In short: According to "The Diamond Weekly" the Revolution will have no digital d-pad and no A and B-buttons.

So that's the revolution?

Well I guess when you have gyroscopes you don't need dpads or buttons. They'd be pretty useless when dealing with holograms anyway.

Isn't Nintendo copying Sony this time now? :P I recall some interview from Sony that the PS3 will have a motion sensor thingy like Eyetoy, where you can access menus like Minority Report

The PS2 should do that now.

It's not the first time Nintendo have tried to remove the D pad if this is true though. The original GC pad had the Start button where the D pad was, but I believe they bowed to third party pressure (or pressure from somewhere anyway) and put it in last minute.

This is the only prototype GC pad that I've ever seen. Are there pictures of this earlier version you speak of?

"In related news, first details are emerging about the launch games for the new console. Scheduled to be unveiled for release with the system are Kirby: Air Ride 2, Kirby: Air Ride All Stars, and Kirby and Pikachu Air Ride Saga."

I think the patent Nintendo filed on the D-Pad ages ago expires soon, or has already expired. That could be the reason!

Well it looks like after the GameCube I won't be buying anymore Nintendo products. The Nintendo DS is lousy and gimmicky and it looks like the Revolution is following the same path.

If lousy and gimmicky gets me some low-budget Hentai games then I don't want to be superb and innovative!

Ahhh... that would explain why you need an electron microscope to find the D-Pad on the GC controller!

Hooray for basing our future purchases on poorly-translated foreign news stories instead of solid information on hardware and software. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Not to mention it's been translated from a German website reporting on Japanese news.

It's like playing telephone. The original message is now horribly garbled and useless.

Seriously. I need real news, people!

E3 can't come soon enough.

What was the rumour about not showing anything about Xenon at CES and using a later show (but not E3) instead? Which show was that, and when is it (just in case)?

We should be getting our first taste of next-generation in a few weeks at CES... hopefully.

I hope so. It'll be nice to see what direction the new consoles will start to take... whatever Xenon does... there's a good chance Sony is going to try to top that. Nintendo is in a class of their own so their prospects always excite me more initially. They almost never follow the trends.

Remember the "3rd Pillar" talks of last year. :lol

From Rumor>semi confirmation>full confirmation (Vision, PR etc...)>Leaked Specs>e3 Revealing.

From fall 2003 to spring 2004

D-Pads could be used by most devs as buttons anyways...it's 4 extra buttons your controller will lose if you get rid of them.

I was just playing Psi-Ops...and without the D-Pad...it would complicate things.

Well, if this is true, I think it's pretty clear that Nintendo would not be looking for ports of games to the Revolution, which makes the whole "you need it for Tony Hawk/Psi-Ops/Street Fighter" thing kind of moot.

The doesnt explain anything. It doesnt tell us if they are going to make a normal console or some sort of new deviuce. If tthey want to remove the d-pad and A and B buttons and still make a normal console, then god help them.

bleh. there's no way i'd buy a console without a digital pad. well, unless it had a full on digital arcade stick with microswitches. consider me a counterrevolutionary.

If we have learned anything from the DS, it's that Nintendo is intent on changing the way we interface with our games. Ever since Iwata mentioned that the DS is a hint of things to come for the Revolution, it's been all about the interface.

The Revolution will present to us and developers entirely new ways to interface with our games (apparently without a d-pad or A and B buttons). Nintendo was the one to bring the D-pad to us, so it makes sense they'd be the ones to take it away and show us why we don't need it anymore.

Or maybe the new interface will just alienate them from developers and gamers alike... who knows? Until we see their patented technology, it's up in the air for speculation.

Exactly what i was thinking. Aren't there already a couple of multiplatform games announced for next gen? How are they going to make a console that has a control input so radically different that it causes a "revolution" in gameplay, and also plays the same games that are on PS3/xenon? If it's too different it might hurt them in the long run with less people making multiplatform ports onto revolution because of the crazy control input. Anyway my prediction is that it's gonna be based on some stupid gimmick that'll get old fast. I hope I'm wrong.

i wonder if a touch screen/pad could be configured to replace the d-pad and left-stick.

it would be nice if they brought back the 6-face button setup

At this point I'm sure Nintendo is exploring a wide variety of options but the design won't be finalized for quite a while. There's simply no way "The Diamond Weekly" knows what the final configuration will be like.

Personally I'm quite happy for Nintendo to go off in a completely different direction. From their perspective, they've already shown they can't compete with MS and Sony directly, so why even bother? And from our perspective, I don't need another generation with three consoles which basically do the same thing. If the Revolution doesn't have a D Pad, that's not going to stop any games which need one from coming out, they'll just be on the other systems.

Sounds good all round to me.

Wait though. If the Revolution is backwards compatible with Gamecube, the controller will have to sport at least equivalents to the Gamecube controller buttons, d-pad, and sticks for GC games that require them.

Or, Nintendo could simply allow for GC accessories to plug into Revolution ports. This would handily solve the problem of allowing them to make whatever kind of new controller they like - but may offer a some increased confusion / hassle for consumers.

Still, I suppose it's not too different than Sony requiring you to still buy PSOne memory cards to save PSOne games on PS2.

when they said that DS was a hint of things to come on the Revolution, they could've very well been talking about wireless multiplayer. remember, the Revolution will also have PC Monitor Connectivity out of the box. who knows what they're gonna use that for.

Reggie also said not to long ago that the thing that made the Revolution so revolutionary had to do with multiplayer.

im expecting a new control interface on top to boot. but i wouldn't be suprised if it wasn't anything too radical. although i do expect the investments they made in gyrations back in '01 to come into play.

really, who knows.

my guesses though, crazy wireless going on, PC Monitor used in ways we aren't expecting, and hopefully another paradigm shift in controller interface.

i also feel that Nintendo will use their future in the Animation Industry as a reason to make the system have DVD support.

if they have some kind of Re-writable media, and a new control interface, i really get the feeling that Nintendo is gonna do start doing a lot of crazy Mario Artist type of shit again like they did on the 64DD (especially with DS there to help out if need). they'll also implement whatever films they've created in the next 3-5 years. the DS will also more than likely act as one of the many middlemans to get their film content on the Revolution. especially when you consider that Nintendo plans to have DS connectivity in their films.

if the system in the end doesn't have radical changes in controller design, then i think Nintendo won't have anything to worry about as far as 3rd party support goes in 3-5 years. since by then, all 3rd party games will be released on all platforms due to cost of game development. there will probably only be 5-7 big publihsers left.

Although some interpret this as Revolution having VGA out I reckon it means either DVI or HDMI. VGA is nearly obsolete and DVI/HDMI is also supported by flat panel TVs. I reckon Xbox 2 will feature DVI/HDMI as well.
