Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

I feel like people are taking his comments with far too much weight.

I maintain my stance of simply waiting to see what they have online before i complain.
He's the President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America. NOT taking the statements from such an individual with great weight is the position which doesn't make much sense in this situation..

And in any case, what's the benefit of waiting and seeing exactly? Making some noise and making sure they know we don't like what they appear to be saying can help to get them to either clarify or change their minds. Waiting and seeing, on the other hand, has no possibility of actually doing anything at all, benefitting anyone, or helping anyone to achieve greater clarity.

Between the two, that makes the choice of what to do pretty obvious to me: if you're confused about something, why WOULDN'T you ask for more information as soon as possible to alleviate that confusion? Why wait to be spoon-fed the information instead? Who does that benefit and why is that the better choice in these situations? That's what I don't get.

Yes it is and you are conveniently ignoring all the other people calling you out. No idea why you are fighting so hard to defend this bonehead move and then make some bizarre Skype comparison.

What am I defending? I said voice chat shouldn't be paid when you have other services for free. 😂

What's vague exactly? Reggie seems to make it pretty clear that certain online functionality, such as voice chat, requires a smartphone for no particular benefit to the consumer. That seems pretty bad by itself.

And if you think we need to wait for more information, that's fine... but that's kinda what all the "outrage" is about to begin with: to make sure that Nintendo actually KNOWS and gets the message LOUD AND CLEAR that people are confused and to clarify their messaging. If people are happy to wait and do nothing until launch then Nintendo similarly has no reason to clarify ANYTHING until then. The only way to MAKE SURE that they clarify it is to make it clear that our purchases depend on them doing so. Otherwise, why would they give a fuck at all? They have no reason to.

So if that's how you feel--that we need more info--then you're really on the same page as those posting certain doom, as that's the whole point of such posts: to make sure this stuff is either cleared up or changed as soon as possible, so I don't see the point in actually deriding such posts as that wouldn't seem to be to the actual benefit of anyone in that case.

I just wanted to make a FE MOBA joke. Also, Reggie did not detail all the specifics of online play and what was going to be available. That's what I mean by "vague."

You know, that thing Nintendo is far too good at?

Lack of voice chat hasn't affected Splatoon, Mario Kart, or Smash Brothers online. I guess they're happy keeping that amount of people playing and don't want to increase it much?

Sure, but if your goals for the machine are just hang on to the Wii U audience then you're kinda fucked.

I don't mean literally. I meant the system is clearly designed and targeted for adults and is very un-friendly towards young children. It goes against everything Nintendo has ever done.

Honestly it seems like the most pick up and play device they've made since the Game Boy Advance. Kids not being able to use online features doesn't really make it unfriendly to them as long as they can grab a joycon and play.

Disappointing.

They're making a lot of bad moves with the Switch. It's like they haven't learned anything from past and other consoles, which is unsettling.

They'll let us know this Fall when they figure it out.

Man..... I've seen a bunch of your posts on the Switch and think you've been overly critical on a bunch of them.... but goddamn it I think you're right on this one. It's so depressing.

Sure, but if your goals for the machine are just hang on to the Wii U audience then you're kinda fucked.

Oh, absolutely. I'm not trying to defend this insanity at all, just trying to figure out why the hell anyone would think it's a good idea. Someone somewhere pitched this to a group of people and was able to convince them it was the best course of action. Who was it, and what arguments did they use? I'd love to know.

Matchmaking through the app, they can't be fucking serious. So if I don't own an iPhone or Android phobe I'm fucked? Jesus christ Nintendo!

The launch of the Switch has been such a massive undertaking, and this year it was particularly challenging to pull everything together to make it happen. But, whenever I was in doubt, what kept me going was the belief that Nintendo had to be back to give him a moment he was robbed of. Of course, I'm talking about Reggie. We often talk about great consoles on Gaf, but I wanna take a minute to talk about the great man behind those consoles. Last year Reggie's world was turned upside down when the Wii U flopped. We all have tough times to go through, but the true test of one’s character comes in how we react to those moments we don’t control. When judgments are made, or when decisions are rendered upon us by others, we sometimes cant comprehend. I think what happened to Reggie is a tragedy. But, he never complained. He just sat in an isolated room for months, looked inside himself and focused on his art. He hoped his love of entertaining us would carry him thru the darkest days of his career and I thank him for all that he went thru. You know, when I've questioned things in my own life over the past few years, I've drawn strength from seeing first hand how Reggie dealt with this inflection point in his life. He is one of the most principled, loyal and ethical men I have ever met. For most of the past year, I have tried very unsuccessfully to give Reggie the respect he rightfully deserves. I soon found out why. He is such a principled person, that eventually word came back to me, that Reggie just said, "I cant have that blood on my hands". He had to move on. And today, Reggie is rebuilding his life and Nintendo with our support. As far as I'm concerned, Reggie is a Goddamn legend. Reggie, its finally time to give you the respect you deserve. Your one of the most deserving men to have it. You have always been there for me and have never disappointed me. On behalf of My family and Myself, Thank you for everything.

