Resident Evil 7 biohazard - "Lantern" Gameplay Trailer

No you wouldn't.

Claire wouldn't be shitting TMP bullets, roundhouse kicking 20 zombies in a fast paced arena fight and then fraternising with a gun merchant.

The camera has nothing to do with it.

I mean, if Leon had Claire's crazy knife RE4'd play exactly like the combat in CV: you just aim down and swing until the enemy's dead.

On a more serious note, Code Veronica might not be the best example. RE3 with its crazy command dodge is already literally an action game.

Where do you think you're going, son?

It looks pretty cool and would make one hell of a demo but it really annoys me that as far as we know this is still RE in name only.

I was at first pessimistic, then I made a few realisations about the demo which made me optimistic. This trailer has made me cautiously optimistic, I'm rather concerned with the hide & seek gameplay demonstrated here... that shit was good back in 2010 when Amnesia was a thing, but now it's been done to death and I find that shit boring now.

Also, lol at people thinking this isn't a Resident Evil game, it's more like a RE game than 4 was.

Didn't like what I saw of RE7 from Beginning Hour, and this hasn't changed my perception. Most worrying is that they titled it a "gameplay" trailer. Yes, I know it's just another piece of found-footage that's largely for exposition & not part of the "main" game, but that doesn't make it any less unappealing.

The camera has everything to do with it. Once you put it behind the shoulder, now you can target individual limbs which leads to all sorts of possibilities in design. CV was following up on RE2 and RE3 which were already trending the series towards more action oriented gameplay. How many big bads do you take down in CV anyway? The Bandersnatch is treated like a regular enemy a quarter of the way through and that dude is huge. Actually, now that I think about it, CV had an FP view that was canned because the Dreamcast couldn't handle it. Clair would be holding up the two machine guns.

Which CV isn't designed for...

If you modded CV and put the camera behind Claire and gave her free aim, it would be exactly the same game. The keys would all unlock in the same order in the same locked-in locations, the enemies would have the same motion and attack ranges, the item management would be the same albeit easier due to head targeting, and more to the point the pacing would be identical. Added to which, no gun buying or upgrading, no grid inventory, no free saving, far more emphasis on backtracking, no QTEs etc...

You can't just put a free aim camera in the game and have it magically alter the other 95% of it.

Not to mention the explosive barrels everywhere and the high amount of ammo the game throws at you.

RE3 is really good but it's easily more action focused than 1 and 2.

I'm liking what I'm seeing. I have a feeling we'll be pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't have minded a safe bet and making it like the old RE games for the first current gen one, but this has been fine so far.

yeah this seems vr limited gameplay....

It's a proper sequel to 6 and they said we'll slowly learn how it connects to the series. It's nice for once that they're not telling us everything.

So much negativity and "NOT MY RE" in this thread. Good god, such a fickle bunch people in this fandom.

Wait for a game play trailer before shit posting goddamn.

UK got a demo with a Nintendo (if I remember correctly) Magazine a few months before the game released. Had the village opening on and everyone collectively lost their minds

I remember watching the village demo over and over because I had no GameCube. I was probably too young to care about the series, but I thought it looked amazing back then.

There was some of this but RE4 was just such an awesome game regardless that few gave a shit. I was bummed with it from a lore perspective but thought it was a good game period.

I was mainly asking about the community reaction due to how people here are deeming this garbage without actually seeing any gameplay. Would be nice if people would make judgments after seeing how it actually plays (if Capcom releases a gameplay trailer).

Personally just based off the demo and this trailer, it looks very boring and not scary. And as said many times doesn't seem related to the RE7 IP at all, at least yet.

edit: Just seeing now this isnt actually "gameplay". Even though the thread is labeled as such. Hopefully actual gameplay will be more promising.

Thread title says "Gameplay trailer", though, so you cant really fault anyone.

The more I look at this, the more it reminds me of Demento/Haunting Ground (Capcom PS2 game) but in first person and without the dog.

What engine is this running on? Anyone know? Is Capcom finally using Panta Rhei for something or did they just go back to Framework MT?

New engine they're just calling "RE Engine." I don't think there's been any indication if it's based off either of the other two.

EDIT:
Well, RE2 started the habit of increasing ammo and individual spawns while decreasing enemy health. I always felt like you ended up with enough ammo to kill every single enemy in the game.

RE3 is more ridiculous of course. It even introduced the Mercenaries! I don't see how you can say it's not an action game when it literally started that trend.
I think that started with RE2 Dual Shock edition's EX Battle Mode RE1's Saturn-port Battle Mode.

I... totally forgot the RE1 battle mode was a thing. I didn't think the RE2 version felt nearly as action-y as the Mercs did though. It was still relatively objective based while the Mercenaries is about maximizing your time bonus. Didn't you even get to save once?

