Red Orchestra 2 Beta is Now Available on Steam

Just a note for people who aren't familiar with RO1. Yes, there's a cover system here, and I quite like it (though it's not perfect). However, a feature carried over from the first game is that, when you are pointing your sights and leaning it on a surface (sandbags, door frame, anything really), there is a small icon on the lower right (white icon of an MG sitting on sandbags). This means that you are steadying your gun on that surface, and makes aiming much easier. This is automatic and doesn't require you to go in to 'cover mode'. You just go into ironsights, and if you happen to be leaning next to a door frame or whatever, you'll automatically stabilize your aim. It's quite brilliant.

Between the coupon, having $5 credit and an American account (thanks to wilflare) I got the deluxe edition for €20.
Beta downloading now, how many servers are there and is there any located in Europe?

I'd recommend using the old cover mechanics over the locking cover a lot of the time. Q and E for leaning, and when you bring up ironsights while crouched your guy actually raises his stance a little bit. A lot of the cover is designed so that when you bring up ironsights while crouched you will be looking over the cover without having to lock to it.

edit: I'm going to have to mess around with the control scheme though. Get some functionality on my Mouse 4 and 5. I think I'll put melee on 4, cover on 3, ironsights on 2... and I guess grenades on 5. Then I'll get prone on left-ctrl.

It'll take me a while to get used to ironsights on 2 though, I've always played RO with them on 3 and it was really fucking me up on the new Danzig map.

Also, the new guys suck so hard at capping objectives on Danzig (I think it's called apartments now). I have to pick Squad Leader just so someone is throwing smokes. lol

Crossfire probably doesn't work for it yet. The game seems pretty scalable too. You just need to turn down some of the effects like Ambient Occlusion and you should be good to go.

edit: after reading a bit more, maybe it's not super scalable. I don't really have lesser hardware to test it out.

CrossfireX appears to be working just fine - although each GPU only gets utilized about 55-65% (I have MSI Afterburner going on a screen while in-game so I can monitor temps/etc.). If you max out EVERYTHING I think just about any setup will chug. As others (and I) have mentioned, turn off Ambient Occlusion and with my setup (i5 2500k @ 4.7, 8GB, 6970 CFX) I was around 60 FPS. I will definitely tune down shadows a bit (like someone else mentioned) to make sure it's rock-solid 60 FPS+.

I have been debating just blowing a huge load on dual MSI Lightning GTX 580 3GB XEs, lol. Maybe I'll do it...ha.

I like the game, it ran at 2560x1600 at around 45 fps and 1920x1200 kept a pretty solid 55-60 fps. I crashed to desktop a bunch of times, at the server browser and in game. Server browser runs really clunky for me, is it laggy for anyone else?

Gameplay is awesome, I had better luck with PPSH and MP40 at long range than I did with the bolt actions.

only could do a really quick 5 min check but 2600k @ 4.8 and GTX480@580 performance seemed to play really good @ 1080p with everything enabled and set to max ? really good as in 60 not 30 fps :p [40something people server]

I did notice gpu usage was only at 80% (vsync off) , and cpu usage was really weird (one of my hyperthreads was constantly 100%, other physical cores seemed really low) ... although now that I think about it I did select "hardware accelerated physics", maybe that causes it?

I'll play some more tonight for sure, gameplay seemed really nice from what I saw but the interface is really confusing for a n00b like me :p

I have to add that no game has made me feel like I'm playing Saving Private Ryan like this game. The moments where you poke your head out a window on the second story of some building, hastily aim your MP40 and start dumping on the three dudes below? Feels amazing.

Or being stuck behind a broken down truck in the middle of a snowy road, trying to get into a building while being shot from three different places at once. You can use the cover mechanic to get right up on the truck, and then you can fire through the truck's windows into the enemy location. You can just spray their location and for the most part, they'll keep their head down because they sure as fuck don't want to get tagged, but also you get the suppression mechanic kicking in, making them inaccurate and their view all fucky.

It's such a great mix of feeling like a bad ass motherfucker and some unlucky sack of shit with too much flesh and not enough gun.

Not many games do atmosphere in multiplayer. I don't know if I can say RO2 does it well, but it at the least tries. It's totes rad.

I've said the exact same thing with Red Orchestra 1.

