Reggie Asks Us: What developer would you like to see have a Nintendo franchise?

To those saying Mother + Atlus, I have to ask why? Is it because Persona is the only other RPG with a modern day setting in recent memory? Pairing the makers of a randomly generated dungeon crawler / dating sim seems like an ill match for an old school style RPG like the Mother series.

If I had to choose who to give Mother to, I'd go with Mistwalker. Specifically the Blue Dragon team. Both series already taste like Dragon Quest, so they got that in common. Also the way Blue Dragon handles their graphics is just the way I'd imagine Mother going into 3D. Both series have simple but rich and colorful environments with an emphasis on art design over over-detailing. The smooth rounded surfaces that Blue Dragon provides would be perfect for making the hypothetical Mother game look like EarthBound's clay models come to life. Of course Itoi would be in charge because Itoi is Mother. Think about it, it's perfect! Itoi would provide the heartfelt story and humor, which was the one poor spot of Blue Dragon, with a marriage of Blue Dragon and Mother 3's excellent battle systems. Charge meter and rolling HP in one system? Yes please!

I have to say this again:

Give Pokemon to Atlus R&D1, Nintendo!

I seriously, seriously have thought about this, even before this thread...it's a perfect match! OMG, IT WOULD BE THE BEST MATCH-UP EVEEEEEEER! Do it, Ninetdno--DO IT!

Oh, and I want to echo some other people's sentiments: make Monolith do another Baten Kaitos game!

Um. Atlus makes more than the Shin Megami Tensei series. And Persona, while super popular, is only a small part of the entire Shin Megami Tensei franchise.

Well, I was incredibly bored by the last few Zelda games. I felt like I had solved every single puzzle and played every dungeon at least a dozen times before. To get me interested in Zelda again, the franchise needs a huge shake-up -- and I think a more open world and game structure might provide that. So Rockstar or Bethesda felt like the logical choice.

As for Metroid, I didn't really like the Prime games and I'm not convinced of Other M yet. Not sure if Bungie could do better but I think it might be worth a shot.

One of the things that sets Earthbound apart is its great script. Why would you want to take that away?

/kidding
maybe

Treasure developed Star Fox is the best so far.

Kojima needs to be given a franchise that can benefit from all the 4th wall breaking and WTF shit coming out of left field. Eternal Darkness seems like the perfect fit.

God, no.
I would totally have them make a sequel to Disaster: Day of Crisis though.
Cinematic feel? Check.
Cheesy characters/plot/dialogue? Check.
Terrorist/military enemies? Check.
Metal Gear
boss fight? Check.
The game was ruined by the development hell it went into, and by the horrible (HORRIBLE) marketing by Nintendo (the game was coming out and no one knew what it was about, or even if it was still being in production). A hypothetical sequel developed by a better team with decent budget and half-decent marketing would give much better results if you ask me.

I've never been convinced of F5's ability to make a great follow-up to Pilotwings 64. Why not Paradigm Studios again? They might be the only developer to capture the aesthetic and feel of the second game.

Nothing against Square-Enix or you, but what exactly makes you believe that they can handle the hybrid action adventure & puzzle platforming elements of StarTropics?

WAYFORWARD! GET THEM TO DO STAR TROPICS!
Now THAT would be great. Forget the "popular" franchises. Bring back a classic. If Punch-Out deserved a re-imagining, so does StarTropics. And, after seeing what WayForward's done with the likes of A Boy and His Blob, I'm confident they could handle a new Mike Jones adventure.

On another note, those who said Treasure with Star Fox are also correct.

my mistake, Square Enix = Fire Emblem

Startropics = ? for me cause i never played it :D

If the next StarFox wasn't going to be on rails Nintendo should grab PixelArts, the guys who made Skygunner.

I would also love to see what Capcom could do with the Punchout franchise.

Disaster: DoC could've been the hardcore Wii IP Nintendo needs this gen. Could've been their answer to Metal Gear Solid, or even Uncharted (the Uncharted 2 sequence with the helicopter, shootouts and crumbling building are terribly similar to those in Disaster). Instead it's an unpolished, ugly arcade action/shooter game that utterly bombed due to Nintendo's mismanagement. They really fucked that one up.

Yeah, I bought it thanks to GAF's small fan base for it and was left pretty underwhelmed. Talk about a wasted opportunity.

But it was awesomely fun. Never repetitive or boring.
Although a better expansion o0f the idea, with better budget could be incredible.

Don't tell me. The one trailer they released right before the game came out pumped me enough to make me start the official thread. Also, the music in the video was so good.
I agree with your posts completely (except I still enjoyed playing the game), it's a huge wasted chance for a new interesting IP.

Yup. Too bad we all know this is not going to happen.

It was a fun game. Just an enormous waste of potential.

Double Fine on Wario Land
Retro Studio on Zelda
Treasure on Starfox
Amusement Vision again on F-Zero
Level 5 on Earthbound
Rare on Donkey Kong
Clover on Kid Icarus
Criterion on Mario Kart or F-Zero

The MotB team or Matsuno on Fire Emblem.

