Why the fuck aren't we seeing more independent publishing by larger bands? I figure all it takes is a U2, Pearl Jam, Offspring or whatever to independently publish and release a new CD/download with no label to get the ball rolling. Yeah I know Pearl Jam has those bootleg's coming out, but I meant more original music.

Pearl Jam tried it with the single for the song they did for Big Fish. No hard numbers were released, but I think they did ok. They still went on to sign with BMG so I guess it wasn't too lucrative. and they are doing something novel with their current tour: no DRM on the mp3s and the mp3s are at a decent bitrate (192) as well. Of course, they also aren't playing any[i/] new songs on this tour. :/borghe said:
seriously. how hard would it be for a group like U2 to produce their own songs (I'm pretty sure they already do for the most part), ship off digital copies to Apple and Napster, and sell them that way. They could still ship discs to radio stations for airplay and then sell CDs on tour for a much reduced rate. The artists themselves would see a bulk load of the revenue and as enough artists started doing it they could probably, taking into account the screw job by the RIAA when it comes to royalties, see as much revenue from music sales as the currently do from CD sales.

Its too bad these RIAA fools dont realize how much music i bought after grabbing some mp3s from the original napster days up to today. Im sure im not alone in this. some of the cd's i wouldnt have picked up prior to hearing the 'evil' mp3s:
