Remote Play Thread: Play PS4 games on Vita/VitaTV via WiFi at home or away

Blown away how well remote play works. I was trying to finish a mission in ACIV and had to take a poop. Grabbed the Vita, went to the can and continued the game in OLED glory.

Virtually no lag, very little compression and looks great. Wii U eat your heart out.

So disappointed it doesn't work for me. First day it worked PRETTY well, and now every time as soon as I connect and on it CONSTANTLY messes up and glitches. About three to five feet away from the ps4. Was hoping this was a game changer, and was hoping to give my Vitabros tons of impressions and tests, but its a complete failure for me. As such, and because quality and whether it even works varies so much, I can't remotely recommend anybody with a PS4 buy a Vita for this, or anybody with a Vita buy a PS4 for it unless they somehow KNOW it works in their set up. Wii U Off-TV this is NOT.

For the people that it works perfectly for, that's awesome. For me, its one of my biggest disappointments.

Edit: Sorry, I was mad. That sounded harsh. I really hope it gets better and starts working more seamlessly. I am looking forward to its future.

Sounds like WiFi channels are clashing. Try this

Sorry to be dense, but could someone break down how it works that I can be miles away? I mean, yeah, the internet, but how? I'm assuming I have to get a static IP or something? Is this going to be automatic and I don't have to do anything? Sorcery, I tell ya!

Its sorcery. :)
No, you dont need static IP for your PS4 to play over internet. Vita will know at what IP adress your PS4 is because, even if your dont have PS+, PS4 maintains connection with PSN. Vita will contact PSN servers, and quickly get latest PS4 IP adress.

The fact that remote play supports god damn Ethernet is what makes it really shine (even though you need WiFi access point at the very end). I mean, Ethernet is such a great tech that it elongates the range within your house with adding only very little lag.
I'm happy that each room in my house is connected by Cat5e cable.
Now only thing I must do is wait till Japanese release.

Jeez, I guess I was totally wrong about Remote Play. For some reason I thought it only worked well on your home network so I was in no big hurry to get a Vita. After seeing how well people say it works away from home (wifi and LTE), I think I'm going to have to get a Vita ASAP.

Although I'm really curious how much data it uses over LTE, I have a feeling this is going to obliterate my shitty 4GB/month plan.

It will. And latency wont be great, but it will be "usable", depending on what your personal limits are.
~5mbit is 2.3GB per hour.

LTE will be a lot more dodgy if the latency isn't low. You should test your ping times in locations you would use it. That one video demonstrating it over LTE had a 35ms ping time when it wouldn't be unusual for a lot of people to have 80+

Netflix didn't work but NBA league pass works flawless and looks awesome.

Remote play is awesome.

my only option to add would be to be able to switch wifi and direct while in remote play. As there times when I close I want direct and when I go couple of stories up I want wifi

While I don't have a PS4 yet. I do have a tip for people looking for wifi signals clashing around them.

Download inSSIDer for Home or the andriode app from metageek. It'll give you a list of all the wireless networks around you it can see and what channel they are on. It's really helpful if you are having spoty wifi or wifi that suddenly cuts out. I used to fix a router needing a reboot everyday it turns out someone had set up a new wireless router in the area and was interfearing with our signal. We switched channels and haven't had the issue since.

It'll give you a fancy easy to read readout like this.

Can anyone with Ps4 and vita tell me whether 'activity feeds' are compatible?
Can i see what ps4 friends are doing via the vita friends app activity feed?

Remote Play at large distance - New York to New Jersy
PS4 - fiber line - 85/45 mbit
Vita @ WiFi connected to fiber - 20/20
In description 50miles away, in video he says "over 100 miles away"

That's great :)

Can't wait until we see people try crazy distances

Like half way around the world

Wonder if I can play my ps4 on my vita while on vacation in the Bahamas

Feel like the crappy hotel wifi will probably not be conducive to RP

EU>US ping is 150-250, that's not including PS4 rendering time. It will be unplayable.

IMO, with good infrastructure, gaming at sub-300km distances will be acceptable.

Wow, that's really cool. Thanks a ton for the explanation. Can't wait to do some remote play this upcoming week while at the folks'.

Ok GAF, I got Remote Play to work over the Internet. Now, I'm positive I tried this yesterday, but I removed any port forwarding rules that I put into my FiOS router. Then, after that, I turned off the DMZ. No good. Could not connect. Then I said, you know what, let me put it back in the DMZ. Hit apply. I tried it, looked down, and it said checking connection environment!!!! WHAT!! Success!

And it worked pretty great. I live in an apartment building so I have literally 40 - 50AP's around me. So my connection in my house isn't too great due to interference. However, at work, it's amazing. I played a little bit of Resogun, and it was great. Of course I couldn't play too long because I'm at work. LOL :).

so remote play works at my secondary job location. I won't know if it works back at my main office until tomorrow, so I don't know if it is network related yet, or if I had to add in the port forwarding rules to get it going. I will update tomorrow once I know. If it doesn't work in my main office, I have full access to that router to reconfigure the network environment there.

I was pretty shocked it worked at all here, given how bad wifi is in this building. Resogun played passably until the particle effects started flying. Resogun isn't exactly the most compression friendly thing in the world.

I am optimistic for how it will function back in my main office, which has a fairly high speed connection that is only for the use of our small department.

