Forget "Baby Got Back":

Swass, Sir Mix-A-Lot's first outing is glorious to behold, with clever rhymes, a guide to cruising around Seattle in the immortal "Posse on Broadway", and (of course) the definition of "Swass". Also, dig the cheeseball Casio rendition of "Alouette" during "Rippin". Essential, as well as Mix-A-Lot's second album, Seminar.

Looking For The Perfect Beat: 1980-1985 - While you desperately need Afrika Bambaataa, this is probably all the Bambaataa you really need. The immortal "Planet Rock" is here, along with the title track, variations of "Zulu Nation Throwdown", "Jazz Sensation", and more. Crucial listening.

I never really thought I'd use the phrase "delightfully misogonystic" but, er, yeah. I can't help it; "Treat Her Like A Prostitute" is just so damn catchy. The storytelling is top notch, even if some of his adventures are a bit questionable. Ah, fuck it, this is still great stuff, especially "The Ruler's Back".

That & "Planet Rock" were two songs that made me fall in love with hip-hop.

Same here. I can't believe how fresh it sounds even today...

Anyway, Eye Know by De La Soul is essential too. And check out Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic by the one and only Public Enemy :)

Oh my god yes, Critical Beatdown is most definitely one of the top ten hip-hop albums EVER, regardless of the year.

If you want to read a long, insteresting, and ultimately heartbreaking story about Paul C - the man who did much of the production on Critical Beatdown, Stezo's "Crazy Noise", Eric B. & Rakim's "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em" and many others, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

Well...how old are we talking here? There's a big difference between early 80s and late 80s.

And shame on everyone for not mentioning Boogie Down Productions.

Anyway, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, LL, Kool Moe Dee, hell, even Fat Boys are pretty good. For the later 80s, I guess someone should mention EPMD.

Kurtis Blow - Kurtis Blow

I can't believe that hasn't been mentioned. It's the quintessential iteration of all those old school rap sounds.
