Remedy Wants To Be European Naughty Dog, Says Alan Wake 2 Director

Remedy Entertainment has long been a fan-favorite developer in the industry, and the team’s success with Alan Wake 2 in 2023 has seen it reaching new levels of mainstream popularity.

Alan Wake 2 was praised for its gorgeous visuals, mind-bending story-telling, and more. In many ways, it was one of the best horror games released in 2023. During a recent interview, the director explained how Remedy Entertainment created such an exciting game.

Going by his words, the studio took direct inspiration from the team behind Uncharted and aimed to become the European equivalent of Naughty Dog.
Kyle Rowley recently appeared on the Behind The Voice podcast and discussed his history with the industry.

When asked about his initial experience working with Remedy Entertainment, Kyle Rowley described how he approached Quantum Break’s development. Kyle Rowley stated that he was inspired by Uncharted and aimed to replicate Naughty Dog’s quality in his work.

I think we should be aiming to be like the European version of Naughty Dog.

-Kyle Rowley
He later went on to direct Alan Wake 2, a game that offered the same cinematic flair that has become synonymous with Naughty Dog’s work.

While Naughty Dog needs no introduction, Remedy Entertainment’s praise of the studio is a huge deal. The team is known for creating genre-defining IPs like Max Payne, so this statement highlights just how far PlayStation’s premier studio has come over the last two decades.

While Naughty Dog is famous for multiple IPs, Uncharted and The Last of Us have made the biggest splash. The former is still recognized as a major part of PlayStation’s legacy, while the latter is considered the most awarded franchise in the industry.

Therefore, it seems fitting for Remedy Entertainment to be looking up to one of gaming’s best and most talented teams. Perhaps this inspiration will shine through in the Max Payne remakes, the next major project from the team after Alan Wake 2.

They pretty much have been since Quantum Break. Just lacking consistent funding and sales.

They're a bit more experimental I'd say, but not as huge budget, especially Control. Unless they have someone footing the bill, that's where they'll stay (if they're lucky). FBC looks decent.

Never had much love for this studio. Control is the only good game they've made. And that game was fucking great. I do appreciate them being so experimental and original with their games though. Horror and surrealism are difficult genres to operate within so it can't be easy to break genre conventions like that in the triple A space.

I'm assuming they just mean mimicking their success rather than anything else. Remedy are already a better studio than Naughty dog are creatively. It's just Naughty dog's games fit into a more mainstream genre.

Same here. I tried Max Payne back in the day and never could get what people liked about it. Hopefully they can make Control 2 without losing the magic that made it so good.

Its cute to want things

Without a big budget, they wont reach nowhere near ND level in any way. Even with budget, they would fall short. In terms of gameplay animations, for example, AW 2 isnt any better than Part II from 2020.

They should keep doing their own thing. Tho hopefuly better, cause AW2 was a huge letdown.

Naughty Dog's only talent is graphics technology.
99% show, 1% game design substance
Eeeeh, as much as I detest Naughty Dog for what they've become, their combat mechanics are very solid. You can't imply that they're making basically walking simulators - it's much more than that.

If they weren't Californianized, they would be the perfect Sony-game-interactive-movie makers.

their combat is mediocre at best. in Uncharted it's either too easy, or it's just hard enough but prevents you from using most mechanics in order to escape its hitscan enemies. depending on your difficulty setting.

in TLOU it's nothing special either. not bad, but nothing that stands out.

so they would be the best at making cancer?
sure, but that doesn't change that these kinds of games are by default just bad games.
the pretentious slow walking shit, the fake obstacles, the half scripted gameplay, the heavy reliance on context sensitivity, the NPC chatter that spoils puzzles or constantly tells you what to do next etc.

the more of these elements a game has the worse it is. and best case scenario would be a game that has zero of them.

Should take more cues and inspiration from Capcom games. Their best ones like Max Payne were mostly great due to the shooting and unique movement mechanics. Not cinematics or presentation. Basics first.

AW2 was a massive step back from Control and even the first AW.

Alan Wake 2 still wasn't profitable last time I checked. Maybe try focusing on making some money first or your studio won't be around soon to call itself "the European Naughty Dog".
