I'll ask this again on a new page - how do you unlock the ability to use costumes? Do you have to beat all four campaigns? I beat the first three campaigns and I don't see any costume options.

You cannot use costumes in the campaign, only in mercs. They are locked behind ranks in mercs... you have to get a certain rank to unlock characters, and then a certain rank with each character to unlock alt outfits.

No costumes for campaigns. They're only available to use on Mercs.

Edit: Beaten like this game's review scores.

I am on the verge of tears right now. Capcpom pls

I see, so it's like unlocking characters in RE5 Mercs. Guess it's time I started playing that mode.

I make some dumb mistakes sometimes, but I am keen to help you. Have you finished the game?

I accidently spoiled someone when I went to choose
Carla
as a character.

His voice chat was like
Isn't that Ada Wong?

I haven't played the fourth campaign yet but I kinda figured that out from the constant costume changes lol. I'll probably try to finish that campaign first and then move onto Mercs. I'll add you on XBL once I get home, but I'll probably spend the next few days beating the fourth campaign.

The particular spoiler we're talking about - I wish there was a way to forget it. I remember reading it pre-release and then it coming true ;_;

Do we know any sales figures for this? I know re5 was one of capcoms biggest sellers, would like to see if this trend continues.

Talking to friends and work colleagues who I wouldn't say were re fans seem to have bought it, and the media coverage for the game is insane (even bad press is still press).

It was so obvious to figure it out from the game though. I never read the spoiler beforehand but it took me a grand total of five minutes to piece it together. It's like the exact same thing as the Jill twist in RE5, it wasn't hidden very well lol.

It's shipped 4.5 million, breaking Capcom's records. not sure about sales.

The Jill secret might as well have been trolling from Crapcom, they practically revealed it in a trailer. They really gotta tone it down with the mega spoiler filled trailers.

I penned that down to her being a Mexican Ada and thus it wouldn't matter. >_>

Ada was so fugly in Damnation. The artists on that film should be shot.

I won't watch ONE TRAILER for Resident Evil 7.

I said this about Resident Evil 6

It's not about whether one reviewer prefers one experience over another, it's just about how they rarely, if ever, dive into and compare/contrast mechanics in reviews. In my mind, you review a game vs. it's peers and discuss those mechanics in order to form a critical opinion, and also to inform the reader. That doesn't really happen and it's why you have every review contained in its own bubble and why RE6 is getting slammed for things upcoming games will be given a pass for. Hopefully there's just as big an outrage over THAT as there has been for the negative feedback over RE6.

RE6 problem was not the mechanics. FOV, Camera, AI, Poor level design, QTE's and many other factors just forced the reviewers to penalize the game. In fact for most of the reviewers these factors were prob so overwhelming that any redeeming quality RE6 may have had in terms of its mechanics was simply not enough to award the game any scores higher than what it currently has got. While I agree comparing mechanics between similar games is always a good practice and gives context to the reader sometimes being in the same genre is not enough to compare. I dont think it is possible to compare for eg a Vanquish and UC2 because while both may involve shooting they are poles apart. It would be easier to compare a Gears with Spec Ops in terms of mechanics then a vanquish. I also do not think any game which has the problems of RE6 will be getting a free pass.

Wish cvxfreak would post some updated impressions. Unless he's sticking to twitter. His impressions on the 8-4 podcast were after a rather short amount of time and I felt like most of his impressions could have changed as he played as the other characters and learned the combat better.

Oh well.

I can see the potential for quite a good game hidden under the game's problems.

RE6 needs a Director's Cut/Gold edition to iron out its rough edges.

Properly tutorialise the game's mechanics,
Pull back and improve the camera,
Improve enemy feedback,
Make edits to sections of the level design that lets the game down.
Etc.

Any tips? What to do when monsters just can't be found anywhere?

@guys equipping Medic (after) random Mercs teammates dying because of sucking.

Why bother? They are clearly just learning the ropes. Just jump to another match with some other random, no? They had their chance.

I have to agree with him. There are some bright spots, but they end up being too marred by issues and messy execution as you move forward. This killed it for me after I started Chris's campaign and I just lost interest. Still, some of the mechanics are neat and I did manage to have some fun in Leon's campaign. I would have to give it a 6.5 at most after nearly 20 hours with it.

Just finished chris campaign. I'm a bit confused about how so many people struggled with it and why so many people hate it. The ending was slightly unexpected. Although capcom really doesn't understand how electricity works in water.

Is there a good guide/video out there that helps teach the game's mechanics?

Also totally subjective, but would people recommend tackling an entire campaign one at a time, or doing them in the chronological order in the OP.

That is the challenge... it's a balancing act of staying close enough to your partner for backup and far enough that you can both seek out a monster when they are spread out. We had a couple close calls. I killed one around 96 that was right at the last second.

One thing I do if things seem to be thinning is keep a shuffler alive that's close to me (as long as they aren't spitters they present very little risk) while looking for groups farther away. If things get dicey I just pump half a clip into it, buy myself some more time.

