Retro Studios and the next step

If they're hiring testers, surely it'll release soon?

Maybe this truly is a mega title, and Nintendo are banking the Wii U on it.

As always I want a new thing, I don't even want to hear about metroid, they made games since the game cube and high quality ones at that, it would be really pushing the limits to not be able to finally try to establish an original world.

I'd say this is their chance to do a new thing. Whether or not it's likely is another matter. But it's a new generation, Nintendo knows Retro's artists make good use of their hardware traditionally, and Retro's earned it after DKCR sold gangbusters.

If this doesn't work out, you can guarantee the next game will be another Metroid though. Or another Donkey Kong

Since Retro is hiring testers, that means their project is AT LEAST in an overall alpha state or very close to being at an overall alpha state.

That "tester" position basically confirms we'll see something at E3.

Considering the circumstances surrounding the Wii U, I'm willing to put that number up as well.

It's not just a matter of choice--Retro NEEDS to announce their project during this E3.

It's a no brainer, i think their project is gonna have its own booth at e3. Show a trailer during the direct--build hype--have a demo at e3.

It's Metroid.

The list is infallible. There is little doubt in my mind that if a new Metroid is indeed in development, Retro is very likely developing, who else would it be?

I hope it's Donkey Kong! =)

Not necessarily the country series, maybe a 3D platafformer adventure?

Just don't bring an FPS please!

it's gonna be the most FPS-y FPS you've ever played. it'll be X's twin. their major Japanese subsidiary gets to work on a large-scale RPG. their major Western subsidiary gets to work on a large-scale FPS. they'll release on the same day too. how symmetrical

If they're hiring testers, surely it'll release soon?

no it could still be a long time off. it could be over a year away.

I hope you guys do know that Mario Kart U is indeed Retros new title, Right?

As a Scientist, I tend to take a evidence based approach and leave options open to formally proven or disproven, this however? No. I am confident in nothing if not this.

As an analysis.

At this stage in the industry, I think very few could argue that their are better managed IP than the Mario Kart series. It stands as one of Nintendo's champion properties, the quality has always been unyielding, the gameplay is near perfect. It has outsold the combined might of entire Call of Duty games across a sixth of the platforms. Hideki Konno has ensured the series' relevance over a staggering time period, and as it stands the most recent iteration sold 34 million copies. The property holds unreal, raw power, in every sense of the word.

Retro Studios, besides Monolith, stands as perhaps the only Nintendo studio that you can reliably expect to see something unique. Nintendo have many great studios, but Retro are more than arguably the Nintendo studio which is most well adapted for HD AAA development.

- Hal Laboratory are a talented team, but we are only likely to get 2D platformers from them.
- Intelligent Systems are also very talented, but are most adapted for the 3DS.
- The same can be applied to 1UP, a very small studio tailored for handheld titles.
- Naturally, Game Freak are a similar case.
- Monster Games have just finished Donkey Kong development.

Nintendo EAD are of course, excellent, but highly conservative in their nature when producing 'core' Nintendo titles. Traditionally, they stick to the core IP's. It can be thus deduced, for the best blend of originality, talent, and adaptability for HD development; there is no better studio than Retro for producing a mega title for the Wii U. They are Nintendo's prime western studio, they were responsible for Metroid Prime, the greatest game in the entire industry, and one of the few Nintendo titles that could legitimately challenge a 'mature' audience, yet some people would have you believe they are developing a new Mario Kart.

I think the basis that taking Nintendo's most successful IP, removing it from the status quo and then going on to hand it to one of Nintendo's key differentiators in software development is absolutely wildly unreasonable and I can't help but mark those strongly proposing such an outcome (Nirolak, EatChildren), as highly questionable in their motives.

People may hate on the thought of Nintendo producing an FPS, but I think unless Miyamoto's new team is doing it, then an online focused heavyweight action game is REALLY what Nintendo should be doing right now. If the Mario Kart rumour is true, then dear goddess help them.

I would be okay with Mario Kart being Retro's title. I love the franchise, I love Retro and I love tears becuase of no "Dark epic AAA shit". Also, Nintendo needs to reclaim its Arcade racer crown after Sega claimed it.

Hush you. Don't jinx it.

This is the only title that makes sense. They worked on the 3ds version and proved to nintendo that they can handle a true hardcore series. This is the next step. Just like Rare taking the helms of the Donkey kong character.

And they hired half the Vigil art team (including character and concept artists) to make another Mario Kart?

Yep, If you were a developer under a company, and that company just handed you a successful franchise/account like mario kart. You would turn it down? Why?

Because maybe retro does not want to make a racing game that has established mechanics?

A lot of us here think retro has a thirst to create some new and exciting gameplay. That's something that can be done with a metroid prime 4. Not a Mario kart Wii u.

This assuming that the company is handing you the responsibility of making Mario Kart when the company already has somebody else making Mario Kart.

Theres plenty of gameplay and mechanics retro can implement into a mario kart title. Open world and adventure mode or something would be awesome. :/

My point is that Retro wouldn't really need all those artists to do Mario Kart in the first place.

Metroid guys are doing Mario Kart
Mario Kart team is doing Metroid

This is the only thing that makes sense, guys

lol

ftr, I don't believe they are working on mario kart. retro is doing something else. hopefully its a new ip

Just because Retro helped on MK7 doesn't mean that they are working on MK8, is like saying Monolith Soft is working in the next console Zelda.[they helped on SS]

Eww... no. You take your diddy kong racing fantasies elsewhere. Open world in a cart racer is both tedious and (quite frankly) stupid. Adventure mode is like putting story mode into fighting games. Oh cute, a little cut scene that is mind boggling bad that can't expand on the characters or story because it's all non-canon mario spin off.

Mario Kart is a proven franchise that doesn't need be fixed, I fail to understand how Retro would be a good fit for it since gameplay mechanics are set in stone, and Nintendo's EAD is more than enough for MK, the only way could be Retro doing the grunt work with Nintendo supervising the hell of it.

You need to stop assuming things. They are an internal development group. If nintendo needs a team to handle or help in a project then that is what they will do. Try not to extend your desires as representative of what the group wants to do.

Mario Kart Future from Retro:

Triathlon Kart racing.

First phase--- karts on lush conventional courses

Second phase--- Jetskis through crazy WAVES

Third phase--- Futuristic vehicles and tracks that defy gravity and speed

Okay, I don't mean to sound like im speaking for the group, but I don't think artists leave naughty dog and vigil to work for the developers of metroid prime and dkcr to work on a friggin Mario kart game. How is that for assumptions?

I don't think they should bring an FPS, the genre is clearly entering in the falling curve, people are getting tired of it.

Damn, Retro can bring more to the table than what we think a western studio should do to appeal to westerns audiences.

What if they flip the genre on its head though???
