Revolution: Mid 2006

Mosys? Watch them pack a smaller amount of ram into the system like this gen and people will still run "but its faster!" damage control.

Doesn't seem that far away. I'm excited.

I've been hearing they're going to release 2-3 months prior to the PS3, instead of 2-3 months after.

But I've always known/assumed that the Rev was going to get a Spring launch in Japan and a Summer launch in the US.

Revolution is gonna be something special. I can't wait to see what they came up with. :)

*don't let me down Nintendo! you bastards!*

<-----you see my tear?.. I hurt sometimes.

Nintendo were the ones that made that choice. The RAM it self worked out great. I've been worried about access times and such for the next generation, but this news is somewhat of a nice assurance in regards to Nintendo's next machine.

Seems Elpida lost out. Can't say I'm disappointed..at least this adds some more diversity to the technical mix. Can't wait to see what they come up with!

Anyone know if this will be the same type of RAM as in GC, or have Mosys refined/revised it since, or come out with newer version? I haven't been keeping up with Mosys tech..

Michael "TYP" says: I was just talking with Deguello last night about Nintendo treating June as a serious launch timeframe this year. A Revolution launch for "school's out" month seems reasonable, especially if Nintendo (and Sony) want to reduce Microsoft's lead time with the Xbox360.

hmm

Problem there is it likely won't be called Revolution. Nice idea though.

Why can't you people just cooperate with my trademark

Nintendo New Sexy (tm)

not that hard to remember, why some of you fighting it?

So what does '1T-SRAM' mean then?

One transitor SRAM. The memory has low latency, which Nintendo argued was better for game development based on the way that games access memory generally.

Rather than calling it the New Sexy (which is actually already trademarked to the PSP), might I suggest the "Nintendo Third Place", which keeps the "3" theme of the next-gen consoles!

That would be great. If the news is true I'd probably wait for the Revolution and hold off getting the 360 until I can find it used with some cheaper games.

I kind of think Sony is dictating when the next gen really starts. Will a dev want to release a game on the 360 to a maximum installed base of a couple million when they could release it on the PS2 with an installed base of tens of millions? As long as the PS2 market is healthy, the next-gen will be somewhat hampered. MS 1st and 2nd parties are probably going to have to carry a heavy load for a while.

I just had to :lol

why you don't believe me?

Nintendo New Sexy has been on GAF for a few days now...

stop calling it that. I'm a fanboy but its such a turn off to read that phrase.

just stop.

Its launching after 2-3 months after PS3? Where did you get the info on when PS3 hits the market? That'd mean they'd sell it in March. If its later..... doomed.

Stop Lying!

PSP = Sexy WideScreen (tm)

you have your own trademark

I have mines, fans should play fair Mr. One Console Future (tm drinky crow)

Nintendo New Sexy (tm smiles)

Nice find...

i also think the will release the system in september 2006... like 10 years after the nintendo 64 release.

well link me and i'll believe you. i think that's hilarious that reggie said this...lol

I try to resist these GAF fads for as long as possible.

Its basically DRAM, I'm not sure but the 1T = 1 Transistor. Its set up to reduce the memory die size to reduce cost. The question I have is will it be main memory or embedded memory for the GPU. I remember reading that memory in the GC gets pretty hot as one of the drawbacks, but wasn't enough to affect performance.

There have been other hints from Nintendo that can suggest a mid 2006 release. Cheifly, in interviews, whenever they're asked about giving the Xbox2 a year headstart, they always respond that the question is based on speculation and assumptions.

yeah no kidding.

Xbox 360 is supposedly getting 512 MB of GDDR3

then

Revolution gets, ehhh, probably 192 MB of low-latency MoSys 1T-SRAM

'cuz

Xbox1 got 64 MB DDR

Gamecube got 24 MB 1T-SRAM main memory

it'll be same ratio again.

haha, just kidding, i hope.

I hope they attempt something more global in terms of release.
That or reduce the wait between American and European launches drastically.

If it's out for mid next year, and E3 is lite on the Revolution stuff, next E3 should be packed FULL of it.

The RAM was pointed out by a lot of devs as a drawback wasn't it? In fact didn't they reduce the RAM and flippers clockspeed shortly before finalising launch? Anyway, I'm betting it'll have a fair amount of the stuff, and that ATIs offering(s) will have quite a bit onboard too.

funny enough "Nintendo Third Place" is what they are going for.

think Nintendo will be happy to watch Sony and Microsoft bitch over who has the best Media Centre and try to stand out from those 2.

good question. I hope it is higher-bandwidth this time (relative to the generation / times)

the main system 1T-SRAM memory of Gamecube was going to be 3.2 GB/sec but got cut to 2.6 GB when the changed the clockspeeds of the GPU, CPU and buses.

eh, I hope the new MoSys 1T-SRAM in Revolution is at least in the 20 GB/sec range.

The amount of RAM was pointed out as a drawback, no the RAM itself. I don't remember if they reduced the RAM shortly before finalising, I don't think they did. They did reduce the GPU clockspeed, but increased the CPU at the same time. MS did similar things.

they reduced the clockspeeds of the GPU and buses sometime before E3 2001.

but the RAM amount reduction happened about a year or more earlier, sometime prior to Spaceworld 2000.

original RAM amount for Dolphin: 32 to 64 MB of NEC DRAM (not 1T-SRAM) plus 8 to 16 MB of embedded 1T-SRAM

final RAM amount for Gamecube: 24 MB of 1T-SRAM plus 3+ MB of embedded 1T-SRAM

Ah thanks for the clarification. That's what I meant re: the RAM though. There wasn't enough. It's great for latency, people just wanted more.