Double Fine + EAD Tokyo on anything (Super Paper Mario Galaxynauts?)

Wayforward on Metroid

In general I'd say that a studio doing a Game X at one time doesn't necessarily mean they're the go-to people for it 15 years later. However, a bigger problem: after bouncing around a few owners over the last decade or so, they apparently shut down last year.

Give F-Zero to the team that made X or the original...it'll likely feel better to Miyamoto and me. Plus, it won't have weird create-a-car/interviews.

For serious ones:

Give Eternal Darkness to Grasshopper. You know you want to, Suda51 + Insanity meter = excellence, even if I hate horror games.

Give StarFox to Treasure...this one is a maybe though. I don't want it to be a carbon-copy of S&P 2, even if Treasure does make really awesome shooters, and I've heard that they're similar now that the kids can fly.

Take Sonic from Sega. I know that's not much of a collaboration if Sega doesn't do anything, but it needs to be done. :lol

Do Kid Icarus with Vanillaware. I'm not totally convinced that they can make a game with dynamic gameplay as well as graphics, but hey...Nintendo can help with that. I bet it would be good.

Do an Atlus/Nintendo RPG. SMT games are some of the last great JRPGs, they would be excellent on many, like Mother or an old franchise that would actually make it here.

Keep just about anything else, except maybe StarTropics to WayForward or something really ignored.

I'm mostly satisfied with the state of most of the Nintendo franchises that I actually like, so I guess I'm in a good position. I'm not crazy over too many of their franchises, but... I like where Mario is right now. I like where Zelda is, and I like the team making those games. I'm very pleased with the state of the Fire Emblem franchise (the massive disappointment that is Shadow Dragon aside). I don't want to see anyone other than Shigesato Itoi making Earthbound, and a new Golden Sun was just announced by Camelot. I like the Mario RPG stuff getting made. Overall, I'm pretty happy.

The one franchise that I really like and really want to see something out of, though... I find a lot of the suggestions about the Kid Icarus series really frustrating and annoying. Stuff like:

I'd like a Kid Icarus in the style of God of War, so, any developer that can do that. Please.

Kid Icarus call it Icarus remove the kid do it with capcom Should do something like Chaos Legion and Devil May Cry and God of War style from it get Hideyuki Fukasawa from Chaos Legion to do the music.

Why are people suggesting something like God of War or Devil May Cry for Kid Icarus? Seriously. The original games were nothing like that -- why is it even worth reviving the series if you're going to alter it that radically? Is that really what people want? It's one thing to take a series in a totally new direction when it's been around for a while and its mechanics and tropes have been getting stale in the eyes of many (in this sense, trying something new with Castlevania, in the form of Lords of Shadow, seems like a good idea). It's quite another to revive a series that's been slumbering for almost twenty years and turn it into something that doesn't even resemble what it once was. That is very much a bad idea. If you people want games like Devil May Cry or God of War so badly... go play Devil May Cry or God of War. That isn't Kid Icarus.

MadOdorMachine said:
My fear with Kid Icarus is that it would be a Zelda clone. I admit I never played the original for more than a few minutes, but the series doesn't seem to have much to build on imo. Running around in a 3D world shooting a bow & arrow would be hard to get right.

A new Kid Icarus game done right shouldn't be a Zelda clone at all.

What I want from the series, honestly, is the SNES installment it always deserved but never got. I know this'll never happen, but it's what should happen, not lame shit like a God of War clone for twits too poor to buy the PS3 they really want.

I think that the original Kid Icarus, like a lot of the stuff that Nintendo created on the NES, was pretty rough, clunky, and experimental originally, but full of neat concepts and lots of promise. I'd say the same thing about Zelda and Metroid -- two series that were kind of neat at first, but didn't really come into their own until the gameplay ideas they developed were refined to a much higher level in SNES installments. (I felt the same way about the original Mario, but with multiple sequels on the NES, Nintendo managed to perfect that one even before they got to the SNES.)

I don't think a good Kid Icarus game needs to be 3D, and nor should it be 3D -- because I'd rather see them make that perfect 2D refined evolution first, where they take those original creative ideas and polish the hell out of them like Super Metroid and A Link to the Past. Put it on WiiWare, or, much preferrably, the DS (since vertical platforming on a two screened system would be a lot of fun). Collaborate with a talented 2D design studio -- ideally one like WayForward (or the old Capcom designers that used to make handheld Zeldas for Nintendo) that's likely to understand the spirit of the originals and work forward from there.

That's what I want. Super Kid Icarus.

Golden Sun - Overworks (Skies of Arcadia)

This, too, is a dumb suggestion. It might have made sense to suggest giving Golden Sun to another strong RPG developer sometime over the past six years when it seemed that Camelot was disinclined to continue their work on the series... but it's just stupid to suggest that less than a month after the latest game in the series was just announced, and with Camelot at the helm. If one liked the original Golden Sun games, then clearly that means Camelot did something right and they're going to be the best choice to continue it.
