Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

Yeah he is trolling GAF. "I have a system that is not only not selling, but lacks the power to compete with other next gen systems."

We do not need Assassins Creed, Watchdogs, GTA5, and so on. We do not need Madden, Fifa, and NBA2K whatever. I am sorry I cannot continue to play the fool. I think that maybe they have a year discrepancy on ... Sorry it would just be mean for me to straight up. Delve into the situation,

Those games are not coming to the Wii U and Reggie knows that better than any of us. It would be stupid of him to go into interviews whining about titles they aren't getting instead of the ones they do have. Did you really expect him to downplay the Wii U titles and praise the upcoming software from their competitors?

Go back 20 years and see a few 1st party Sony IP's that dropped off the map over time and are either stagnant or inactive.

Go back 20 years and find Microsoft's Xbox console line hadn't existed until 2001.

Ayup.

Yeah, that's called creating an IP, making some games, then MOVING ON to something new. Nintendo makes great games, but they've been using these iconic Nintendo mascot games as a huge crutch for decades now. And they've never been overly friendly to third parties, consistently undercutting their price by $10, it's no wonder they're being ignored now.

And this is coming from someone who has owned all their consoles (until now...and not virtual boy.)

He's just doing his job, people.

That's exactly the problem. He's doing a terrible job. He can praise his company's console all he wants, but going full out: "The launch catalog of the other consoles is meh" is a direct spit to the third party developers who are making those launch games.

It's basically like saying: "Oh yeah, all those games? First AND Third Party on the other consoles? They look uninteresting. I dont' care for them".

As a PR person he should think before speaking. He may be giving his opinion, but it is still PR talk, and PR talk speaks for the company he is representing. You just don't do that to Third Party developers, or else you end up like...

Well, like Nintendo.

I think it's pretty sad a company like Nintendo keeps milking the same old franchises and is afraid of trying to create some new IP.
Making HD ports (Zelda) and "recycling" a 3DS game (mario world) is not something I'm particularly interested.

Wow, what a great comparison. Wait, it isn't.

Tough tits, they don't make games that don't appeal to you, that's cool. And it's funny about the whole new IP thing considering more than half of each console's launch is made up of third party game sequels. You notice that each console is also using their first party muscles as well, what with a fourth Killzone and fifth Forza.

I swear, sequels are only a problem when people want them to be :/

I don't understand why so many people are coming for Reggie.....
What was he supposed to say? "Yeah their line up is amazing." This was basically what we could expect, and what would have been said by most people speaking on behalf of their own company.

The WiiU has the wonderful 101 and as someone who has the game I will say this, I doubt any of the launch titles for the other will come close to it's sheer awesomeness. It's amazing. Trouble is america won't find this out for a short while.

Akmost no one will find out because almost no one will buy it, just like in Japan.

Good games are great; they're better when people actually buy them. The latter is what Reggie should concern himself with, being an executive.

What made you the god of objectivity? I would think a major IP with high metacritic ratings and high sales would count. What other criteria would you need?

Probably a game that justifies the entire console by itself. Twilight Princess could've been had on the much cheaper GC as well. It helped, no doubt. It is something that doesn't really happen anymore now that most game genres have been explored quite well.

what Zelda game was available at launch for wiiU??

Reggie you are a dumbass

Wii U has Assassin's Creed and Watchdogs. GTAV is not on PS4/XBone either. What.

Ps4/X1 launch lineup is great, not to mention the versions of those games thay will be on pc. Wii U is great too this Fall.

It certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for him to say something like "There are a lot of great games that gamers will really enjoy coming to the other consoles this year, but let's take a look at the great selection of games that you will be able to enjoy only on Nintendo Wii U.".

Would that be so hard?

I love NSMBU and ZombiU but Reggie needed to be more diplomatic IMO.

The WiiU launch lineup was th e very definition of Meh overall.

I made this argument in my Indie Love-in topic, but i think the definition of killer app is different for everyone. For some people, a "killer app" is not merely a lone game, but a healthy eco system of games that allows you to feel comfortable knowing your idiosyncratic tastes are satiated while at the same time ensuring new quality content keeps coming.