Very frustrated. Remote play worked great direct to the PS4 the day I got the console. But yesterday and today, it barely wants to connect and it stutters quite frequently. Many times when I try to connect the Vita to the PS4, it tells me the connection speed is too slow. I've turned the power off, rebooted both Vita and PS4, and also relinked them using the code they give you. Hope I don't have a defective console. :(

Played an hour of Assassins Creed 4 on my Vita last night while my daughter watched Barney. Remote play is increasingly becoming my favorite next gen feature.

Did you try changing WiFi channels on your Vita?

Made some changes to my network
Disabled QoS
Gave PS4 Static IP (not only becaus some people say it I just don't like using dhcp on some devices)

Booted up and Remote play worked faster than before.

THEN

Tried it again and it was lagging horribly. I was playign resogun and was in a chat room dunno what was going on.

I also noticed I was trying to download Trine 2 Demo and it kept jacking my ps4 up it wouldn't download then it would try etc.

THEN

Woke up this morning and tried to remote play from my bedroom was like ok remote play boot up and all I kept hearing was a beep and a black screen. I almost broke out in tears thinking my PS4 died. Ran down stairs looke don PS4 Stupid Trine 2 demo was trying to download again and it has 99+ Notifications about it wth? Canceled the download and rebooted

I'll try agian at lunch but keep in mind I never open the ports for remote play so who knows how it will work while at work.

Oh and I didnt check the box that says connect to vita directly either

Try unchecking the direct connection option in the PS4.

Ok i have changed nothing, and now my remote play isn't working at my job.

Interesting, very interesting.

Edit: Ok weird. Did the same thing, remotely connected to my router, turned off and on the DMZ again, and it worked again. Very very funky.

Anyone been able to set this up for use over the internet using a Netgear WNDR3700? I've added the PS4 to the DMZ, forwarded ports, tried the uPNP route, just about everything that should make it work, but it's still not working from a remote location. Works great on my LAN, but as soon as I'm not either connected directly or through the router the PS4 is plugged into, it will no longer see the PS4.

Missing something?

Honestly, I think maybe the problems come from PSN and not from our routers or connections. I've done the same thing now, and now it won't connect anymore.

I'm not sure I should keep messing around till I find out if PSN is directly responsible for the issues I'm having.

Edit: Again, can't connect. No matter what I do to my home router. I'm beginning to think this is a problem with PSN and not me. Has anyone been able to consistently and reliably connect to remote play over internet every time?

My connection is very sporadic both with WiFi and direct connect.

I connect quickly, get into a game, and then the quality will go up and down for a few minutes before I get disconnected.

I tried inssider, set my router to the least used channel in my area, set the Vita to use the second least used channel for ad hoc, and it made no difference. Even when the quality was excellent there was still really bad input lag, even from 2 feet away from the PS4 and connected directly.

Really bummed about this.

Ok just tried at work and Boom everything works again. I don't know whats up with the whole Trine 2 Demo but w/e works great. Gonna open up those ports or make sure upnp is working correctly.

Vita remote play has me very optimistic about Gaikai streaming. I was able to remote play a game of FIFA via an ATT mifi. My PS4 is hardwired at home in Brooklyn and I was in the office in Manhattan. They game played really, really well with no noticeable lag. There were a few times when the connection speed dipped. But I just chalked that up to the fact that I was on a mifi. I can't imagine what this thing should be able to do with a proper wifi network.

Tried RP at work today and was able to connect for the first time, but the connection only lasted for a few seconds before disconnecting. Also, I turned on my PS4 before leaving, which was the only time I was able to get the PS4 screen on my Vita. Now that it has auto powered off, I can't eve connect to the PS4 screen.

I have gotten a message saying the Vita connection is too weak, so i want to try from another location to see if it can work.

Tried actually-remote remote play from work today. 50up/10ish down Comcast at home, fast-as-shit university network at work. Runs surprisingly well. Definitely more lag, but not absolute game-breaking (though it's far too much for shooters and the like). Visually it looks exactly as it does connecting directly to the PS4. Nice. Played some Ass Flag on lunch.

Side note: Why is it that Ass Flag has better RP/Vita controls than the first party games? Having buttons in the corners of the front touch screen is perfect, more games need to do that. It'd be cool if KZ Shadowfall had a Mercenary-style control layout for RP.

Just set up remote play last night! Wow this is incredible.. I've now seen the light.
Anyone knows of a good control layout for remote play FIFA14? That rear touchpad to run is horrible

This is extremely frustrating.

I wanted to go all retail and now this is making me want to go digital. Ughhhhh

I love it so much more than wiiu because all game support it and it's not limited distance like wiiu due to many options of connectivity with vita.

This and live on playstation are killer app if market correctly.

Decision decision , anyone change there mind to go digital after remote play success ?

Played from my office. Worked great. I now feel the need to go digital. Can't wait for the psn store to fill with great titles. This is too perfect.

I can't seem to get it to work for me. Am I missing a step, or is it because I'm not connected to WiFi on either device? I want to connect them locally (they're within f5 feet of each other, come on).

1. Go to PS4; "Add Device"
2. Open Remote Play app on Vita and enter the code
3. Asks for WiFi, but I can't connect to anything right now and just hit cancel.
4. Can't connect.

I thought it could connect locally? Or does it need WiFi the first time you use it?

I think it has to do with automatic profile login. Sometimes the DS4 turns off and when it comes back on it gives you a prompt to which profile you want for that controller. Most of the time I make sure to just turn the PS4 on and make sure it's sitting in the XMB/OS before manually putting it into stand by with the power button press.
