So here's the deal. I'm at my fiance's house and she has a 2000 iMac. I hate it. And it doesn't work properly. So I need to install FireFox and iTunes but it has MacOS 9 and both things need later OS. Retarded question warning: Does Apple dish out upgrades or do we have to buy or *cough* acquire later OS?
Any help appreciated loads.

You have to purchase Mac OS X. Panther should only cost about $100. Just make sure your system meets the requirements.

Hang out with Steve.
If you had an old DOS machine and needed to run Windows, you'd have to buy Windows.

If you had a Windows 95 machine and needed to run Windows XP, you'd have to buy Windows XP.

You have an old iMac that runs Mac OS9. You need to buy OSX.

If you had an old DOS machine it would be about 12 years old.
If you had Windows 95 it would be about 8 years old.

If you had a Windows machine that was only 4 years old? You wouldn't have to upgrade your OS to run anything. :)

Thanks guys!
Bah, pesky money! I spose my thinking was like, "Hmm, Apple make computer hardware really, just make OS to go on them so perhaps it'll be free..."
In the words of Dick Dastardly "Curses! Drat and double drat!"
Anyhoo, thanks again!

Shut it Doree.

You'd be better off 'borrowing' my copy of Panther. If she's bringing her Imac with her to England, I'll hook yous up.

That's what happens when you do a proper upgrade from a shitty OS to a good one. And much respect to Apple for having the guts to do it.

Incidentally, you might well have to 'upgrade' the OS on your Windows machine to run modern software. Plenty of stuff around that's XP only.
