Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

What if by doing this it meant a lighter weight OS, so eg you had 1GB more memory for games, and an extra CPU core?
If voice chat on the Switch took up 1GB of its RAM it'd mean offloading it wouldn't matter because those developers would be so incompetent that they couldn't do anything worthwhile with all the RAM in the system. Seriously. 1GB of RAM for voice chat? That'd be hilarious. Good luck getting Zelda to run on the Switch!

But let's keep going. What if by ditching a UI all together it freed up another gig and core? And how much more power could we squeeze out by nixing audio altogether? We have HD Rumble, maybe they can ditch the screen too! That'd be at least 2 cores and 3GB freed, we could play just by touch!

Ask your mom... but seriously, I just like good games. The Witcher 3, Fallout New Vegas, Tales of Vesperia, Shenmue, Super Mario Galaxy, Odin Sphere, Uncharted 4, Gears 4 etc. but not that shit I listed before. I've seen posters gush over that garbage, and they have received entirely too much attention imho.

I just asked. She said you probably shouldn't be allowed to post on this forum anymore. Sorry.

After the Wii U was a complete cluster-fuck, a lot of people who skipped it (like myself) have a lot of pent-up excitement/desire for a new Nintendo console...a chance to get it right this time. And the Switch does seem to have some pretty great potential. But I pre-ordered *in spite* of Nintendo's sales pitch thus far. It's like they're doing everything possible to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And its really pissing a lot of people off, for good reason. We want Nintendo to succeed in spite of itself.

Ironically, those of us who DID buy a Wii U have pretty much no reason at all to buy a Switch before Mario Odyssey releases.

Zelda is on Wii U same day
Mario Kart 8 is a Wii U game we've had for years
Smash 4 is rumored to be on Switch, we have that too
4 years of VC still dripping out good stuff vs starting over from ZERO AGAIN.
Many great Wii U games *not* coming to Switch
Free Online!

There really isn't much of anything that has been announced that would motivate a Wii U owner to buy a Switch in the launch window. We'll see after E3.

We already took a gamble on Nintendo's system despite all the red flags.

I'll never pay for online but eirther way if Switch is like a tablet then why not have the voice chat and lobby app on there? It makes zero sense to juggle two devices just to have these features. You'll probbaly see the notification that someone wants to chat on the TV or controller screen, right? So then you can't do a thing there but you have to find your phone and start an app to chat?? Makes no sense. It'll be a seriously bad user experience no matter how cool or cheerful they make the app or whatever.
The only reason I see them doing this is if the devs that helped them with the online swrvice was a mobile dev, or because they want to use ads for Super Mario Run in the online app.

This is both a genius and a dumb idea in one, rare that one of those pops up. If it wasn't a paid service I think it would be recieved a bit better.

Thank god I don't use voice chats. Because this is disgusting.

I can understand that Switch has some limitations, it's a handheld in the end than a home console, but integrating a microphone should be pretty easy and cheap nowadays.

Come on Ninty, you can do better than this.

BUUUUUUUUURN!!!!

That's not for you to decide. Or Nintendo.

It actually is for Nintendo to decide what the requirements are for the use of their online services. There's no basic human right saying any person of any age must be allowed access to online gaming services without a smartphone, without getting into the fact that there are basically no reasons to own a non-smart phone in 2017, other than personal choice, one which you're free to make but isn't without consequence in terms of other conveniences.

Are you saying they don't have a smartphone because they can't be trusted with it and not because the parents think he doesn't need a fucking smartphone at the age of nine?!

The arrogance of your post is staggering.

I'm saying a 9 year old who doesn't have a smart phone probably also doesn't necessarily need to be playing online games, both from a maturity and exposure perspective.

God damn.
Nintendo Switch Launch Thread |OT| Where's the games? Ask your mom.
Lol

How about instead using your console thats crippled into needing a phone, I just use a phone and save space. I can't believe they somehow made their online WORSE.

