Report: Sony overhauling PlayStation Plus with new tiers and streaming

From Bloomberg,

The service, code-named Spartacus, will allow PlayStation owners to pay a monthly fee for access to a catalog of modern and classic games, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren't authorized to speak to the press about the plans. The offering will likely be available on the smash hit PlayStation 4, which has sold more than 116 million units, and its elusive successor, the PlayStation 5, which launched more than a year ago but is still difficult to buy due to supply chain issues.

Says they are combining the two into one service? I guess that works.

Plus offerings have been decent but nothing special for me. Now is not something I need or want since theres no PS5 games.

Drop PS1 games.
Drop PlayStation Now.

Profit.

It will be really interesting to see if Sony are agile enough to pull this off, especially with all the BC stuff, and things like fps boost etc. On xbox.

Okay gentlemen, now is the time to get screenshots from all the old Gamepass-related threads. Should be interesting how people's opinions magically change once it's no longer something that one side has and the other doesn't.

Looks like Microsoft was ahead of the game when they launched Xbox Game Pass 4 years ago and now the rest of the industry is going to be playing catch-up. Will be hard to match the built-in advantage that Microsoft has with XCloud, PC, the most expansive BC library, and the deepest pockets in the world to snatch up brand new games and developers.

When it launches, expected in the spring, the service will merge Sony's two existing subscription plans, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now. Currently, PlayStation Plus is required for most online multiplayer games and offers free monthly titles, while PlayStation Now allows users to stream or download older games. Documents reviewed by Bloomberg suggest that Sony plans to retain the PlayStation Plus branding but phase out PlayStation Now.

Sony has sure been following MS' trends lately. People criticized MS for putting games on PC, then sony does the same. Then Sony tries to avoid Cross-Play, but then does the same. Then people say GamePass isn't profitable/sustainable, then sony does the same thing lol.

Looks like MS' approach was right. Soon exclusives will matter less and less too.

This will be interesting, competition is always good.

Edit: after reading the article, sounds like they are just merging ps plus and psnow and calling it a new tier.

These subs are pretty useless unless they have regular new content.

I have a feeling it will just be a re jigging and rebranding of what they already have.

Sony should add new exclusives to a sub, the numbers dont lie, subs make more money then only a retail option.

Im more interested in the PS1/PS2/PSP games mentioned.
Dont think they will do day 1 releases of there big 1st party games. They are more successful doing what they have done these past 7 years. Its working great for them

Article states that there won't be new games added to this. No new releases means that this cannot be compared to gamepass.
Really sounds more like trying to roll now into plus as Plus has far more subs. Presenting it as an upgrade to plus vs a separate price and subscription is far easier to sell.

If this is cheap and focuses on older titles I would be interested... Though I don't know what would make this any different than what Now is currently. I wish Now bulked up it's back catalog with older and smaller games, but it is impossible to do that because if they announced old games were coming to it the monthly threads would be full of people bitching and whining.

This is combining services they already had since 2014 and prior, tho.

Read, people, read.

Still won't sub.

Hope they move basic online features to a free tier. Fuck everyone for charging for that.

Would be nice to see a family plan like Nintendo has as well.

Subs like this need new fresh content especially when the competition is doing it. If Sony won't support this with day 1 releases it's DOA. And to make it worse it will now be compared DIRECTLY to gamepass which wont be good.

Anyone that's actually played Gamepass probably knows its the future. Things change.

That said, I don't see any evidence yet that Sony is willing to take any cut to their finances, or that they have anywhere near the money MS does to spend on this kind of thing.

If nothing else, it's an easy way to play almost every major indie. Most of them probably get more money from the subs than sales; especially on PS which has had some declining indie sales compared to Switch in recent years.
