Report: Apple to begin production of AR|VR headset in March 2023, announcement in April. 700k initial shipment, partnering with Megatron for assembly

A new report suggests that Apple may start producing its mixed-reality headset as early as March 2023 and that it could be officially announced the following month.

In May, it was reported that Apple had shown its upcoming mixed-reality headset to members of its board of directors.
Now, a report from DigiTimes spotted by MacRumors suggests that the device will enter production in the first quarter of 2023. The device could be unveiled as soon as April of the same year.
The first run is anticipated to be limited, with rough estimates at about 0.7 million units for the year. Allegedly, Pegatron will be the exclusive partner for the final assembly.

The production date falls in line with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's predicted timeline, who said that he believed Apple could introduce the device somewhere between January and the second quarter of 2023.
Kuo also believes that the headset will be capable of switching seamlessly between augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences.

Maybe the reason why Sony decided to release the PSVR2 in early 2023 was to beat Apple the whole time?

If the rumor is true, Apple will already start production and have 700,000 units ready with an official announcement in April or late March 2023.

I assume it will be costly but Apple will probably sell it with phone carriers like it does with their Tablets, Watches, and other gizmos, allowing for payment plans. If Ming Chi is right and you can switch between AR and VR it will be an entirely different beats, and if Apple can get it to within a reasonable price (no more than $1000) I can see consumers flocking to this as the new status symbol trend and the headsets will fly off the shelves, lapping Meta twice.

That Apple Logo is going to change everything even if the headset is sub-par. If true I expect from April announcement to end of the year to sell about 6-8 million headsets.

*Pegatron is the assembly partner.

Curious to see what kind of performance they get out of this with their custom silicon. You would expect this to have better specs than the pimax crystal but with a higher price cause apple.

Apple product with top of the line processor(s), RAM, storage, dual extremely high res OLED/MicroQLED displays, and oodles of cameras and LIDAR sensors "under $1000". LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, who wants to break it to OP? Perhaps he meant to say under $2500.

get ready for VR to become mainstream.

also get fucked facebook. even with oculus, zuck won't be able to compete with the sheer brand recognition of apple. both companies suck but apple is significantly better

Lol, ok. What's the definition of mainstream?
700k units is not much, doesn't imply a lot of confidence. That or it's too expensive.

Not interested till they get VR porn right. My first experience with it was very underwhelming:

1) All the women look 40ft tall. It's very intimidating.

2) With the headset on it's so easy to accidentally cum all over the wrong place cause you can't see shit. It's a fucking mess.

3) The type of porn I like (low quality shit) doesn't translate well to the high fidelity requirements needed to support VR.

I'm happy to wait till this is ironed out.

If you believe the rumors Apple has looked to buy their way into the gaming console market in a huge way

Apple is going to rape your ass with the price, best believe that.

My guess is Apple releases it with pretty high end specs and some new CPU, call it the V1, and charges $1800 for it. So people will go and compare it to the Meta Quest Pro and say, well, yea, it’s better so they can charge more.

The big problem for normie adoption of VR is that it is just an isolating experience. The fact is, a lot of people use Apple stuff because it’s a status symbol and conspicuous consumerism. Not quite as much as it used to be, but still. And standing at home waving around a wand is not conspicuous or sexy.

Even if they do I doubt gaming is their main focus/driver so I don’t think Sony have much to worry about.

If anything a product from Apple might increase demand for VR overall so it’s probably a good thing.

it will have the feature set from 5 years ago, cost twice as much as comparable headsets and will be severely limited in how you can use it...
in short, it will be an Apple product

this isn't going to be for playing games. you will be able to play games on it but it won't be the main focus.

to give you an idea of what this is...apple intend to replace iphones with this headset within 10 years of launch so 2033. they will probably market it as an iphone accessory but eventually they want it to be your main device.

they basically want to strap an iPhone to your face. there will be virtual reality and augmented reality. it will have high resolution full colour cameras for passthrough so you can walk around outside with it on.

it'll let you take photos of exactly what you see, do internet searches and see results in front of your eyes, if you need directions it will overlay them onto streets/buildings, if you get a video call you'll see that in your vision, if you get an email or message you'll see notifications.

think of an in game HUD but real life. mini maps, directions, calls, etc.

Never liked Apple and their products. iPhone, Mac etc just seems like overpriced, albeit slick, electronics that does nothing innovative but yet gets praised to kingdom come. Apple stuff also carries a sort of "smelling of your own farts" kinda odour over those who buys it.

We have already have these in our design team budget plan for next year (and Meta's Quest Pro on its way), lol. Looking forward to try them out.

Niantic is no doubt already deep in production on a version of Pokémon go for this thing.
They're definitely stupid enough to.

Imagine. An iGlasshole is walking around a park playing Pokémon GO. Not only will they walk into people and things even with AR, but the expensive gadget strapped to their head, with an Apple logo, that restricts their vision and awareness...

Can't imagine a more prime mugging target. You wouldn't need to even be subtle or fast.

Very interested to see how this pans out, but I can't see it being under £1k or less. Probably around £1500. It's going to be a premium experience for the first few gens.

You say this like People don’t walk around with eyes glued to $1000+ iPhones.

That worked well for Google. Apple got no developers.

Are you really trying to say order a Starbucks with a phone on your hand is the same having a VR headset strapped on your head?

Honestly i would lose to see that. Tgat would be a new but not surprising levels of ridiculous lol

when both are made by apple the difference doesn't matter. they could sell a giant unwieldly statue of the word "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and people would buy it in droves. they managed to get away with charging 800 dollars for a fucking watch dude.

I've learned from owning both a Rift and the Vive that the software needs to be there first. If there were more experiences like Half-Life: Alyx, it would be best case. I don't really trust the software to be in place for this launch but I will be waiting for the details.