I've only played about 3 hours of the game so far, but I'll try to put my experience into words.

To put it simply: it's intense. No other FPS creates tension like I had with my (short) time with RO2. When you're sniping from a window, there's a real palpable feeling of being completely vulnerable while looking for someone to shoot. Pretty much any hit will kill you, if not cripple you, effectively making you easy prey if the enemy is in any position to follow up.

It gets even more intense when you have to sprint across an open space to reach an objective. Sure, you have to do similar things in COD and BF, but if you're hit in the leg in COD, no biggie. Here, you immediately crumple, leaving you easy prey for another shot. When you do make it across a large gap with bullets flying all around you and whizzing past your head, it's exhilarating. It really feels like you accomplished something when you get past the enemy's defenses.

It's just as satisfying on the opposite end: when an enemy is charging toward your objective, pulling up your rifle, leading, and sniping them in the chest feels awesome, especially with the way the bodies slump and scream/gurgle realistically--not for the feint of heart. It's also nice to know that you stand a chance against groups of enemies. Don't get me wrong, it's always better to travel in groups. Yet because a single shot can easily take an enemy down, if you take a group of 2 or more enemies by surprise, you can wipe them out before they can really retaliate. This is much more difficult to accomplish in COD, because enemies are bullet sponges there.

The sound design is also awesome. All of the ambient sounds as you walk through a creaky, decrepit building add to the already sky-high tension, especially when the echoes of footfalls are heard all around you. Distant gunfire sounds exactly like it should, and comes from where it should--to the point where I used it to keep tabs on where the battles were taking place more-so than the mini map.

The musical score is also really well done and gives the game an epic feeling that I don't get with CoD's score-less multiplayer matches.

Aside from some rather (OK, incredibly) annoying bugs--like one where, at random, I'm instantly switched to the opposing team when I kill an enemy--I'm having a blast. I was certainly getting frustrated when I first started playing (ask Salsa!), because I'd walk into a map I'd never seen before, go to a window/corner/wall, pop up and get sniped before I even saw anyone. This was pretty much my first hour. But once you get your bearings and find a loadout you like, it's an experience I think no other game really duplicates, especially in today's COD-clone games market.

Oh, and please make sure that who you're aiming at is an enemy. Occasionally TKing is certainly understandable. I was just as guilty as any when I started out. But getting TKed 3 times in one round, forcing me to spend most of it browsing GAF while I was waiting for another spawn to be earned, suuuuuuucked.

I WANT IT NOW

But I need someone to confirm that I can play the game on my crappy PC:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ @ 2.9 GHz
ATI HD Radeon 4670 1GB
4GB DDR2 667 RAM

:(

Played for 2 hours tonight, game is glorious.

Runs great @ 2560x1600 on High, pushed it up to Ultra and maxed everything and it was a little bit chuggy. Will have to fiddle with a few settings to get a nice balance.

Game is damn pretty though!

fps isn't so good on my pc. it's somewhere between 30 and 45.

the game is pretty hard and the cover system is kinda wonky. need to play some more.

Knew I should have started the download before I went of to work.

"Starts download .... 400 kb/s ... 200 ... Update Paused ( wut ) ... 300 kb/s ... 1.2mb/s ... 50kb/s"

Is the game crashing at the server browser for anyone else?
Did for me. But I found double-clicking a server name quickly (before the crash) works in bringing me into the server. Sometimes.

I turned off SLi on the Nvidia control panel, seems to work now.

Just random luck. SLI has no effect on it, and SLI does actually work in this game, so you'll probably want to keep it on.

I tend to crash on the server browser one out of every 3-4 times.

The other annoying thing about the server browser is that it appears to be synchronized with the display...which is incredibly annoying as it causes my framerate to drop to 1-2 while it refreshes servers. This is going to be unbearable once even more servers pop up. They really need to make it asynchronous.

GreenManGaming has the game for 15% off - registers on Steam, plus you can take advantage of the coupon codes in the next few hours - after that, they'll be gone. Plus, instore credit if you register through a referal link. PM me for one.

The codes you can use are 20SUM-MERSA-VINGS, 20PEC-FACEB-SAVER, SUNNY-SAVER-20PEC

Oh the wonders of owning a multi-GPU solution =P

Ha. That's old thinking, though. SLI/CrossFireX work extremely well now...and scale well (to 3 cards, at least - it gets dicey at 4+ cards).

