Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

It's very likely that this is just about OS level party chat and lobbies, rather than in game matchmaking. You'll still be able to play online in Splatoon 2 or MK8 Deluxe without this app.

I'm hoping so that would make sense I don't care about voice chat at all while docked I don't want to use a phone thats silly. Waiting for more news before I actually freak out.

This level of ram conservation makes it sound like multitasking apps won't be possible on the Switch, i.e. pause your game to access the menu and check messages or go on the browser.

There is no browser, so... yes, it would indeed be impossible.

Like I said, RAM usage has scaled as well. I don't agree with their minimalized OS but this is what they wanted, they wanted their OS to be as small as possible. This is the result.
Nah I'm sorry there's no excuse for not including something that has been the standard for more than 15 years, specially not with excuses as flimsy as this.

i think the phone stuff could work really well if done right but to execute that would require so much thoughtfulness, and forethought and a magical crystal ball (the one they used while designing the wii and the DS lite) that i'd consider it a longshot.

Wait. This bullshit is a PAID app? This would bad enough if it was free. But they expect people to actually pay an additional fee for the privilege of using a kludgy, jerry rigged online chat system? Lol

WTF is going on at Nintendo? Are they short on cash? Between every other pricing decision so far...and now this...I haven't felt this nickel-and-dimed since the last (and final) time I flew on Delta Airlines.

They aren't. We know from an investor's meeting that they had enough money when they were constantly losing money to keep losing money at that rate for the next 50 years.

That's what I thought. So the best course of action is to wait for more details.

no the best course of action is to burn it all down right now!

For better or worse I will revisit this thread once its announced to see who was right, who grossly overreacted and who was just hopping on the troll train.

Game by game matchmaking i'm sure will work as it does in every other game since forever. He's talking bout OS level stuff that happens outside of games.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo has said that it is done thru the phone app.

Still hope they meant in addition to being able to do it on the console.

The only things I've seen them say about the app is it's used for voice chat with friends and lobbies and matchmaking with friends. I don't recall seeing anything about friends lists relegated to the app.

This...isn't exactly a provable assertion. At all. This is along the lines of "Parent's won't pay $60 for games" and things like that, that have no actual backing (I also feel the people saying this don't remember when games were $70, without adjusting for inflation)

I dunno man, just look at different japanese data, data and voice and flip phone plan prices and then tell me.

I've only ever met either old people or people who don't care for anything technological and think that flip phones are cute using them im the last 2~3 years.

I'm not saying its an excuse, this is their mindset to it. That's all I am saying.

It would make too much sense to have the app on the Switch instead of an external device.
I am starting to think the Switch itself won't have many if any apps and you will be required to download them to your phone and cast them to the device.

Similar to some TV's that use android remotes that have all the streaming apps, settings etc. on it. I wouldn't be shocked at all if this is how it turns out.

So no multiplayer until then?

No? Software will handle its own matchmaking with its own servers.

This is about lobbies in the OS, outside of game matchmaking with friends. You're not going to pipe software matchmaking to an app to then pipe that over your wifi to matchmake to then pipe back to the app and then back to the system to get into a game. This is pretty much impossible to keep synced.

The App will be out in the summah though
Everything about the app and services makes it sound like the only reason it's free is that it's the open beta period during the summer to nail out all the bugs, before becoming a paid product in the fall.

The paid service isn't even launching in Japan, I think? "The paid online service will be available in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico only at launch." This text was included on the Switch online services page before, but has since been removed. This cached page includes it: https://webcache.googleusercontent....tch/online-service/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca

This makes it even stranger, if this is entirely how the system handles these features. They'r not seriously just going to bar crucial features from entire regions, especially in Nintendo's own home region, are they?

I really wish this had been elaborated on during the event. I feel like we're missing a LOT of crucial details

Well it sounds like the app will be free in their subscription service. So it'll never be a "paid" app, but to use it's functionality, you'll probably need a paid account

I'll post it again because people seem to ignore it in favor of more lol nintendo posts.

Matchmaking is not something your game console does. It is something that game software and servers does. It is set up on a per game basis. The online service itself can tell what players status is but it does not actually control what games you get matched into. That's why matchmaking works differently in different games.

Something like Xbox live or PSN handles the voice chat and invites/friend lists but it does not control what game you get out in when you select quick play in overwatch. Overwatch and the overwatch servers do that.

It would be totally insane to think that Splatoon 2 doesn't have its own servers and in-software matchmaking that is unique to itself.

That's not even it. Online gameplay is the only thing you're getting until the fall.

Incorrect. No voice chat and lobby creation.

the nintendo website says:
Free trial period starts in March

so there will be multiplayer

This app enables OS level party chat/matchmaking/lobbies. Online multiplayer is handled independently by each game so you will not need this app for general online multiplayer. Nintendo's website says this much.

Just with random players.

Want to play with a friend or talk to them? Use the app bro

So can or can't you party with friends?

The only things I've seen them say about the app is it's used for voice chat with friends and lobbies and matchmaking with friends. I don't recall seeing anything about friends lists relegated to the app.

I just checked, managing friends does NOT require the subscription, so it must be handled in the console itself.

Though why you'd want to add friends if you can't play online or chat with them is beyond me.

Somehow people will miss this point and instead get even more upset about misunderstanding things that should be common sense by now.

Oh god, now I think about Pokémon and how trading and custom tournaments will be mess. If all these comes out to be true, then I don't want Pokémon game on this system.
