Remember Activision O2 games

Deep thoughts:

I was in Eb yesterday and picked up tony hawk underground 2 for 6.99. I noticed that Activision had not put the O2 badge on it. I wonder if anything could have been more done to death than extreme sports this gen. I loved the games for awhile but it was just too much even I lost interest.

Will extreme sports make a come back or was it a flash in the pan?

Activision lost tens of millions through research, acquisitions, licensing and development in extreme sports. For several years they were absolutely convinced they could build an extreme sports category under the O2 label that could rival EA in traditional sports. It wasn't until the Matt Hoffman, Kelly Slater and Shaun Palmer games bombed that they realized all their work was for naught and quickly retreated back to focusing solely on Tony Hawk. As it turned out, the exteme sports segment was not nearly as strong or long-lasting as their research and focus groups had led them to believe.

Ironically it was Shaun Palmer Snowboarding on PS2 developed by the former Cool Boarders team (UEP System - now defunct) that sold better than anything else, save for Hawk's miraculous evergreen staying power (Neversoft = gods).

Bleah. I hated the Cool Boarders series.

They only did the first two. After that 989 did them with some other, US-based team. It was weird that CB 2 and CB 3 played COMPLETELY different.