That is why Sony's indie strategy, and Microsoft's every one is a dev kit, and Nintendo's extreme indie friendliness is all extremely positive developments for me: because alongside their AAA games, which take a little longer to develop and polish (ok: a lot longer), indie games will constantly be coming out to fill in the gaps. I know my investment is sound because these systems will have an extremely healthy gaming ecosystem, and that is the killer app.

You are right, but so far this years gaming ecosystem looks better or "healither" than the others, so he's right.

It'd be terrible business-sense.

Just reading it and holy.... hahahahaha.
Sorry Reggie, but the current WiiU lineup is a joke.
The launch lineup of the PS4 has more games I'm interested in, than the current WiiU lineup.

Nobody would do that. If you believe Sony and Microsoft would, I have a nice bridge to sell...

Right on.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Killzone, Forza, Dead Rising, and Drive Club will have higher metacritic ratings than all of Nintendo's exclusive launch titles.

NSMBU is currently at an 84.

Strange. The recent thread pointed out that he realized internal echo chamber hype was wrong. This suggests he's now buying Nintendo's BS, which might be dangerous for the company. If they don't realize that the Wii U is on the verge of irrelevance then the company will be even more at risk.

Console Wars®

Choose a side and:
Love it
Breath it
Die by it

Ok fair enough.

I choose Wii U and 3DS for its unique and great quality, generation defining (yes Mario Galaxy 1 and 2) hell of a lot fun games.

I also choose PC, free online MP, better graphics and performance, multiplats are better, 1080p60, MODs and cheap games.

So best of both worlds!!

Grabbing a PS4 at the end of the gen as a Naughty Dog machine

Well on one hand, I agree that it really is about the games.

But there are some great games coming out for PS4 and XBone too.

Anyway, Reggie is Nintendo so what is he supposed to say?

Wii U launch lineup, and fall lineup for that matter (IMO) is nothing to write home about. When the new Zelda, Mario Kart, and Smash come out, then I'll call their lineup amazing.
This is the usual mainstream stuff. You, actually everybody, should open up to more variety from time to time. E.g. Lego City and Wonderful 101 are excellent games and the upcoming X looks extremely promising. Wii had the same problem, good niche games like Little King's Story, Sin & Punishment and Zack & Wiki went under the radar.
and EXCITE TRUCK!!!

Just reading it and holy.... hahahahaha.

What about the upcoming line-up? Reggie is comparing their upcoming line-up the their competitor's launch-line up in that article. Reading comprehension fail?

No I would expect that he would work to attempt to bring the big third party games on his system.. And maybe he is trying, who knows what goes on while he looks upon the vacant ceiling of his apartment.

I'll give you KZ, Forza and Driveclub.

DR3... I dunno. That's a toss-up.

Driveclub looks amazing.

You should already know by now, by Kamiya himself, that scores don't matter, believe in yourself man! How much fun you have is what should be important!

Why would he have to say that though? Its all about self promotion. They're all in direct competition. He shouldn't promote other first party games, when he needs to sell his own. And there's not really a reason to word it like, "there's a lot of great 3rd party games coming to other systems, but look at us" The more people ignore the other systems the better for him. He was asked, what incentives people have to buy his system, and he said that his games are better.

You are right, but so far this years gaming ecosystem looks better or "healither" than the others, so he's right.

Of course a system that has been on the market for a year and thus have had games cooking in the oven for far longer are going to look 'healthier', it's such a non-point. At the market level obviously consumers don't care whether a system is out for a year or three, if the games they want are on a specific platform at the price they want they'll get it. But from a perspective of judging the launch lineup as "meh", it's highly ironic considering Nintendo's own launch lineup, which is certainly no better than XB1 or PS4's is (provided at least one or two of XB1 and PS4's exclusives turn out well).

So yes he's technically right, yes I understand the point he is making about the Wii U's current value proposition versus their competitors just getting out of the gate. But in the long run, it's a moot argument: everyone on Earth knows the PS4 and Xb1 are going to have infinitely healthier support from third parties, everyone knows they've got a significantly larger feature set and technical power and on top of that the roll out for exclusive games intended within the first year is significantly higher for both PS4 and XB1 that it is with Wii U even considering the end of year content.

I'm not trying to diss the Wii U. It's in the situation it is because its sales are miserable, and because Nintendo has had difficulty transitioning to HD hardware. I get it. I'm just saying Reggie was the wrong person to deliver this message.