EDIT: and to understand where I'm coming from, I've owned the following cards/configurations since March of this year:

Radeon HD 6950 (single)
GTX 580 (single)
Radeon HD 6970 (CrossFireX) - current

I love how you can do things like control your breathing when aiming and blindfire from cover. And how they limit classes in the game. I wish all games did that. Limiting snipers is a must.

Would be nice to actually be able to play. Crashes when loading servers or right before the map is finished loading.

What? That is so not old thinking. Crossfire is still a fucking turd. I recently replaced a 5970 because Crossfire suffers from too many tiny niggles that just destroy a game. Whether it's graphical artifacts, weird stuttering and some times abysmal performance and overall support. Yes, it may scale well now but does NOT work "extremely well". And no, the "I never experienced anything" and "You must have done something wrong" is not going to fly because it's a well known problem and any Crossfire owner knows it's a big gamble, waiting for that new profile, waiting for an update, waiting for new drivers, turning off that extra card or just suffering through a plethora of issues in a heap of games.

It becomes extremely apparent when you play more niche titles, simulators, stuff like that where they don't have the budget to extensively work and test multi-GPU setups, you are usually fucked and even AAA titles you have to sit through some issues and wait almost a month for a new CF profile.

Yeah, multi-GPU is still very problematic. I only turn it on when a game actually requires it. Too many games have little issues (flickering shadows/gui, microstutter, performance issues) with it on. Other games just don't support it(The Witcher 2 has lighting through objects with it on, for example), some games are broken with it (Shogun 2 with hardware shadows runs abysmally, Trackmania 2 runs faster on a single card than it does multiple cards).

SLI is very much a per-title thing, for me. I won't be going multi-GPU in the future. While it's nice to have it for some titles (like Red Orchestra 2!), it adds a fair bit of troubleshooting to the experience.

the game switched me to axis without really telling me and I think I shot a few of my own man thanks to that... the HUD doesn't really seem to tell me which side I'm own?

Hmmm, is that Single-Player mission, that tutorial supposed to be playable? It's unlocked and selectable but it never gets past loading. When it's done loading it just goes back to difficulty select.

I want to try out graphical settings somewhere ... safe.

the names of your teammates should pop up when looking in their vicinity

Server browser doesn't refresh, I need to find all my servers under the friends tab.

Tried two servers, both were constantly lagging. Worked for 2 minutes then a 2 second lag spike that just warped me somewhere random. Then my Kar98 started auto-shooting :|

Dammit :P

Walking is _really_ fucking slow and boy does FuriousFighters encourage camping. Lots of camping in general in this game. Objection could have been more prominent as I often have no clue where to go or get lost in the maps.

That said, the hitbox detection is really good and picking off people with a kar of mosin nagant will never get old. It's not great, but it's enjoyable.

Well, I was expecting terrible performance with everything maxed out based on the posts in this thread but everything on Ultra, SSAO and the whole nine yards is giving me a steady 60FPS Vsync'd.

However, the lag spikes are making the game unplayable at the moment unfortunately.

I'm not arguing that there aren't issues, but it has worked extremely well for me. You've covered yourself from any debate by making your statement above (not like this is the place for it, anyway). So I guess it's just a different strokes thing. I like tweaking...it's not like I would recommend this setup to my Grandma.

Ran the UE3redist and it runs better now.

For people with the server browser still crashing: try not to move your mouse until the framerate stabilizes, then pick some servers as favourites and the next time click on favourites right away.

Is anyone doing an OT? I could help out if needed but I don't want to take on sole responsibility for it since it'd be my first one. I like collaborations! :P

Edit: Actually, if someone just tells me how people normally start these OT's and I will. Do they do it in notepad and then add the pics when posting? Any tips can help and I'll make it nice.

I had the same opinion about the objectives until i found out about the Tactical View (T). Really helpful, but i wish it was a toggle.

I'm absolutely loving this.

One of the most tense games I've ever played.

Also got managed to kill someone 191 metres away.

So, so good.

Marksman kit is awesome, shame it's limited to one. Picked off a few people from around 200m earlier.
