Hahahahahahahahah, holy shit, this thread. I just now got all caught up on it and it's one of the best GAF threads in a long time. Good work to all involved!

Great thread for a couple reasons:

1) Always a good time to see another Doom Bringer meltdown

2) Resistance looks awesome in motion. Since Crackdown seems to be 2007 now, Resistance takes its place as 2006 GOTY.

Wow, I'm suprised how smooth the game is running. Even in the more intense scenes there wasn't or barely any slowdown. For a first generation PS3 game, this is really impressive.

I think the vid, like the screens posted earlier, were before they put in the lighting and other visual polish.

I think you are wrong thinking the game will look drastically better.
It's more about polish and the whole game coming together that makes Insomniac giddy atm I believe.

Yes, because Halo invented melee attacks and hordes of enemies.

Oh wait - it didn't. :lol

You can't see the blatant similarities in execution, you're blind! :lol

^^ I wrote in bold and had a lol emoticon, does that mean I'm winning now?

Damn, remind me to hate on a game when a bunch of enemies rush you in a hallway.

Every FPS has similarities with previous ones.

It's not what I think personally.

These screens were taken before a lot of the recent polishing has gone into the game.

In another thread I said lighting has been going in. This is one of the last things to go into some of these levels. This lighting is essentially another coating of polish that really just gives some areas a completely different feel. Some seem to be taking that comment a bit out of context (NeoGAF etc.). The overall point is that we're in the polishing phase now, and the game is continuing to look better and better and some levels have made huge jumps over the past month.

Doom_Bringer is a god amongst men. His meltdown is the best thing that happened to this forum since BELIEVE.

Who's hating? This thread made me go from not caring to being genuinely day-one interested. But come on, saying this game takes no inspiration from Halo? Seems a stretch.

Halo took inspiration from Aliens, too.

If they manage to get MGS4 out in 07 it will be a incredible feat. Not relating to engine(as I'm sure they will have something perfectly godly smooth before the end of this year) but in terms of features. Not only will they have all of those crazy new stuff stuff you can do and so on, it will also ship with a full online mode. I wouldn't be surprised if it slipped to 2008.
Hey, Kojima is vaguely aiming for July 07, I think the game must be further along than you think. I can see it slipping to late 07 though, quite easily.

When I think about Kojima wanting all languages on one disc though, that could cause a delay.

What is with GAF. Why do developers lurk this place so much? Why is it so captivating to them?

Anyways this is all really good to hear.

Outside of you, GAF is nothing but developer aliases. We like to argue about Japanese sales charts in between crunch sessions.

I'm Alex Seropian of Bungie Studios, creator of the melee attack and little crawly-alien swarm.

I'm drunk and inventing the Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator/Gravity Gun right now; to be honest I'm not really sure where I am at the moment.

uhm.. that video is in crap quality.. to be expected from kotaku and they even put it on youtube for it to become even crappier..

Oh nice. Going by that video it looks like they fixed the weapon position moving it closer to the center of the screen.

What he said. God, I can't believe I almost missed out on this thread. :lol

i dont know if you can tell just by looking at those two gun positions. they might be slightly different due to the gun-bobbing motion, for all we know!

pretty sure it's the same, the camera zoomed in on the screen.

Watch the videos. They are clearly in a different position while standing still.

Perspective is different.

You know, back when they first announced Duke Nukem Forever, I kinda figured this is what it'd look like on next-gen systems. The aliens look similar to me

Too bad we'll never get to find out. =/

hey the aliens do look like a rip off of duke nukem. Never noticed that before

I don't think so. They look like an evolution of the first chimera (which I liked much better)

Surely all the current one's have to do is open their mouth to look exactly like that.

No, the new ones look a little different. There was a rumor that both types of shimera shown so far will be in the game along with a few others.

Is this old?

MTV has posted a report from the same demonstration that video seems to come from.

It was a 50-minute long demo. There's some interesting info in there. Including how much disc space it currently takes up :p

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1539078/20060821/index.jhtml?headlines=true

But first, the story: This first-person shooter from the makers of "Ratchet and Clank" would chronicle four days in July 1951 across an England scarred by a war against the several-eyed humanoid aliens called the Chimera.

In the opening level, the hero Hale held a basic rifle and Schneider offered a next-gen tease: "We are going to be supporting the tilt functionality of the PlayStation 3 controller," he said. "You're going to be able to shake off melee advances, and you'll be able to counter-strike with a rifle butt. And we're looking at other tricks as well."

The jolt with the rifle butt — holding the controller with two hands and jabbing forward with the right — was animated into the game but triggered, for now, just with a press of the button. Players will have a choice of button press or flick to make it happen in the finished game.

Schneider offered some distinguishing stats. Thanks to high-res graphics and orchestral music, the game, he said, currently takes up 22 Gigabytes of memory on a Blu-Ray disc

More numbers: 40-player online matches at launch; 60 levels of player progression while playing online; two-player offline co-op. Phillips promised better, deeper support than any Xbox Live title.

Some more on one of the weapons:

He and Phillips did a developer cheat, nearly freezing the game world as they had Hale launch a bomb called the "hedgehog" — which is like a sea urchin — radiating 50 spikes. With the game slowed and the hedgehog gliding through the battlefield, Schneider talked about each of the 50 connected spikes probing the game world with their own artificial intelligence, assessing where they're about to make contact with the game's environment, when to ricochet and where to go. He pointed to enemies reacting with smooth, retreating animations. He noted the metal-on-metal ping as the hedgehog hit steel and said a different sound would have triggered if it tapped wood. He showed how the hedgehog figured out when to suddenly extend its spikes into a waist-high obstacle and erupt toward nearby enemies.

There's more at the link!

At least, it's nice to know that right out of the boat these games are taking up way more than a DVD9 can handle

Also...

The jolt with the rifle butt — holding the controller with two hands and jabbing forward with the right — was animated into the game but triggered, for now, just with a press of the button. Players will have a choice of button press or flick to make it happen in the finished game.

Is great! I love choice, give me the option to turn this shit off devs!