Do not get too focused on mini bosses... do some damage to them but mix in the easy zed kills to keep the combo going.

Do not get locked into a long melee sequence when combo time is in danger. Especially chasing them down with two-three melee hits... just be smart and let it go, if it's not fast, just pump some bullets into them, and move on to your next combo kill.

Get time and herbs early, and have your partner do this as well, right at the start before you kill anything, get all the time. You can have 7+ mins on the clock in 30 seconds if you work together.

Know where to pick up first aid sprays. They are pretty important if you get caught in a nasty loop of taking damage (damn magnum enemies) and they are a fast way to fully heal both players.

Learn to counter the bloodshots. It's easy, an instant kill, and nets you ten seconds each.

Learn to time/counter melee weapon enemies. Don't wait around for the counter, but you can get a feel for timing your approach with their attack pattern. Again, this is instakill (usually) and 10+ seconds. If the timing is off and it seems like you'll have to wait too long, quick shot into melee is a good option: instakill and 5+ second.

As far as high scoring... I think this really comes down to limit breaker and, just as, if not more important: managing the combo bonuses. You need to know where both are, and when/how to use them. We weren't great in this area, and is certainly the difference why we were 3000's on the leaderboards instead of 300's.

Good luck.

edit: Hey and if your partner has a mic, it's really helpful to let the other player know if you're getting in combo trouble. If they have a bunch around them, there's no reason for you to be in panic mode. And vice versa. If you're both in trouble... run in opposite directions and get ready to pump bullets into something (with reckless abandon) probably at range.

Is it any surprise that most of GAF doesn't enjoy reading?

Okay well before you make generalized statements, maybe get off your high horse? Who said I don't enjoy reading because I don't want to read a giant essay on why some dude doesnt like a video game at this very moment?

Fuck off.

On topic, I played my first Merc match solo. I sucked. Time to practice and get good before I embarrass myself online.

This game is like a rorschach test, everyone is getting something completely different from the campaigns. I finally got to Chris' campaign yesterday (chap 4 atm) and I'm loving it. It's not as good as Leon's but better than Jake's for sure. I was worried due to some folks really hating it.. but it's pretty fun. Biggest frustration has been the PS3 matchmaking servers being all borked over the weekend and have been unable to get someone to join in as Piers. The partner AI is seriously brain dead.

Oh he wrote a thesis. Guess I'll read it sometime, maybe.

You can get the gist of it on the first part. Indeed, it is very long and I actually don't expect many people to read it all the way, but if anyone out there cares enough...

I'm more interested in the debate that may come out of it, if anything.

Oh I'll definitely check it out. I understand why you'd write so much considering it's your favorite (?) series. You must be quite upset though. Here's hoping RE7 is better.

Less upset and more disappointed in the end. Some of the additions to the game were inevitable after RE5's reception.

It's the stuff they added that people weren't asking for that really disappointed me the most.
Who the hell asked for more QTEs and vehicle sequences?!

Still, like I say in the critique, the game's not boring and I did get enough entertainment out of it, but it will never feel like an RE that I can say is my favorite -- and I like every mainline RE game in its own way that it's often hard to pick favorites.

I played it chronologically and I highly recommend that approach. The game feels much more cohesive and the story builds up at a good pace, so that when shit finally hits the fan, you're dealing with it from three very different perspectives.

On another note I really like the attention to detail in this game. Did anyone notice in Leon Chapter 4
when they were on the plane, at the very beginning of the cutscene you can see a small TV on the plane that has a news report where Chris is pushing away the camera, which is the scene you play through in Chris' first chapter.
It's stuff like that that I really appreciate in this game.

The gameplay styles and tone may be different, but the goal of every single shooter should be providing fun and satisfying combat. For 1:1 comparisons, sure you look for games that are more directly comparable, but when looking for mechanics that objectively WORK vs. those that feel/look/sound bad, or are outright broken, a Vanquish vs. Uncharted argument can still be useful. Gunplay, pacing, fluidity of controls, encounter design, set piece design, sound design, etc. etc. are all open for discussion across every shooter. Even something like the style of narrative and its effectiveness vs. another shooter's can work.

I did a video on this game, which, I dunno, you guys might be interested in.

Resident Evil 6: Absolutely Ridiculous

There's a reason I'm subscribed to you - I pretty much agree with everything you say, from why Talbot was a badly fleshed-out character to this review of RE6. This game is so bombastically crazy it's lovable. It's just like you said: RE6 has no sense of restraint, which is why it can get away with throwing you into some of the craziest, funnest set pieces out there.

I didn't say it but I was specifically referring to the final boss of chris campaign. I didn't find it that difficult, frustrating or bad. I thought it was how a final boss should be. For me there's one chapter in each campaign that I dislike and won't replay but its been pretty enjoyable otherwise. As for the ai, I haven't had too many issues with it. I'm a dick and will abandon the ai who is distracting all of the enemies so I can progress further or stock up in ammo/health.

Yeah. Did you also notice in Leon II
that you see a news report about a submarine sinking in waters somewhere. It's the same submarine that Ada sunk in her first chapter
