Everyone having a go at them for asking for donations in their first few episodes really need to step back and fine tune their basic comprehension skills.

Disgusting.
My problem isn't asking for money, it's the pretense in which the request was made. The way it sounded, every penny of the money was going back into the show which is unbelievable even if they shopped at the most expensive store on the planet. If they came out and said, "Hey, we have rent" and managed to raise that money, you'd have no complaints from me. Others I'm sure would bitch but as long as you're up front, hey, go nuts.

pretty much right on. the request was pretty shameless to begin with, though.

spending tens of thousands on podcasting gear is sort of an absurd proposition. you can make one that sounds great for really nothing at all compared to the sum they got. makes me question their original motives for asking for money, to be honest. maybe the show itself was a front to get them out of some gambling debt or something.

Most podcasts manage to sound reasonably good without begging for money. Amazing.

You really are pathetic. And you need to learn the definition of 'parody'.

jesus fucking christ. What 'request'? You guys need to sort out your chickens and your eggs.

We already discussed the donations. That thread got locked because there wasn't anything else you could say at that point. So get over how it went down. People donated money, the end. Live with it.

the reason donations are still on topic is because they're still posting episodes without mics or equipment. it should take no time at all to get some mics and stuff if you're taking your show seriously.

Not really. People are within their rights to ask questions, especially when it's hard to see where the money has gone.

Yeah, I would rather listen to a somewhat bland IGN podcast than a show with a bunch of people trying to lazily play the role of gaming philosopher. If there is one thing I can't stand, it is when podcasts try to hide their lack of preparation with a general "bullshit" session that has no real insight.
Perfect summation. The meandering conversation was conspicuous evidence of there being no outline or theme developed for this episode prior to recording. A few bullet points do not suffice as preparation. Importantly, there should be a participant whose role is to keep the conversation moving (i.e. the host); witness the Bombcast.

Also, there's one individual who pretends to be an iconoclast but, instead, merely plays the role of an insolent. Given the arrogance, though, I can only see the criticism presented here and at their website as reinforcing his attitude rather than it providing grist for personal reflection. That would be unfortunate.

Honestly, that was an awkward listen. Cringeworthy, even, with the vulgarity. A fuck here or there can emphasize a point; too often or misplaced, it comes across as needlessly flamboyant. Swallow the bitter medicine, guys, or watch the dream evaporate. Sorry.

not that there's any reason for me to be in this thread at this point, but for those questioning, we ordered two more mics for next week. we weren't sure if we would regularly have six people on, and figured the sharing would work out when we did. it didn't, so we're upgrading -- to add to the crapload of other equipment we picked up. though we're still recording in a living room in Oakland; we'll figuring out some soundproofing to compliment the nice equipment, but as with everything else, it takes time.

I liked the structure of 1up FM a lot more than this letsdecideonthespotwhatwe'regoingtotalk about attitude.

But how do you do 1UP FM's segments when you no longer have the resources? Shelf life is out because you don't get to play the games pre-release as are the developer interviews. Only thing that really translates is backlog (which I never listened to) and the mail bag.

Your points are valid and i cannot respond to them.

The shooter segment was just plain awful and stupidly dominated by arthur. Anything else would have been much better.

new mics is fantastic news.

<3 me some rebel fm.

I loved the HL2 as a shooter debate. If only because Ryan expressed exactly how I feel about games in general. Half Life being a combination of amazingly well done components. While something like Call of Duty is pretty much just gun play. I enjoyed COD4 more than any previous Call of Duty because they attempted to make a cohesive story, but still wasn't quite the experience I love like Half Life, Riddick, Darkness, Bioshock etc. But it was nice to see someone actually talk about what makes Half-Life the game that it is.

Hey, thanks for listening, "voltron". I'm glad you enjoyed the show. It's people like you who keep us doing what we do. But really, this thread is for honoring the Rebels, so please, let's get back on topic. :)

I'm glad you guys are getting more mics, but - at this point - I'd probably be more satisfied if you only bought one more mic and just stopped letting Arthur on the show.

The problem with Aegis is/has always been... he's some random douche who got a bit of the 1up fallout starshine. He has no established personality to fall back on and no one cares about him/his opinion

That HL2/shooter argument seemed very pointless. Even if he thinks it isn't within the shooting genre, who the heck cares? And this quote made me confused: "And the shooting not being as good as other games is the reason why I have it a 9.5 and not a 10." So instead of giving it a very very very very very very very good score you "only" gave it a very very very very very very good score? M'kay.