I do have to applaud their creativity and balls quite frankly., if I had tried to make it worse how many of us would have thought about this ;)? :(

Nintendo could have just made a powerful console to match PS4, skipped the HD rumble and portability, kept discs, copied virtually everything the others have. I know a lot of people really wished they'd done this.

I'm really glad they didn't do that, personally. I have my PS4 and Xbox One for big AAA games, online multiplayer titles like Battlefield 1 and so on. To me the Switch is refreshingly different, and offers what hasn't been done before for those that want something else.

I think you're wrong there. I seemed like a lot of people are/were excited at the prospect of having a powerful portable/home console hybrid. Willing to sacrifice things like discs or graphics.

On the other hand there are standards/norms in the market that are already in place that probably should be met. Otherwise, you could have a reaction like this in which it will lead to bad/sour press. If they are going to charge people for online, like the norm, people are going to expect something at least on par to the norm.

I don't even know what this is. lol. This is on a whole other level. The logic is so ambiguous.

Is there confirmation that none of this stuff is possible WITHOUT the app? It just seems completely superfluous for something like this and an absolute hassle for 3rd party devs to deal with it.

You can use all phone headsets universally on other home consoles for online play? Without issues?

Bluetooth headsets, no. Others, yes.

But then again, literally where the fuck are you going with this? You're not making a point anymore. You're just fucking talking. If Nintendo was so very concerned with "eliminating the gaming headset" they could have just given the Switch Bluetooth headset support. So again, your scenario isn't a solution to some "problem". Further, again, you haven't addressed the fact that this creates situations where players have to have two headsets at once if they play with headphones. Or address how requiring the player to juggle two devices and splitting your console's functionality across both pieces of hardware and two different pieces of software across each is sensible. Or what players do if they don't have a (supported) smart device. Nor how having this smart phone app as an option means the functionality can't also be included in the console itself anyway, meaning it works for both the theoretical people who actually would be happy to use this and people who want their basic console features on their actual console. Or any of the litany of other bits of nonsense surrounding this whole thing.

All you're doing is apparently repeating that "hey, you don't need to buy a new headset, and I'm assuming everyone has a Bluetooth headset already and am ignoring the fact that Nintendo could just add Bluetooth headset support to their actual console instead moving everything over to an entirely different device in 2017" which is not a very good point at all.

Portable Zelda and Bomberman. Those are my excuses.

This is clear to me

And as for voice chat, it sounds like that functionality will only be in the smart phone app, not something that is actually going to be part of the Switch system itself.

“Right,” Young said. “That’s what we’ve been discussing, is that this app will allow you [to use] the voice chat.”

Neither does a Dualshock or Xbox One controller. They all have headset jacks though.

And if PDP's actually selling a headset for the Switch, it has to have voice built into the OS. Otherwise it'd make no goddamn sense.

Wasn't defending. Just explaining.

voice chat is 90% confirmed. only thing missing is an official nintendo press release for me to make it 100%.

everything else we don't know yet.

This seems like a good a place to ask as any:

1) Has Nintendo said anything about whether multiple Switches can do multiplayer over ad hoc connections in areas where wifi isn't available?

2) If so, will the paid-for online service be needed for these ad hoc sessions?

This seems so ass backwards. I never thought it could be this bad. And to top it off Nintendo wants to charge for this.

It has only 3gb RAM, how on earth would you expect it to run games at relatively acceptable presentation in year 2017, while still allocating more of that tiny RAM to voice chat app.

It almost has to be for them to talk up this up so much. I can't believe everyone involved is just so stupid regarding the questions over voice chat that they'd constantly reiterate that it's done via the app otherwise. These people are professionals trying to sell shit, if it had voice chat without the app they'd say so. The alternative is that they're stupid.

Amazing how people love jumping to conclusions before any hard facts are revealed.

Well voice/party chat not being on the console os for one, which for my friends and I is a huge thing, was confirmed last page.

I am going to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt here and say basic MM will still be able to through console and it's games.
