Initially, I was skeptical about RE7 because I feared that the final game would lack things like combat and resource management, things that I believe are essential to any Resident Evil experience. Those fears have been to laid to rest now by Capcom, thankfully, but I'm still not convinced yet. My biggest problem with the game (at least as it's being presented now), is a complete change in tone, and a lack of classic RE charm and personality. Going back all the way to the very first game, the series has always been goofy and cheesy, as much as it's been tense, or scary. Lines like "Jill Sandwich" and "Master of Unlocking", or all the goofy costumes and weapons you could unlock... it was always as fun as it was scary, y'know?
RE7 though, so far, is pure, unadulterated horror. It's 100% serious, and it's intended to be terrifying all the time. Capcom seems to have brought back horror to the series, but the fun of the series has been left behind in it's wake, or so it seems so far. The tone of the game just doesn't feel like RE to me, and I do believe the tone of a game is very important. Is anyone else as disappointed with the drastic change in tone as I am?
