Remember when TLC was good?

They used to have good, interesting, educational programming. I loved that channel.

Now all they ever have on is those remodeling shows. I wonder how a TV station goes through such a dramatic change in programming.

Yeah TLC used to be the shit back in the day, they had the best documentaries on everything. Whatever you needed info about, nature, lost civilizations, science, sex, they had your back. I still remember how awesome their Atlantis and 7 wonders documentaries were, although H-channels 7 wonders rocked just as much. Now it's all just shit, it's not just TLC either, alot of these channels are getting crappy. Keeping up with the reality craze is probably the only way they can stay in buisness now that stuff is pretty much dominating the whole television market.

Hang out with Steve.
I disagree that it's all shit -- my wife & I enjoy Trading Spaces, While You Were Out, and Clean Sweep, and I like Overhaulin'. But I do agree that it's less about learning and more about makeovers -- home, car, style, etc. -- than it used to be. The name's kind of a misnomer now, which is why I think they announce it as the letters "TLC" rather than saying what the words mean verbally.

Oh, the TLC of old is still around. It's just been expanded into a suite of Discovery Cable Channels:

Discovery Kids, Discovery Home, Discovery Times, Discovery Science, Discovery Wings, and Discovery Health. They're often my "fallback" option.

But yeah, the basic TLC channel goes after the ratings.

The other discovery channels like science etc. are still good, but yeah, the motorcycle thing is totally out of hand, and I hate monster house. That "Big" show really sucks too. The history channel is still pretty good, but I think it's been getting a little soft lately as well, that tactical practical whatever show is pretty bad, and the command decisions one is terrible.

At least History Channel has remained unchanged since its conception.

Actually, they had their flirtation with hardware for a couple years there. The problem I have with the history channel is that they seem to think history started with 1939 or something.

I have started to only watch History International and the other Discover Channels, especially Discovery Times, which has really good documentaries based on current events. The best footage from the Iraq war I think.

TLC, The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet are all shit.

At least there's still Nova on PBS... if I could ever figure out when it's on...

TLC has gone from completely educational, to intelligence insulting.

The History channel is good but as another poster had said, they seem to think History started in 1939.

Mail Call just kicks ass, though.

I really don't mind TLC's current slew of programming, it was silly with the Discovery Network at the time anyways. I found myself watching the other network as opposed to TLC. But TLC does have its occasional documentary, but there are digital networks for that. ;)

I really enjoy the reality shows on TLC, let's face it those shows are real reality, especially the ones along the "story" line. Datring/Wedding/Makeover >>>>>>> Anything those main networks can "think up" for their latest reality fad. Trading Spaces, While You Were Out, Clean Sweep, etc are fun to watch as every show is a different case and they hardly ever seem to come off boring. Plus they don't go through many tricks or gags to keep you watching, it's the same formula many times with the occasional special episode. It's just entertaining for me, anyways. Also, I've fallen in love with What Not To Wear, I'm not sure why, I used to hate it, but it's pretty amusing to watch now.

That's cause they can get stock footage from that time on. Anytime below the WWII era, and they have to hire actors to replicate scenes.

History channel is starting to suck again anyway. I dunno how many time I've seen "Modern Marvels!" -- I hate that show.
