• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Recommend me some PSP games.

So this PSP shows up. I need some games. I've got 1.5 firmware and have been enjoying the homebrew. As such I do not want to upgrade.

Now, I need some games. For that, I'd like the recommendations of GAF.

Note: I don't like GTA.

Interested in these games:

Lumines
Irregular Hunter X (yes I know it requires firmware upgrade, but still)

Thinking about:

Legend of Heroes
Metal Gear Ac!d
Darkstalkers
Star Soldier PSP

PS: If anyone dares bring in the DS vs PSP crap into this thread, they will be banned for a minimum of six months. Even if you're "joking".

Lumines and Metal Gear Ac!d are both good games. Darkstalkers is pretty good, especially now that the price has dropped on it.

Buy a Gizmondo.

Ok, ok. Urr, well I thought Metal Gear Ac!d was pretty neat. It's rough around the edges sure, but it has a solid core. Also super crazy over-the-top story.

But yeah, Lumines wins out of this list.

Why don't you want to upgrade?

It's not on your list, but Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee is a must buy.

EDIT: For overseas stuff, have you heard of Exit?

I'd avoid LoH. Just from my personal experience. At first you feel like, "oh, a traditional jrpg to carry around with me!" but a few more hours in and you're more like, "oh, this is boring shit twaddle that I wouldn't play on console either."

I didn't really think MGA was that compelling either, but it is different.

I actually like the PSP a ton, but it's not a great system if your interest is primarily Japanese titles (yet) in the west. Racing games might not be your style but you should really try Wipeout which is far, far better than Mario Kart.

Don't like Hot Shots Golf (actually I don't like sports games in general. Sim or otherwise). Otherwise I'd be on it, I understand it's a quality entry into the series.

I don't like Wipeout either.

I'm being difficult, I know. :P

By the by, recommendations do not have to be limited by region. So if there's hot shit from EU, NA or JPN be sure to mention it.

Well, I loved Wipeout. Did you play that? The game can be found in some deals now I'm sure, plus you get the ton of downloadable content which pretty much extends the games life by double. If you had any affinity for previous titles in the series, it's basically a return to form. It's so good, imo best PSP game that isn't GTA:LCS. But you don't like GTA :P

Uhm, I heard Exit was pretty good AND is import friendly, but... you need a firmware update probably.

LUMINES
RIDGE RACER
WIPEOUT PURE

Only racer I <3 is Fzero X.

WELL BITCH, KATAMARI DAMACY JUST CAN'T BE DONE ON ONE STICK

Oooh. Forgot that just got released.

What about Loco Roco?

IT'LL BE A WHILE

But I don't like racing games!

IT'S THAT OR SOCOM 1.5

Don't like FPS. Wait, someone told me it was 3rd person. Still not my "type" of game.

Darkstalker is crap. here is why:
1. PSP's D-pad is not good for 45 degree angles.
2. This game DOES NOT support the analog stick.

I've been playing Exit for the past hour and it pretty much rocks. It requires 2.5.

I've been playing Katamari since the 22nd, and it also rocks. There's a 20 minute or so learning curve on the controls, then it controls nearly as well as the PS2 version. Katamari requires 2.0.

Quality PSP 1.5 Compatiable Games (to my knowledge):

X-Men Legends 2 *Online*
Hot Shots Golf
PuyoPop Fever (Import)
Guilty Gear XX #Reloaded (Import)
Lumines
Star Soldier (Import)
Pursuit Force (Import + Hard As Hell)
Metal Gear Acid
Puzzle Bobble (Import)
Princess Crown (Import + Japanese Heavy)
Ape Escape (If you haven't played the original)
Ridge Racers
Dynasty Warriors
Kollon (Import)
Tenchu: Shinobi Taizen (Import + Only purchase if you are a old-school fan)
WipeOut Pure
NBA Street Portable
Taiko no Tatsujin (Import + Heavy Japanese, but pretty intuitive gameplay)
Virtua Tennis
Darkstalkers
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex ($20.00 Deal Only)
Twisted Metal: Head On *Online*
BurnOut Legends
Gripshift
Gundam Battle Tactics (Import)

Although, I would advise you to update for the upcoming 2006 & Beyond PSP Hotness ya know.. :D !!

What about Princess Crown?

Has it been announced for a US release? IIRC, the Saturn version wasn't exactly import friendly, although it was worth the effort.

Also, the import shops in the area seem to have difficulty getting copies of it. Is it easier to get online?

Shit shit shit. I totally blanked out on Princess Crown when making this post. JPN language skills aren't a big deal unless it's Fire Emblem level of kanji.

I think I have my first PSP game. :P

I'll vouch for Star Soldiers PSP. A solid shooter, if not necessarily the most inspired or insanely challenging.

If you haven't seen me pimp Gripshift in every other PSP thread, allow me to add that to your list for consideration.

Plus, I would assume many of these 1.5 Compatiable titles would be pretty cheap by now. So check around for deals, maybe even give Ebay a try.

What's Gripshift about? If it's a racer, I already said I'm not huge on them. :S

Good to hear that Star Soldier PSP is worth the effort. Princess Crown however, is ZOMG and I definately have to get that, like right now.

What's the homebrew hubbub all about? I can't seem to see the point of people keeping their system version downgraded. I understand about the emulators you can put on there but homebrew? I guess I haven't seen any games of that sort yet...

What's the point of the firmware upgrades? Is it an anti-piracy measure?

it's added a lot of features to internet browsing, format support and cosmetic changes as well. not that it takes the place of emulation, but they've done pretty well adding some decent content to the upgrades.

Ha, I guess I really need to try using the PSP for something other than games. I've never even played a movie on it.

Yeah, I saw that. Its much more of a platformer based around low-gravity vehicular physics than a racer (though it has some racing in it). If its the racing you don't like as opposed to simply movement controls/physics associated with vehicles in games, then it may still be worth a look.

I give Metal Gear Ac!d a "Hell yes". Great game. I has totally absorbed me. I also heartily recommend Puzzle Bobble. Star Soldier, not so much. Looks and feels like homebrew.

Launch game can't be great game? o.O

Didn't you get the memo? You know, Mario 64, Tetris, Super mario World, Sonic Adventure. All crap. :)

Seriously though, people need to stop gimping themselves by worrying about upgrading firmware.

Katamari, Exit, Xmen Legends 2, Maverick Hunter X (EB has it listed for US on Jan 10th at 29.99), Tokobot is pretty cool so far. Kingdom of Paradise is also a pretty surprising title so far.

Legend of Heroes is actually pretty good, despite being Lunar-esque old school. In fact, it's directly comparable to a Lunar title sans decent translation plus better graphics, UI, and more characters.

X-Men Legends 2
Hot Shots Golf
Lumines
Pursuit Force* (Import + Hard As Hell)
Metal Gear Acid
Ridge Racers
WipeOut Pure
Taiko no Tatsujin (Import + Heavy Japanese, but pretty intuitive gameplay)
Virtua Tennis
Twisted Metal: Head On*
BurnOut Legends
Gripshift*

I took Matix's extended definition of "Quality" and brought it back down to what it really means.

*I have not heard anything about them at all or played them my-self so I left them.
