Whoa whoa wait. I was told by a crap load of people that doing this would actually cost companies more money? Was I decieved by the PS3 downplayers?!
It would front-load the costs of recording and localization. Nowadays a game gets a chance to recoup some money bofire the publisher localizes it. It will save money though on duplication and distribution but not so much on packaging because of all the country-specific regulatory codes and manual disclaimers.

If MTV gets to cover it, and KOTAKU got footage, how come sites like IGN, Gamespot and 1UP have yet to have anything on that showing?:)

There IS compression. There has to be. Let's say 3:1 compression on textures (totally random). If you need 60MB of textures in a level/scene, it will take 3x longer to load that texture into memory before it's worked on. I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt they're going with little compression.

AFAIK, game data is streamed off the disc (BR or HDD) into memory first, THEN the CPU/GPU grabs data and operates on it. To minimize the memory footprint, YOU HAVE TO USE COMPRESSION. BR won't make 512Mb magically more. So if there's 21GB of data there, you can expect that it's either laregely redundant data, or *gasp* Insomniac went sickhouse on the large pool of space they now have.

I wasn't aware that art creation was the only cost involved, but also optimization. Maybe BR means they have to optimize less to keep texture sizes down. And with the HDD offering a dynamic(?) swap file, you can no doubt stream data from both drives at once. Maybe BR filliing the swap file seamlessly while the HDD pushes data out to main memory. L1/LS -> L2 -> XDR/GDDR3 -> HDD -> BR? Random thoughts. Props to guys like Cliffy who have to read this drivel and restrain themselves from bitchslapping everyone spewing nonsense. PEACE.

Yep I agree about the compression.

While the music and vocals in "Resistance" take up only about 1 Gigabyte of disc space, graphics, level data and programming code occupy most of the remaining 21.

I wonder what they are using it for. They have never implied the game to be anything but in the normal length in regards to the campaign(of course, if only game length determined that size they must have been developing it for ten years :p).

edit: *Reads up on speculation.* I see.

WHOA!!! Pimpwerx coming in with the knowledge.

Sony set up us the bomb?
:P

I just read most of this thread, and wow.
From resistance, to sparks, to hentai, to lord knows what else, and now to data sizes. Definetly TotM

I'd say with the data... There has to be *some* compression due to the amount of RAM the console has. Regardless of how fast the processor is or if its caching on the HDD, the RAM size and speed will still limit texture sizes. Me and my friend talked about this at work the other day.

With that said, I think they either have an incredibly large amount of redundant data (the game x2?), or needless filler junk to hype up us hardcore gamers.

And the (photoshopped) sparks look great ;P

Damn, I really want to say that looks damned good, but I have to wait for the GAF concensus lest I look like a fool.

If those models end up looking that good ingame when it ships, then hot damn

they've got a ways to go.

That's easily the most jarring thing about this games graphics. Ted price keeps emphasizing how they have normal maps on everything and for the most part the characters look like medium range poly characters with flat high-res textures applied.

The characters models in the shot above actually look normal mapped, but the ingame stuff just looks flat and featureless. Turn on the normal maps Ted!

You're comparing a model from a newer build to the E3 build.

How about comparing these two
rst08.jpg

rst01.jpg

They look identical, except the one on top has his eyes open.

those two leapers look the exact same to me. put them in the same lighting, close the top one's mouth and I bet they would look the same.

Factor in the game has been getting polishing lately, better lighting, etc. And I could easily see them being the same.

And better lighting, but that would make since according to the recent dev reports.

those do look pretty damned similar. I just took the shots from the e-mpires thread that was linked. since the pics were posted together i assumed they were from the same build.

i stand by supposedly normal mapped but sure doesn't look it comments though.

So weird seeing that big alien apparatus mix in with old wooden fence, brick house..etc. So awesome. And it looks like it's a winter night as you can see snow coming down.

Well, that really looks like a case of needing more specular highlights than just straight up normal maps.

Wow, I didnt even notice that...I thought it was just on a spaceship or something
Awesome

I have always wondered how those leapers are able to climb upside down on that brick wall. No apparant hooks or spikes, not to mention that they seem pretty heavy.

so the bullets that go around corners and hover in mid air to from grenade clusters and the gun that shoots through walls and gets stronger as it goes didn't quite stir your sense of wonder, but these minature crabs on the ceiling do?

It looks like 4xAA to me.

I love how the Chimera looks "solid" and "whole" and its skin has that sheen of skin that isn't just "shiny" like so many other models. It looks alot better than the models we've seen in the older shots simply because of that. With it looking more realistic and whole the design doesn't even bother me as much because it just look "organic."

Oh, and they forgot to polygonize those tubes behind the chimera - I call CG. :D

Dude, what the hell happened to you? You used to just innocently post topics (albeit not good ones sometimes). But at least you didn't push your now unveiled fanboyism.
