The inside of my Sega CD looks different from other pictures for some reason.


I looked at videos and and pictures and unless its inside this FL301 box I don't know where it's inside this thing is.

Every guide says look for the F301. It should be a green fuse

It looks like the fuse might be on the bottom. It also looks like it will be a lot more difficult to remove.

You should probably listen to this. There's a reason the fuse exists. But if you're lazy, it's an option. Note, I would never bypass a fuse on my own system (and I didn't when I went through the same issue).

My original plan for the weekend was to just replace the hard drive in my original Xbox with a 250 gig one and rip my games to it. Unfortunately the clock capacitor started had started to leak and the board needed to be cleaned. Thankfully it hadn't corroded or eaten away at anything and some good cleaning with vinegar and a toothbrush left me a motherboard that looked brand new. Capacitor has been removed too (everyone should do this to their OG Xbox, every single one of these capacitors MS put in them is leaking and can kill your board). I had meant to do it years ago and just completely forgot about it. Not a happy surprise. Thankfully once that was clean and dried for a day, got the new hard drive in there and I am not happily ripping my Xbox Library to it.

Seriously though, if you have an OG Xbox open it up and remove that capacitor NOW. Another 5 years from now and there's going to be a lot of dead Xboxes out there with corroded motherboards that don't work.

I have a replacement drive belt now so I plan on opening mine up within the week to replace it. I plan on checking the cap as well. However, based on all the external checks I have v1.6; we'll see soon.

I think even 1.6 suffers from it but you can just remove the capacitor no?

I have a 1.6 too with a Xenium modchip in it. It has a 160 gb harddrive but I should probably just use a PATA to SATA adaptor and put a 2 GB inside and rip all my collection.

I haven't completed researching it but the last I recall is that the v1.6 had a better clock capacitor. It also requires the capacitor to function. So it would be a replacement instead of removing it if/when it fails (which isn't a huge deal but adds to it).

I've heard of some 1.6s having problems too though it is significantly less. I think the 1.6s didn't start showing up till 2004, so if yours is a 2002 it definitely needs its cap replaced.

Ok, this XBOX caps armageddon is scary and kinda worrying... Didn't know it was such an inevitable doom for EVERY console. I've got a PAL Crystal system, and A) I've never wanted it to be modded/touched, on top of B) me not being even sure it's something I could do myself (never done any soldering job, and I have no tools, aside from some very generic screwdrivers sets).
Is there at least a way to see if that little leaky bastard is already eating my console from the inside?

Replacing capacitors isn't that difficult, is it? I'm thinking it's kind of an inevitability of being into retro/arcade games.

Speaking of which, I think I might put together an arcade retro thread. Maybe. I'm back at home for the week, and I'm drinking a lot, and that's when I do my best work. We'll see. There's so much to cover, though, that it's likely going to be a WIP thread when I post it.

If it's not a v1.6 there's a pretty solid chance its leaking at this point. The only way to know for sure is to open it up. The Xbox is one of the easier consoles to open up.

I remember having the psx version and being impressed lol coming from the Super Nintendo SF2 port it felt like a huge step up! Looking at it now and there are some severe cuts to the animation!

I read something the other day saying that Xmen: COTA isn't arcade perfect on the Saturn, not sure what's wrong with it but I'm assuming it's animation related. I would love it if Capcom would release all their Marvel license games in one arcade perfect package, now's a good time to capitalise on all this comic book/movie hype.

Yeah, pretty much that. Aside from Street Fighter Zero/Zero 2, more or less every other CAPCOM fighting game before X-Men vs. SF needed to get severe animation cuts, on the Saturn. X-Men CotA, Vampire Hunter and Marvel Super Heroes (in spite of the latter to be compatible with the 1MB - I believe? - expansion cart), none of them can compare with their arcade counterparts' smoothness.

That doesn't really clearly show the main thing missing - tag teams in battles. Aka the entire point of the game.

Biggest missed opportunity that generation was Street Fighter on N64 IMO. That game could have run arcade perfect on a stock N64, due to cart load speeds. And it wouldn't even need that big a cart, the arcade game is 16Mb I think. Yet the put RE2 on N64 and that was a 64Mb cart!

N64 had a six button controller, four controller ports (imagine XvSF with four players tagging in) was starved on fighters, and Capcom's highest selling game of all time remains to this day Street Fighter II on SNES. Muppets.

It would have been awesome if they did a later re-release of COTA with 4M card support once that tech was out to do the arcade version justice.

I love the Saturn CD soundtrack, and it plays great, but the load times... the load times...

I mean, they're there for sure, but... Personally, I've never had a problem with Zero/Zero 2 loading times on the Saturn. Not even nowadays, even though I play them pretty casual, at this point.

i honestly felt i read somewhere the reason nintendo chose the cart format for the N64 was influenced by how well Street fighter II did for SNES. the 6 button layout and load times were important at the time when CD rom tech had problems in the beginning w/ huge load times... but i can't remember where/if i actually read it... i was wondering the same thing... Street Fighter would've been perfect for N64. i think by the time i got the N64 at launch, the Street Fighter crazed passed in the U.S., i have some fond memories of Street Fighter II. i used to cut class to play hard core at the local pool hall. paid a stiff price when my report card came in =P

When I was a younger guy, that game hurt my heart so bad.

I played (watched my friend play) it at the Movies when my we went to see space jam when it first came out.

Was amazing. My friend imported it for the Saturn when it became available.

I rented the PS1 version for compassion and it was sooooo bad. I mean I read about it, heard about it. I wanted to experience it myself.

