Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

It just gets worse and worse doesn't it?

I'm about

This close to cancelling my pre-order all together. Everything about this shit feels half-assed, or "economical". I'm waiting on the feature that makes it feel like I'm getting my monies worth. I'm not seeing a fucking thing yet.

if im on the go how am i gonna hold the switch and my phone at the same time
They want you to struggle juggling both in your hands until you inevitably drop your phone, your Switch or both and have to fork out egregious amounts of money in screen replacements.

Imagine having to trade Pokemon via your phone instead of directly from the Switch. Won't that be fun?

The more I think about this, the more the stupidity of it beggars my imagination. Nintendo is just so fucking clueless about how to succeed.

The core idea of the Switch is great - a portable gaming machine with HD graphics with a consolidated Nintendo software pipleine, but every element revealed so far is just ham-handed and myopic that is uncomfortable to even watch.

Which is stupid. This stuff should have been laid out during the presentation. But it's clear they either aren't developing it. OR it's whole implementation isn't ready.

I mean they are charging for the service later on. I wouldn't be shocked if we made it all the way to launch and we still didn't know how this all worked.

Right? The console is scheduled to release on 3rd march. Why the fuck they haven't clarified these things yet boggles my mind. We don't know the price (besides I bet it's gonna be 60$), we don't have any details about, they didn't show any demo, nothing.

... So, Nintendo is going to make what is likely to be one of the worst online matchmaking services ever, and then charge money for it? What? I hope they either give up on this or it fails badly, because this is a really bad idea. There is no reason whatsoever to force people to use an external device to have online chat and such, that's absurd! And they'd better not require this app to use online gaming on the Switch at all, because that would be incredibly obnoxious, both for forcing people to use multiple devices when they shouldn't have to, and for anyone who doesn't have a compatible device -- do you have a Windows phone or tablet or a BlackBerry or something? Too bad, this is sure to be iOS/Android only just like their smartphone games are. I don't have a smartphone (because I don't want one) but do have Windows tablet, but somehow I doubt it will be compatible with this thing. But it's not just about me, for so many reasons this is an awful idea. I like Nintendo a lot, and want to get a Switch sometime this year, but this is inexcusable if it's even close to true.

Oh yeah, and to add insult to injury, there will be no Miiverse on the Switch. I haven't used it all that often and I'm sure there are ways it could be improved, but having a system that lets people comment about individual games is great! Killing it for no good reason doesn't make much sense, particularly when your "replacement" is a phone app, of all things.

I wonder if they're going to implement some kind of conduct monitoring on the chat aspect of the app. Wouldn't it be crazy if cursing would get you a temporary ban from the app? Like if you let out a "FUCKIN BLUE SHELL I HATE YOU", during an MK race, or something.

RAM usage has scaled through the years, you're also confusing software-level and OS-level integration. An App isn't going to handle your game's actual matchmaking.
The Xbox 360 handled cross-game party chat on a 512MB RAM device, come on. The Vita does it, cross platform too, and free.

I have never owned a Wii U, it didn't sound right to me either, but someone in this thread was presenting that as a defence of this.

Mainly, nobody so far has said you'll need this app to view a friends list or message your friends. This app so far has only been discussed in the context of party chat and OS wide lobbies and matchmaking, none of which the Wii U was capable of.

It remains to be seen how much functionality the app is supposed to replace.

Yep.
I wish people would wait and hear the details. Yeah, it doesn't sound good, but wait and hear exactly what's going on.

When the president of the American branch of a company goes out of his way to make these statements, why exactly does anyone need to wait to point out that it's stupid bullshit?

The Japanese breakdown (unless it changed recently) also says it supports a standard 3.5mm with audio in/out. Its only the English breakdown that has "audio out".

It lets them free up RAM. Games handling it pull from whatever RAM is open (ie. everything but whatever is fixed to the OS), but if the OS does it it *always* has to reserved a fixed amount for the entire OS functionality. OS-level features don't scale, and they seem to have ripped them all out to free up as much RAM as possible for games.

the original xbox was able to do this, how much ram would these things really need?

I think the hardware itself is pretty sweet, but everything else is half baked and obviously not read for launch yet.

Sounds pretty indefensible tbh, morbidly curious to see what this show looks like though. Laughs guaranteed at least.

Would be hilarious if it's amazing too.

They aren't really trying to phase out 3DS yet, so hard to say the pipeline is consolidated

Enough with the fucking 'bulky gamer headphones' already Reggie. Your consoles haven't had decent audio out options to use gaming headphone properly to begin with.

Like I said, RAM usage has scaled as well. I don't agree with their minimalized OS but this is what they wanted, they wanted their OS to be as small as possible. This is the result.

I understand people saying what about those without smartphone, my question is what about those with Smartphone!, Most people have just one, and it's used to make calls from work and Friends and hell basic internet usage. This seems like a fucking battery drain proposition and cumbersome.

Do we have to time our calls when using this, would voice chat automatically mute us when call comes. Better yet, what Android update can this run on.

Remember Android has many versions, so not every smartphone user can benefit if it limits to a certain update.

And they're making people pay for it too =/

Wait. This bullshit is a PAID app? This would bad enough if it was free. But they expect people to actually pay an additional fee for the privilege of using a kludgy, jerry rigged online chat system? Lol

WTF is going on at Nintendo? Are they short on cash? Between every other pricing decision so far...and now this...I haven't felt this nickel-and-dimed since the last (and final) time I flew on Delta Airlines.

Wait for what?

This stuff is on their site.

Not the stuff people are making up in this thread. That's not on their site.

Anyway since when is the platform designating how individual titles handle matchmaking? Overwatch does things totally differently than battlefield and call of duty or watch dogs 2 or GTA online all handle matchmaking in different ways.

What's to think that switch isn't the same way, except to send a friend request or invite you open a phone app instead of going to the OS?

Matchmaking is done on a game by game basis, not an OS level. It wouldn't make any sense for Splatoon 2 to have the same matchmaking infrastructure as Mario kart and every other online game.

The app can't do anything by itself, it's just a client for the underlying services.

Well you pay for the online now, and we imagine (just logically) that the app comes with the cost of the sub

I hope Reggie isn't saying I'm going to have to use my phone as a mobile hotspot. Because my plan doesn't include that.

Am I going to have to pay for your app, your service, and a mobile hotspot fee?

This level of ram conservation makes it sound like multitasking apps won't be possible on the Switch, i.e. pause your game to access the menu and check messages or go on the browser.

Whats the bet Nintendo did this so they could Skimp on Ram for the OS all to fund the stupid Joycon controllers

Hey, don't knock the joy cons. They are the one thing that Nintendo actually got right.

This level of ram conservation makes it sound like multitasking apps won't be possible on the Switch, i.e. pause your game to access the menu and check messages or go on the browser.

What browser?

I'm seriously wondering what Nintendo plans on doing for people without smartphones. What makes this more bizarre, and actually makes me think this isn't the full story, is that flip phones are actually still VERY common in Japan

https://www.techinasia.com/japans-flip-phones-finally-dying

Meaning, that when the Switch launches, in Japan, almost 50% of potential users won't have a smartphone. Nintendo has always made decisions based somewhat skewed towards their Japanese audiences, so this seems a bit weird.

I think I'll wait and see what this really is

The paid service isn't even launching in Japan, I think? "The paid online service will be available in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico only at launch." This text was included on the Switch online services page before, but has since been removed.
