up and take "the stick out of his ass" and lighten up a bit. It's just games, my man....

You know the one response that really comes to mind to this weeks show?
Arthur's comment about Europe.
Frankly I was kind of insulted when I heard this. In fact it really pissed me off. Coloured my enjoyment of the entire show.
Fact that I'm posting this a week later and not talking about the actually interesting shooter discussion demonstrates this.

We speak American here.

I guess I didnt notice it the first time i listened because I figured they were all really good friends that they sometimes joke around more than others. After relistening to it Arthur and Anthony just really come off as asses. Like the whole segment when nick and ryan were TRYING to talk about pixel junk eden they just kept interupting with rude remarks. After that it was just alot of rude interuptions.

I give props to nick because kept it cool the entire time and just tried to push forward while they talked over him.

I really like the show, but hopefuly next time they tone it down.

I fuckin hated that shit.
This podcast is turning to shit because of that tard Arthur.

i thought arthur was fine.

i also don't think that people who do podcasts should listen to their fans when it comes to the way they act on their podcast.

you can't force people to be interesting, to get along or to have chemistry. it either works or it doesn't and i think it's lame when people on forums put in requests for podcast members to act a certain way.

I think when it's pretty much a single person coming off as an obnoxious douche then it's worth mentioning. I was happy and donated when the show started but I've stopped listening to the last couple of episodes mostly because it's just not enjoyable or interesting to listen to Arthur. I'm sure he's a decent guy and everything but I can't stand listening to him anymore. He can act how he wants and things can continue the same, but for me it ruins the show and I can find other podcasts.

mentioning has value, for me that's the point of a forum.

still i don't think said opinions should be taken into account in respect to people's actions. in terms of the physical characteristics of a product, sure (layout, cost, appearance, style, etc) but imo people are better off doing what you did (stop listening) than they are trying to get someone to change (or even worse kicked off a podcast).

just how i feel bout it of course :D

That one annoyed me as well, more than the shooter discussion which only had the flaw of being a discussion for discussion's sake mostly. But let's be honest - most of the American gaming media is ignorant about Europe, they just don't say it so harshly. Maybe they're interested in the state of things in Japan, but other than that they're fully engrossed in the US state of gaming, and why shouldn't they? Basically all of the important western gaming media is there, they're making the headlines, have the biggest websites and blogs and are thus the the voices that really are heard around the gaming world. What is annoying about this is, is when that leads to shitty reporting, taking the US situation (i.e. NPD's) and making their state of affairs the world's state of gaming. In this case Arthur came across as a moron if he discounts things that are going on in Europe, especially as far as the PC market is concerned, which is different from country to country here as far as I can tell (not a PC gamer anymore though).

The main problem with RebelFM as Arthur has gotten more prominent is that the others can't rein Arthur in and he doesn't know when to take himself back. Imagine 1UpYours if there was no John or Shane to control Garnett when he's going on one of his "devil's advocate" rants. They'd shut him down with one witty remark or point out a glaring weakness in his argument; it is hilarious and Garnett then knows to step back - and he can take a joke. That makes that (or any) show work.

Overall I personally still don't think this episode was as bad as some online feedback makes it sound. It's always a pleasure to listen to the Area5 guys including Jay, so I hope they'll be back.

I haven't listened, but this Arthur dude sounds like he's trying to make his mark in the podcast, maybe becoming a 'personality' within it, trying to keep up with the established guys... I'll try to listen this week.

I don't have a problem with Arthur, but I didn't like the shooter discussion much. It wasn't because of Nick and Arthur's stance that HL2 isn't a good shooter but is a really good game, since I really agree with that, but I was bummed that they couldn't really explain it very well.

To me it comes down to the HL2 guns not feeling very good to me. I like the shotgun and use it pretty much exclusively in the HL2 series unless I'm out or low on ammo, because that's the one that feels good to me. The magnum too, I guess, but for some reason I've never used it regularly.

I'd never say that HL2 isn't a good shooter though. It's just not the best game out there at shooting. It's like saying that a FPS is a lightgun game or some kind of game that only involves pulling a trigger. There's still the rest of the game where you move around and shit. The level design is where HL2 excels over most other shooters.

This half-life shooting discussion is probably the most painful thing I've listened to in months. It's no one person's fault, but guys... Please never do that again.

Don't blame Arty, they just need some ADD meds to stay on topic, the first couple of eps were pretty good.

And yes, that Half Life 2 shit was almost as bad as Teena on a podcast...But not as bad since my ears did not bleed.

i have a feeling the gravity gun is underused in the console version of HL2 due to the lack of mouse.
I liked using the gravity gun. :D And I've triple dipped on the game: for X-box, X-box 360 and now I have it on PS3. Adjusting the sensitivity, the gravity gun is a thing of beauty. :D

Rules for Arthur:

1. You can speak without cussing or proclaiming your love of dick.
2. Don't interrupt people while they are talking. That's rude FYI.
3. If you want to make a case for you arguments, actually give reasons why or learn to disagree.

This is by far the worst episode of the podcast. The shooter discussion was stupid, but would have been interesting if there was actual debate with reasoning behind people's answers.

Ryan I solute you, and the others for having to deal with this seemingly rude person.

And if it is all in good fun, good for you guys, but that was not fun to listen to.

I really agree here. I was contemplating posting this myself. The cursing thing is just annoying to listen to. Cursing is alright, just not in every sentence.

The "oh my god you're talking about _______ I'm so bored" is equally annoying to me. I don't think many listeners mind listening to it.

I got the feeling Nick and Ryan were truly pissed when he kept interrupting their Pixlejunk discussion. Like that awkward fake but not really fake at all 'shut the fuck up' tone came out of Nick's mouth. Could be wrong, though.

Thought I was the only one who had a problem with Arthur...He just rubs me the wrong way.

Wasn't a big fan of this weeks show, if it continues like this I'll probably stop listening. Too many times where the discussion was legitimately annoying, not because of the content but just the way it was carried out.

sounds like arthur is on this weeks too.

bl gaf
i'm not listening to this though. not even for john and patrick who i deeply love

just got back from post podcast dinner with @chufmoney and @nsuttner. thanks muchly to @jwhdavison and @exxy for being on this week!