I personally agree that the basic shooting mechanics in most Valve games are rather mediocre, I hate how just about all the guns are so inaccurate, even at the first shot. And L4D just feels like you're shooting paper, enemies fall down so quickly but you still don't feel any actual impact to the shooting. They should have been arguing that instead of what genre HL2 is in :P

The short RE5 talk was nice. I love the RE5 demo, and if the full game is even better and it has some of the typical exploration/puzzle solving from RE4, then that's great.
This is where I have to disagree. L4D was nominated for several awards in animation, and for good reason. It will be hard to go back to Resident Evil and House of the Dead after L4D. The zombies in L4D just have so much more weight and physicality due to the animation and physics.

And in my opinion, the shooting in HL2 was by far the weakest part of the game. It might have improved in the episodes but I would have enjoyed HL2 better if it was a full on adventure game, with the shooting limited to the major action set pieces. Otherwise, the shooting in HL2 only served to slow down the pace of the game. People had the same problem with Mirror's Edge, and I think it is a valid one.

Certainly not alone. The guy is really, really annoying - thinks he's a know it all and and really tries to come off as an enlightened gamer, but it sounds hollow.

Unsubscribed, for the reasons you've outlined.

From the top to the bottom in only a handful of shows. Way to go, guys.

I thought the shooter discussion could have been helped out if they had made it more clear whether they were talking about console or PC games, and maybe talked about the different platforms on their own entirely instead of mashing them both together. While listening, I was often confused about which version/edition of a specific game they would be referring to, which is not acceptable considering what different experiences you would have playing on PC or console. I personally prefer to play FPS on PC, so I would have happily skipped over any console shooter discussion.

There were also too many generalizations, like "Half Life is/does [X];" considering that 'Half Life' encompasses two full games and two large episodes across a period of 10 years and features wildly differing gameplay elements and situations, the guys should have been a lot more specific and given examples. Really, everyone involved should have had a lot more supporting examples at the ready, no matter which game they were talking about. And any sort of "[X] isn't a shooter" BS should have been stomped on immediately. What a nonsense statement.

Finally, far too much of the discussion amounted to the guys straining to put some sort of intellectual face on their own subjective experiences. Most of what I heard could have just as easily be expressed by a bunch of people sitting around yelling "I like Half Life!" "Well, I like Bioshock!" for a half hour. I'm not sure what the point is of setting up a discussion topic like this when most of the statements amount to "I thought this game put you in more interesting situations" or "I felt more in control of this game," because what is there to rebut? "No you didn't"?

you guys are blowing the "arthur factor" way out of proportion.

Nope. His demeanor, lack of tact and immature insistence on being "right" ruined the show. The arguing got too heated, and I'm not interested in tuning in for over an hour of unsubstantiated, sweeping generalization-making "discussion". There's always one person who's in over his head in a discussion, and you can usually tell who that person is based on how loud he is relative to other speakers. In this case, it's Arthur. I tune in to podcasts to be entertained and enlightened, not to listen to some jackass use his internet pulpit to defend his own existence.

(That, and Anthony's piss-poor attitude, which I'll excuse because I generally appreciate his contributions.)

My podcast listening time is limited. This one just dropped off the bottom of my list.

I was kind of cringing during this episode thinking that Arthur's grating on Ryan would make Ryan not want to come back. I first felt this way last week when Arthur said, jokingly, "Don't make me play xxx again!" (and I can't remember what he was even talking about, to be honest), and Ryan said, "I'm not making you play anything." It was a joke comment but it was the first time I sensed something was up.

I liked him in the first few episodes but scaling back would be good long-term.

Must. Stop. Reading. E-S-G comments.x Man Arthur is copping a hiding over there. I actually feel bad for the guy.

When you think about the environment and vibe that they record Rebel FM in, its not hard to understand why someone would be as 'abrasive' as Arthur has. I mean, they record the podcast in his lounge room (I think) and its likely got the vibe of a bunch of buddies sitting around talking shit about games.

I could imagine myself getting easily excitable in a situation like that too. Especially with no brand or image to maintain.

I agree with you voltron. I'd rather he stay on and just control himself a little than disappear into a corner somewhere, but:

Heres an idea.

Keep Anthony ON a microphone the whole time, and let the pseudo-intellectual, hair-splitin’, semantic-spitin’, argumentative, insulting, indefensible opinion havin’, rudely interuptin’, needlessly vulgar Arthur take a seat in the corner and watch the professionals work. Seriously, this guy produces more wahjah than a 45 year old Naruto cosplayer performing a live action fan-fic skit at a retirement home.
:lol

I usually don't complain about podcasts, but hearing all of the sighing during the Eden discussion really turned me off. I wanted to hear what Nick and Ryan had to say.

Edit: I really liked having Kat on the podcast.

At first I thought I was just reading it wrong, but, yeah, I don't see any other way you could take it now.

Whoa. That doesn't sound good.

Anthony, if you're reading this, cheer up. The bad times happen so you can appreciate the good. Things will turn around soon, and you will have been better person for going through these trials.
