Revolution Sound Chip = Factor 5?

I would safely bet that Factor 5 iz currently working on the sound chip to Revolution. I'd sure like some information though on what they've done after Rebel Strike...

A Factor 5 rep at the GDC only stated that the company is working on an unnanounced project for next generation Console(s). Which is pretty much is what we all knew for a while.

At the Microsoft GDC presentation, they had a slide that showed the partners for the Xbox2, and Factor 5 was on that list.

Nintendo's all about compression. That'd be swell if all the next-gen systems didn't require a soundchip. The GBA on the other hand...

Gamecube's audio hardware was a 16-bit DSP from Macronix. it was built into the Flipper LSI

I wonder if Revolution will have:

a.) a seperate audio processor like SNES (and NES?)
b.) an integrated audio processor built into the Hollywood GPU, ala Macronix DSP in Flipper
c.) audio processing done on one of the main CPU cores, like Xenon apparently does

So what are the positives and negatives with these?

I'm sure Factor 5 is working on sound tools for all the next generation system. Musy X(enon)!

True, a lot of people are thinking Factor5 is making games for Xenon, when it's quite possible they're just a middleware partner. They were a Xbox middleware partner too.

Though it wouldn't wholly surprise me to see them release Xenon games next-gen..I'm just hoping Nintendo didn't somehow snub them (for example if the rumoured Pilotwings project fell through and Nintendo gave them the cold shoulder, or something). I'd LOVE to think they were still quietly working on Pilotwings, for a Revolution launch...between their technical prowess, and NCL's gameplay direction, it'd probably be a must-have. And alongside a Mario game, Rev's launch would carry nice nostalgic N64-ish overtones..:)

...err...sorry..kinda got a little carried away there :P

Agreed about Pilotwings. But if they plan on rehashing Rogue Squadron for a third-generation in a row, Xenon would definetly be their best place. Best to release the game on a platform where the majority will not have played all the missions at least once before.

Is revolution confirmed Dolby Digital or are they cheaping out again with Pro logic II

They didn't cheap out on this. Before this generation, few people thought that we would see real-time surround in game. And in reality, few games actually feature it. DPII was a nice solution at a time the GC launched.

I would be surprised if any of the 3 next-gen consoles used a discrete sound chip...

They will probably do all sound processing in software via their CPUs....

I already know Xenon will used Dolby Digital Plus and PS3 will have the option to use a SLEW of audio codecs (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital Lossless, dts, dts-HD)

With as much processing power as CELL has, I would expect dts and/or Dolby Digital in-game realtime audio at minimum and perhaps Dolby Digital Plus too, if we are lucky...
