What Damage Can Be Caused?
Prolonged use of components outside of their specified tolerances inevitably leads to failure. On the console side, the stress is excessive current output on digital outputs when driving a logic high. On the cartridge side, the stress is excessive heat dissipation due to conduction of the clamping diodes. I have already heard from several friends that their NES consoles have died most likely due to their admittedly heavy use of cheap multicarts. These are particularly bad. I would avoid these like the plague. I suspect poorly designed Everdrives will require more time before we start seeing failures.
A buddy had his MVS mobo destroyed by a 161 in 1 cart which went pop and took the hardware out with it. Then I found the youtube videos which are linked in that article which confirmed it was the lack of proper components on the cart that caused the fault. Always tell people to stear clear of them if the subject pops up as a result.
Was looking to grab a Super Everdrive so nice to know I should avoid, thanks for posting.

Shouldn't have been so cheap with the SED.Go with the SD2SNES instead (also sold by Krikzz and Stone Age Gamer) Rene says its a fantastic design.

I thought this would be an interesting post for here. Rene from dbElectronics put up his blog post about the issues with running 3,3v flash media on a 5v device with out the proper electronics in place to handle it, he also talks about which devices have proper designs and what doesn't.

Here's just the introduction to give people some info.

Welp... I'm done. Never using my 161 in 1 cart again after reading this.
Well, as I said, day drinking is what inspires me to make new threads. I think I have a problem. This time, I made a thread about arcade game/PCB stuff: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=242680608#post242680608
I'm sure it's riddled with misinformation and things that probably should've been covered that weren't, but... that's the point of a forum -- everyone else gets to fix it. Plz don't let the thread die immediately
Irish, can you add it to the list of RetroGAF threads in the OP?
i was just going to text you to take a look at this post. lol
That OP kicks ass. Nicely done man.
An article looking at GB/C/A and DS flashcarts might be nice, there's quite a selection in those spaces these days.

Sure, but understanding these others aspects of the electronics might demonstrate a different reason to upgrade to krikzz new device, or a reason to avoid it. More information is always a plus.Well, Krikzz has a new one that uses PSRAM for GB/GBC coming soon.
Thanks, brah.
Very nice, could I also recommend the below forums as pretty invaluable sources for both the trade sections and as a repository of knowledge.

Lastly shmupmame has been made obsolete by groovymame which manages to remove even more frames of input lag whilst removing all the hacks shmupmame used. Being picky I know....

He went into this on the last Retro Roundtable. Glad he put up a blog post also. Thanks.I thought this would be an interesting post for here. It feels like that's what I paid for it. I'm glad I did now.SD2SNES
Verdict = Pure Gold!
DS and 3DS are 3.3v so should be fine from this problem. An article looking at GB/C/A and DS flashcarts might be nice, there's quite a selection in those spaces these days.
Aren't there still quirks about power draw and similar? I can't imagine those things are good for the system being used, but maybe I'm misunderstanding which particular issues cause longevity problems.DS abd 3DS are 3.3v so should be fine from this problem.
I didn't realize the 161-in-1 also had worse audio quality. I mean, it never interested me, but that's ghetto. I would've thought it'd just work properly.
At least I got my PS2 reading games off an SD card today! Hopefully that won't cause any issues, but the PS2 is a launch model with an absolutely destroyed laser, so I'm not TOO worried if it finally dies.
Must... Replace... Disc drives... in ALL systems...

i can't see the photo on my laptop, (it might be just my computer,) but is the link broken?Slept on the 8-bit Final game because I was really moving locations during the release. Tacked it onto the new SFC game. I totally dig these releases.

i got Super Metroid in the mail today and picked up this neat controller/game while grabbing dinner:
i used to suck at it in the arcade.

After A decade of using Photobucket I am trying to figure out a different hoster...but not the most savvy with computers ;(
HD Retrovision component cables for SNES/Genesis are still in stock, btw.
They're on Wave 2 right now.

Messaged the link to a friend of mine last night, as soon as I read the article... He replied something like 'ahhh, maybe that's why my console started to act funny and needed carts to be insterted multiple times, in order for it to read them properly'. Only, he uses an AES console + MVS adapter of sort.My friends MVS board stopped working not long ago and he's got one of the multi-carts wonder if that's what killed it now.

I'm not an NG person, so I have no idea how things work on that system, but... Any chance the 161-in-1 may have only busted the adapter and not the console? Not that it would make any sense, by logic. Just to give him hope his AES isn't gonna die.
Edit - Any idea if things like the PowerBase Mini FM could be potentially a danger as well? I was going to buy one, but now this whole thing got me a bit more wary...

In regards to the MVS to AES converter I don't know. I have one myself (though never used a 161 in 1 or any other multicart in it) that just last year or so started giving me problems that so far no one has been able to figure out what's causing them or how to fix them. Though I would think the carts needing to be inserted multiple times is probably either a sign of dirty contacts, or just worn down contacts. I know replacing the cartridge connectors is something done on AES', as mine had brand new ones put in just before I bought it from the person I did. You should suggest to him that he try and clean the contacts with some high percentage rubbing alcohol, and if that doesn't help maybe some deoxit.
In regards to the PowerBase Mini FM, that's actually made by the guy who wrote this article so I wouldn't worry about it. Plus that's not using flash memory. See the problem here is the use of 3.3v flash memory on data lines for systems that run at 5vs with out proper transitioning of the voltage happening.
Great stuff as always... And I'm still annoyed we didn't get that sweet special edition for Project X Zone.i can't see the photo on my laptop, (it might be just my computer,) but is the link broken?

Super Metroid is one of those games that needs to be brought to each generation. It should be required gaming, a fine example of pretty much everything done right.

It's my favorite SNES game but I'm not gonna fault any new gamers for finding it too archaic mechanically. Stuff like edge grabbing and easier walljumps in MF and M;ZM prolly make those games more accommodating to newcomers.
Did you know about that stereo accessory thing that plugs into the 15-pin famicom connector port on the side?
The biggest problem with Super Metroid is that it wasn't a Genesis game. It could use a bit of blast processing.
