Remakes! REMAKES!

Why oh why is this such a popular idea among gamers on this board? "Well, they should remake FFVII!" "Oh man, they should remake Silent Hill 1 on PS3!" and more recently, EGM pushed this one onto IGA in an interview: "Hey, bitch, you shall remake SoTN for PSP!"

That's not to say I don't enjoy these remakes. But I think it's a waste of resources.

They make new games, they make remakes. Buy what you like.

I don't like sport manager games, but I don't question why people buy them.

I LOVED REmake, but hey, I'd rather those talented group of people that made REmake make a new game rather than redo an old one.

Companies remake and re release games all the time so people are obviously going to want their favorite games from those companies to be remade.

Yeah, I don't get the remake love myself.

If you loved the original game then play the original game. Remakes tend to be mixed blessings in execution anyway.

It's just a sign of an industry so devoid of creativity, it needs to feed on itself to survive.

Remakes are cool tho =)

Why bother? Most people just complain about them when they don't score a very good review (since its basically just improving the graphics of and old game with a few extra features) and say it isn't as good as the original.

example: Metal Gear Solid remake for GC.

People like sequels and people like extensions to the franchise.

If you are an executive of a multibillion dollar company, would you rather take a chance with a brand new IP, which could succeed or fail easily.

Or for less money, would you release a remake of a game proven to be a great seller on which you only need update the graphics control and content?

Gamers themselves like series and sequels and remakes. Most people have trouble taking a chance on a movie for 10 dollars, but a game that costs 50 dollars and has no recognition other than brand name or developement team is a huge risk. Also it's harder to describe the action of playing a game than the plot and visuals in watching a movie, so it's much harder for a gaming consumer to decide well lets try this untested game.

They should remake F-Zero X+Expansion pack on Revolution. Best controls ever in a racing game (sliding is much better than in F-Zero GX, so F-Zero X>F-Zero GX control-wise), near perfect road design on most courses, very well balanced drivers and nearly endless new courses thanks to X-Cup and Level editior...
They should vastly improve the graphics and increase the speed. Best racing game next generation =).
Ehm what did you say?

Strider could definately use a remake. I don't even consider its sequel a proper sequel.

Remakes only make sense when the first game is so archaic or plagued with problems that it's unplayable by current standards. The Conker remake was completely unecessary, and the Resident Evil remake, IMO, was pretty pointless unless you're a graphics whore, because it was still archaic. I could see how the Ultima games could benefit from a remake, and maybe FF3 DS.

I see your <3 and raise you to <3 <3 <3. Please also remake Ultima Underworld I and II.

Plus the SaGa games from the GB to the GBA or DS.

MOTHERFUCKING GRANDIA GAMECUBE THAT I WAS ROBBED OF! Better come to DS/PSP/whatever or heads will rolll! I'd buy an N-Gage if it had a proper remake!

Famicom and SFC FEs in English please.

I want a Jumping Flash! compilation on PSP (with enhanced graphics bitches, I don't want no Mega Man Legend type of crap).

what people here on GAF continuously fail to realize is that publishers don't put out games for us.

there were many years between the releases of RE1 and REmake, and in that time many new people joined gaming who had never played the original. so as an easy way to get some sales and introduce new people to the franchise, capcom totally remakes the original so that people new to the series will buy it and adds enough extras to make it worthy of a purchase from RE1 vets. all this without having to spend all that time coming up with new stories or scenarios.

while it's true that we would rather have developers working on new games, sometimes they simply don't need to and can pump out a remake which is guaraunteed to sell for mega profits.

we make up a tiny fraction of the industry and publishers only care about the bottom line. good remakes are a very smart thing if done right and marketed right, and because it's good for the publishers, it's good for the developers and it's good for the industry. which in turn makes it good for you and me.

conclusion: remakes pwn.

I second this more than the arabic numeral 2 and the letters "n" and "d" could if they all posted on this board in unison.

I'm the kind of jerk who has been so spoiled by WASD and mouselook that, even if I can go through all the DOS emulation nonsense and stuff to play the games, will still find them agonizing to navigate.

I'm not really much of a person for the latest, greatest graphics. But if the entire catalog of Bullfrog and Origin games from the early-to-mid-90s was reproduced with today's production values (in the sense of aesthetics, not design), then......shit, I don't know. I can't even begin to describe how wonderful that would be. Wonderful.

It was necessary from a storyline standpoint.

Remakes are good imo. As said before, since the originals, new gamers enter the industry, the huge leap in graphics, physics, and what not certainly help bring the game creators initial vision to life. As long as the market isn't over populated with remakes and new fresh ideas are still coming out, I'm all for them.

I'd take a next gen remake of MGS3 or any of the first 3 Resident Evil's (with the RE4 style gameplay/camera), over a run of the mill GTA clone anyday.

You want a remake of a game that isn't even a year old? You people are fucking retarded.

In the last two generations too many good ideas have been limited by their platforms. I think the remakes are a great idea, all that missed potential is a great resource.

Amen. As long as they keep the gameplay and controls and what have you completely intact, remakes are a great opportunity to give some games a presentation cohesion that they otherwise never had.

Of course, that's a big "as long as" and games like The Twin Snakes definitely drop the ball and give other remakes a bad name. But REMake...god damn, that's how it's done.

remakes suck.

unless its a game i love :)

bring on halo 1.5!

....

I was pissed because I was always Jimmy(Red Guy) and my friend was always Billy(blue guy) and on the cover Jimmy has the girl, but at the end of the game its Billy's GF and Jimmy is left alone holding his nuts...:(

Remakes are kind of cool, as long as they don't take over.

I dunno. Say after MGS4 is completed, let's assume that's the end of the MGS series. It would be kind of cool to have a (properly done) remake of 1 2 and 3 and be able to have them all on one console, all MGS games with those insane graphics. But I'd probably rather Kojima just make a new game series.

I don't think the idea of game remakes is so terrible. And I think there is a big difference when compared to something like movie remakes. Games are so inherently tied to the hardware they are produced on that when a few generations of hardware pass and standards rise, that mixes with nostalgia and people begin to speculate on what their favourite game would be like if it was to come out now. So many sequels in games are already pratically remakes themselves, why not play something similar with a setting and scenario that you love. There's no guarantee that a new setting, new characters, etc. will appeal to you in the same way.

I think it is ridiculous to say 'but people have already beaten it, why would they want to play it again'. Why is it only with games and not music or movies, that there is this idea that once something is beaten, that's it's discarded onto a pile, unless they are unlockables as incentive to replay. There seems to be no conception of replaying something just for the enjoyment that it gives a player. You don't listen to an album, think 'now I know all the tunes' and never listen to it again. And I doubt there is anyone in the world who doesn't have a whole armful of movies that they've watched over and over, until they know them inside out and still get enjoyment out of watching them again.

While a developers personality will have a bearing on how a game turns out with games, unlike movies and music, how that vision manifests itself is more removed from the reality of the game, in particular because of the limitations of technology.