Keep in mind that we've haven't seen anything from the "main game" yet, just the tape from the demo and this tape from the game. I'm sure it's been discussed already. These are peaking my interest for the reveal of the story and main/secondary characters.

Context is very important. How do we know this old lady with the lantern is a normal human? We don't. For all we know, long, spikey tentacles could bust out of her chest and decapitate your character in the blink of an eye. Or maybe she vomits toxic chemicals that can melt human flesh down to the bone. We just don't know.

That's a lot of maybe's. It's up to Capcom to present the context, and with what I've played and seen, all I've got to go on is an old man punching me in the face, mannequins, and an old lady walking around with a lantern. Why resort to the physicality of punching or stalking if they were capable of that? They should demonstrate something that sets apart these enemies from previous ones.

This ain't RE

Okay I got some questions

A) Why isnt she running from the old witch?
B) why is Mia not trying to block the door ways with large rectangular box that seem abundant in that small shed? Like the witch was walking for gods sake at a slow pace. She had so many opportunities to do so.

I'm holding out hope.

Wait for a game play trailer

We've had a reveal trailer with real time gameplay, a public demo of gameplay, and now another gameplay trailer. All with no combat.

I'm aware combat may be in this game, but Capcom is only delivering on the Amnesia/PT vibes after 3 trailers. A gameplay style made up of twitch streamer bait that's already completely stale for me.

They only had to change the audio for that jump scare to be more effective.

Make the audio sooner/louder and don't have the voice sound like someone's grandma talking through a sock.

Boom, you got an ebaumworld's quality jump scare.

This is labeled as a gameplay trailer. If theres more to the game then I'll comment on that when I see it but as of now I'm not impressed with what I've seen and played.

I am sorry but to me this is not resident evil just another 100000 amnesia clone out on steam right now,

I was thinking this as well, but I am sure the main game will be closer to the normal RE games. Even if it's not, for the last few years I have been moaning about how bad RE6 is and how incredible Alien Isolation is, I have made my bed and I will proudly lie in it.

I'm not sure why a lot of you guys are taking Capcom's comments about the gameplay being different from footage we've had so far at face value. Most of the time, what you see is what you get. And I doubt it'll defer too much from what was shown.

Fair point, but this is a VHS tape segment and not the actual main character, so it remains to be seen.

And a fact sheet that doesn't even bother to mention combat as a feature.

I'm sure Capcom isn't lying when they say combat is in RE7 in some form, but if hiding/running from enemies isn't the main way you'll interact with them, it's on them to show that.

Soo is there any action? Or any of the charm that made RE well...RE?

You cant just have a fps horror game and call it RE because its not.

In this case, they should tell alot to reassure fans of RE that this is RE and not some cash in on the PT,Amnesia,Outlast,Alien Isolation crowd

I was into it until the hiding part. Fuck that. There's nothing scary about ducking behind a box while the dumbass monster waste your time.

I kind of agree with this, especially as it appears so scripted.

I'm incredibly open minded when it comes to genres and styles of gameplay but I don't really think what was in this trailer was simply very good. I'm onboard with first person RE (I like Survivor and the Chronicles games aren't bad) but I hope there aren't too many moments like this where you're just sitting around waiting for something to eventually grab you.

They should go for what it is they're going for without fan pandering. If they did this they would be accused of being too "safe" in the current climate. Either they do something different which makes fans uneasy leading to bitching or do something too familiar which also leads to bitching. There is no happy medium with fans.

I say they follow their feelings and let people deal with it in the long run how they see fit. They're not obligated to anything specifically and if people want to immediately write it off regardless of how it turns out that is their prerogative.

With Street Fighter and now Resident Evil, I wonder if Capcom will kill two of their three biggest IP in under a year. Maybe by the end of 2017, they'll have added Monster Hunter to the pile!

I'm joking and this won't actually happen! I hope

If anything bothers me it's that this is called Resident Evil 7 and not Resident Evil: Beginnings or something else to indicate a departure from the past few titles.

I'd much rather have the latter title. Resident Evil 7 is coming off of 6, which is a very poorly received Resident Evil game. Might as well suggest a reimagining by removing the number.

Yeah, unless they bring in more of the traditional Resi elements and show that we will definitely be able to fight our way out of tight spots, I'm probably going to skip this one. I hate horror that forces you to be totally helpless and have to just always hide from things.

Honestly though, if the series carries on with these full horror titles being the mainline entries (assuming sales success), REmake 2 and eventually 3 offering original fixed camera Survival Horror, and Revelations 3 and on more refined co-op Action Horror, I'd be happy, even if only 2 out of 3 are to my tastes.

If they announced multiple games they would be fine.

RE7 This
RE2Make Classic
RE whatever, action player focus like 4-6

When you cater to the fragmented fan base you made that's how you please everyone for the most part.

I have faith in the team behind this to make a much more enjoyable game than Amnesia but that trailer wasn't very interesting.