That game should have never been ported to PS1 unless they had some RAM idea like the saturn or n64 did.

And on that note I always wondered why there were never any capcom fighting games on the n64. You ported Street fighter alpha 2 to the SNES and not the N64......makes no damn sense

It's probably my most played game of that generation. I played lots of single player too, so watched the loading screens a lot.

Now when I play the arcade version emulated, I really miss the beautiful arranged soundtracks. There is no 'ultimate' version for me because of this!

One day I'll get the actual CPS2 board, and even then I'll miss the soundtrack...

Two reasons I can think of:

1) They were only thinking about Japan. N64 actually lost to the Saturn in Japan, it was #3 (Sega's only ever Japanese 'victory' over Nintendo). Hence also not releasing the 4MB outside Japan, USA/PAL was just 'bonus money' for Japanese companies back then.

2) It was part of a general 'fuck you Nintendo I don't even care about lost sales we want to bury you' attitude of third parties for a few years there. Why else did Capcom release like a billion games on the obviously failing Dreamcast otherwise?

Of course there are also sensible reasons like risk vs return, cost of CDs etc, but none of that kind of argument makes much sense of the dying SNES getting Street Fighter Zero 2 and N64 not.

Also 2d games really didn't fit in with what the N64 was trying to sell and the overall obsession and push for 3d content, the game in that respect is was far better suited to the SNES.

I could've sworn I saw a brief tidbit about Capcom working on a port of X-Men Vs SF for N64 back in the day in back of an issue of either Gamefan pr EGM, but I can't find anything else to substantiate this online.
I'm not ruling out this being a false memory from an alternate reality...

Since Nintendo ultimately controlled cart production, and was on its high horse about who could develop (and what they could develop) for the N64, I wouldn't be surprised if the Capcom was worried that they would shutdown the idea of them porting a 2D fighter. (Although this flies in the face of the logic of Nintendo allowing Magical Tetris Challenge being released by Capcom on the console.)

Did the arranged soundtrack not make it into the Alpha Anthology? I haven't really played that compilation too much but heard the ports were decent.

As far as I know, they weren't ports, but straight arcade emulation, soundtrack included.
I guess you heard it's 'decent' because it doesn't run at 240p, which can turn many off.

Ah, that makes sense, yeah I only knew about it being decent from a gameplay perspective, people looking for lag and replicable glitches etc It's a shame the extras didn't make it from consoles, I had a lot of fun with the World Tour mode in Alpha 3.

480i :/ I wonder if it can be forced into any other video modes with GSM.

I remember that rumour too. And yeah Capcom jumped back on board with the most bizzare games - Mickey Tetris, and RE2? RE2 was a head scratcher, if there was a game I would have said was impossible on the system due to size, that was it. The whole thing was built on the basis of being of CD. Making a cart version was insanity, compression or otherwise.

And yet Zero 3 was released on PS1 in butchered form in 1999, while Capcom were busy with... Magical Tetris Challenge on N64. Not 1996, and not 3D.

Nope, they're arcade only, with okay emulation (like mame is better) and 480i/480p output, so useless on most CRTs.


Aaaand I've been beaten like a dead horse... ;)

How come in the old days like in Mortal Kombat the fighter names were inside the life bar on the Mega Drive and outside it on the SNES?

Was it just so there could be a clear difference between the 2 versions for screenshot in magazine purposes or something?

You were making a point as to why a game would be released on the SNES rather than the N64 which I think I gave pretty good reasons as to why that could be the case.

And yes, the initial drive of content on the N64 around 1996 absolutely had a focus on 3d, that doesnt mean no 2d content would be released or suitable for it all though, nor did I suggest such a thing.

Replacing caps isn't that hard. They tend to be pretty large and not clustered together.

That collection still offers alot of contents, in my opinion. I've got the Japanese version, which also includes Zero 2 Alpha, Zero 3 Upper, extra modes and character versions... Now, with the OSSC, I find myself playing the whole series on the Saturn alot more than before, but I still think it's a very solid package, all in all.

Honest curious. What are the technical limits of the PS2 collection? Aside from screen resolution, where is it inferior to standard (MAME) emulation?

Would Alpha Anthology at 480p and a scanline generator look right or is there some funky scaling going on like they did with 3rd Strike on Xbox? I should try and dig up my copy and see how it looks.

The PS2 collection is not inferior to MAME at all which runs slightly too fast due to the cpu wait-states not being emulated correctly for all CPS2 hardware. I have read quotes from Japanese and American tournament players over on the shoryuken forums over the years stating that the PS2 collection is the most accurate when compared to the arcade versions, the main downside is no 240p support. Don't listen to all the sheep telling you that the Saturn version of Zero 3 is the best, it still has cut animation for Rolento and Zangief and cropped resolution on the horizontal, its still very good though.

I see, thanks for the informations.

And no, I don't believe the Saturn version is the absolute best. To be honest with you, I've never noticed the cut animations with Rolento and Zangief, but I can't unsee the slightly wrong aspect ratio. It's only the most gorgeous to look at, out of the ports I can actually play in RGB at 240p. :)

Saturn version of Zero 3 also has worse audio quality for the sound effects... though the music sounds great. I have it primarily for the World Tour mode, and the other niceties of that port... but I do want to get the CPS-2 board at some point.

Oh man, that sucks. I haven't encountered anything that bad yet - and hopefully never will. Just sometimes what appears to be some remains of a dead cat in my Saturn once. Not literally, but damn there was gunk galore.

Agree with elevator. Lots of alcohol. Be sure to buy some beer for yourself as well. Actually, this may call for some hard stuff...