Stop. Get some help.

Not sure if meme or borderline creepy.

*slowclap*

The game awards wasn't that long ago, guys.

You don't shit your pants when you drop a $99 Game Boy Advance (or a Wii U GamePad).

You don't get pissed off that your kid lost ANOTHER $50 JoyCon somewhere in the house or on the school bus playing with a friend.

The bulky headphones argument is dumb, but if the app pairs with the Switch in a cool way, I could at least see this functioning.

Say you're at a coffee shop (with a hot spot) and you get a notification on your phone (that you currently have your headphones/phone-mic connected to) that your buddy just joined a lobby in Mario Kart 8, and shortly after you get a party invitation.

Go to the app, accept party invitation, and you're talking to him. He's like "hey come play", so you hit "join game" or whatever and bust your Switch out of your bag.

If the app pairs with the Switch well, it boots MK and joins the guy's game while you're getting it out. You proceed to play, talk to him through your phone, and you can flick a "game audio" thing on it if you want.

It's not simple, but I could see it. Shrug.

That actually sounds really cool when you put it that way. Here's hoping they nail the details on that and other cool use cases.

I hope that if all this isn't backpedaled on. Then we see a backlash that makes the backlash to Federation Force look level headed and calm by comparison. I want like 15 change.org petitions.

I hope this is a fucking joke. I have supported the Switch to the fullest and have gone out of my way to pre-order one, but if this information is true and this is the only way to communicate with others then screwwwwww this shiet. Will just not bother with online then. Using two devices? Are you kidding me? Only the blindest of fans would support this.

I hope by the time I post this I'm proven wrong but if not, goddamn.

You can use the vita to organize parties with no need for a phone, you can even use the damn 3g version that no one wanted.
The difference is people actually want and own phones.

I kid, I kid, but really, the point is everyone old enough to participate online owns a phone so they can guarantee you're likely to have one and will actually use the app. I don't think PSN or XBL have a widely used phone app that manages their console social experience, do they? Like with the vita, there was no connection between your phone and your console.

Playing the "what if" game in the face of information. Also ignoring other posters questions to argue with me over semantics. I'll just throw you on ignore to avoid thread derailing.

How is that defending? Defending is "this is a great idea to have voice chat through you're phone". Don't lie on me bruh because if there's one thing I don't like is when people lie on me and change my words.

You know he is just a pr guy . . . Who is a executive officer.

Yes, they do, playstation app and smartglass.

You say that when the average 10 yr old is probably playing Call of Duty online.

What am I missing??

If I take him at his word, I can only assume that when Reggie mentions bulky headsets, he's suggesting you don't need a headset at all with this app because:

1. Competitor solutions leverage a ubiquitous connector with a vast number of form factors and sizes of headsets/headphones. Thus bulky makes no sense.

2. They aren't providing or pointing to a less bulky headset for phones. Again, putting into question the use of the word bulky.

3. Plugging a pre-owned headset into a phone in your pocket while holding the switch in your hand is just one extra device... The opposite of elegant.

If Reggie doesn't want you using a headset, and you have the switch in your hands... Is the voice app supposed to be used in speakerphone mode? This makes even less sense in a portable device, so now I'm back to square one and it's not the headset concern at all.

Either there are benefits not yet revealed, or this is marketing speak.

What am I missing??

There's people in this thread bummed out because they do not own a smartphone. I know it's odd in 2017 but it's not a given that everybody has an expensive thing in their pocket to make calls.

PSN has an app and it is optional. I can also use the system.

Why couldn't they just follow suit and do what ps4/xb1 do with party chat on the console? Especially since they market this as a home console first ?

Why does Nintendo intend on making things difficult for themselves ? I was so, so hyped for the Switch after that reveal trailer but now I don't have any intention on buying this thing. I honestly hope this thing fails massively and Nintendo finally has to go third party. They would have much more success, leave the console building to the experts.

I almost got beat as a kid for dropping my GBA and losing it somewhere so I dunno what you're talking about!

Wasn't really the angle I thought you were talking about but you're right that it's not really a kid's machine until the price drops, but the 3DS wasn't better at $250. (And even then, probably still wasn't on the table for families until the 2DS came out)

You say that when the average 10 yr old is probably playing Call of Duty online.

Kids having poor taste is all on them. They'll come slinking back for Pokemon eventually.

Hey I'm not saying it would be a good thing. We don't have enough info anyway.

Does anyone actually use those on their phones? I ask genuinely, I don't and don't know anyone that does so I wouldn't know.

I use mine to buy PlayStation games all the time. You know what's awesome about it?

I don't have to use it if I don't want to.
