Not quite as serious as your suggestion, but off the top of my head I'll say check out Howard Marks' "Mr. Nice". A fantastic read if you enjoy the sticky, as Howard was one of the biggest hash smugglers ever.

My favorite part is probably when they go clubbing in the Philippines.

I was going to recommend "Memoirs of a Geisha", then I remembered it's not a real autobiography, and is still considered fiction.

Still an enjoyable read.

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond
Serendipities: Language and Lunacy by Umberto Eco
Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter
Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge: by Edward Wilson
The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious (Collected works of Carl Gustav Jung vol 9, Pt 1, and really the only Jung the average person should bother with)

That's what's been cycling over my desk over the past month. Oh, and An Anthropologist on Mars, which has an awesome first half. The stories in the second half can't quite match the brilliance of the first, though.

Thanks for these recommendations, I really need to start reading books again. Haven't done it in ages.
