The Great Escape is probably my favorite.

The Desert Fox is entertaining.

The Best Years of Our Lives is a good coming home from war and adjusting back to normal life movie.

Saving Private Ryan still has the best combat sequences.

Terminator, the war against the machines still rages.

Hyena Road.

Edit: Something you don't see very often: a Canadian take on a post-2001 Afghanistan war movie.

Can't really add to what has already been listed. But Where Eagle's Dare has always stood out for me.

Doesn't have the gritty realism of today's films. Nor the historical accuracy. But, Where Eagle's Dare has always been a favourite of mine since childhood.

The intro music is right up there with the greats:

Plus Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton shooting and blowing up shit - what more does one need?

Kajaki: Kilo Two Bravo was also a pleasant surprise.

There are so many obvious choices already said, but here is an off the radar Nuclear war movie.

By Dawn's Early Light. (starring Rebecca DeMornay)

Johnny Got His Gun

A lot of people know the movie from the clips used in a Metallica video. The movie was directed by the author of the book (also recommended).

The most intense and personal war movie I ever saw. I can’t explain it any other way. Watch it alone with no interruptions. It’s a different kind of war/horror movie.

I read the book and it took me years to track down the DVD. I think I had to import it from France. It looks like Amazon has it now.

I'm sure we had this thread not long ago. Anyway, everyone already listed the obvious ones so I'll go to bat for Jarhead, great early Sam Mendes movie with Gyllenhaal and Foxx, has a great punchline.

Also Full Metal Jacket is getting a 4K re-release which is fucking great news.
