I agree with the ones you suggested, with tiny disagreements. Environments on Metroid Prime were incredible, but some of the enemy design was kinda bleh. And although visually the art in 3rd Strike is amazing, I have to say I dislike the design of Gill. But Hugo makes up for it and more.

I'm not talking about games as a whole, I'm talking about moments in a game where you just went "...stunning." I didn't feel like capturing screens from all of these games to get the perfect shot, so I used the best I could find on the net ;)

In that case: great job!!

I spent forever in the scene from ICO with the tree. I just kept rotating around it, and looking up through the branches. I also love the scene against the cliff face with the rain beating down... and the underground waterfall area.

I know the backgrounds are pre-rendered..but those Resident Evil shots look just as good as any next-gen screens IMO.

Makes sense.

OMG... soulmate??

I did the exact same thing. The light coming trough the leaves had this sorta haze effect... absolutely beautiful. I must have spent at least 30-60 mins at that place just taking in the atmosphere. SO GOOD IT MAKES MY HEAD HURT.

Yep. I couldn't believe how real it felt. I don't care what anyone says about how techincally advanced it was, or not, or hi-res it was, or not; I just know that it reminded me of laying on the grass on a summers day staring up through a tree as the sun peeked out through the leaves. So... wonderful.

Before I ever heard of HDR, or bloom lighting, or whatever:

For some reason, this scene always stuck with me. I haven't been able to shake it.

Monkey Island should have never gone 3D

A lot of Sega Saturn games had really nice art direction, I think. With some better 3D capable hardware, they could look breathtaking.

Nice nod to ZOE 2 (one of the most beautiful games ever made).

Also, Final Fantasy XI, despite being one of the biggest wastes of time on this planet, has an amazing artistic touch to all the areas. The most beautiful MMORPG of them all, imo, even running on a low-end PC or a PS2.

The handdrawn art for this game is so awesome:

SaGa Frontier II was a pretty drab game, but the water-colored art was really eye-catching and memorable.
