ERMYGERD!
The Netherlands.

Violence against gays and lesbians has nearly doubled in recent years. Interest group COC therefore wants Minister Ivo of Security is tackling aggression because of someone's sexual orientation in the coming years a priority for law enforcement. She hopes to make agreements today.

The number of incidents increased according to a report by the Verwey-Jonker Institute from 623 in 2011 to 1143 in 2012. Figures for 2013 have yet to be processed. "But this is a huge increase. We want the minister to take action, "says COC president Tanja Ineke out. She acknowledges that part of the increase is due to the extra attention to anti-gay violence in recent years.
It involves all kinds of aggression of cursing and spitting to beat up with enormous physical consequences.

Comes down to at least 3 acts of violence or aggression per day. I feel sick that this happens in my country.

"She acknowledges that part of the increase is due to the extra attention to anti-gay violence in recent years."

So does this mean it is reported more because of the extra attention or that it is becoming more "popular" because of this?

Had no clue there were that many cases of anti-gay violence here, I know there is plenty of intolerance though even when many people like to say how good we are with these issues.

More incidents might be reported now as well, or recorded as homophobic attacks rather than straightforward assaults. The fact that it's doubled is troubling in any case...

Just want to clarify a point, "acts of aggression" include reports of swearing or spitting at gay people. It's not all physical violence. But not everyone reports every incident either.

But this seems to be going on a for a little while already, sadly. From earlier this year:

http://nieuws.thepostonline.nl/2014/01/16/rapport-gemiddeld-drie-aangiftes-anti-homogeweld-per-week/

translated said:
most suspects of anti-gay violence are Dutch males between 19-25 years old. 86.6 percent already has a criminal record with an average of 7.8 recorded incidents.

Looks like the people doing this are young career criminals. Scum confirmed.

I always felt that as acceptance of sexual diversity increases, there would be a temporary uptick of phobic reactions in totally random places. No real rhyme or reason to it - just groups of insecure people suddenly freaking out as they see the society around them accepting "perversion".

Did "The Netherlands" not fit in the thread title?

because it's a thread and not a birthday present?

Really? That's the thing you want to talk about this threat? Not that in 2014 people still get harassed and assaulted because of their sexuality in a western civilization like The Netherlands, but rather about a stylistic choice made by OP regarding the thread-title?

REALLY?

This is a general trend that can be seen in any country that actually pays attention to the crime.

Confidence in the police in the LGBT community isn't exactly very high, for a huge amount of reasons. As you spend time and money in protecting people, you often get extra referrals either from people who didn't dare speak to the police before, or because they didn't realise it was a criminal act to verbally assault someone.

Even in liberal western democracies there's still a large amount of suspicion and distrust about the police forces. In people's lifetimes they were still running entrapment operations against gay men and busting down club doors.

What is there to talk about? The source (Telegraaf, lol) doesn't really tell how and why this happens. It doesn't even rule out violence that happened for other reasons, with the victim coincidentally being gay. Typical tabloid clickbait.

Never expected this sudden rise, being dutch myself.

I always felt like the Netherlands was somewhat ahead of the pack in terms of LGBT tolerance.
Sad.

There obviously isn't an actual rise. It's impossible for public opinion to change so radically that you're going to double the amount of violence. In reality they've either changed the tracking methods, or people are more confident reporting. Either way, it's a bullshit statement.

To be fair, I can't do anything about violence in the Netherlands, but I can express my irritation at the OP's stylistic choices and it might have some effect.

But to satisfy you: That sucks. People who attack people because of their sexuality are shitlords.
