Rich SF residents get a shock: Someone bought their street

Gate the street and literally close it down for a year so thier is no access.

Wait for a year, offer to buy each house on it for pennies on the dollar, own all house on street, remove gate sell street back to homeowners association (which you are now the only member) start selling house at normal SF prices.

Retire.

Post in gaf allday everyday.

lol I know exactly where that is. Pretty ritzy

That place looks so cramped, hardly any privacy in the yards. Some of the lots have to park cars on the street it seem. I'd look for another location if I had the money to blow on those spacious boxes.

I guess it's funny to see successful people get swindeled?

This seems fucked up that they would allow the rights to the street to be sold without consulting the owners of the houses first.

I had to let home owners put a drive way through my land to theirs. So I would like to know how come I can't charge them for this like these people did....

So...

People are upset that rich people live there and the fact the HOA made a big mistake and lost the private street. Now the rich people should be punished because they're rich?

Feel like I'm missing something.

As far as I can tell, a mob-mentality fueled by the class discrimination, savvy underdog success-story, and a real-life trolling.

It is pretty messed up, imagine if someone bought a pharma company and raised the prices for the same reason the guy bought the street. It was a completely different GAF reaction then.

Can't hate the hustle. The new owners are alot more generous that I would be. I'd start charging the residents every time they use my street either by walking or using their car. It will be charged by feet of my street used. Rates will be reasonable and be based on income levels. Dogs and children under 5 will be free though and I'll run half-off Sunday promotions!

I like that you have detailed plans for fuckery that you could accomplish aspirationally. Maybe you cvoujld get into so e sort of slumlord internship?

Residents could always just start wearing chains on their tires if the wanna fuck up the roads. Repair costs would mount pretty quick.

Gotta say though, having a hard time mustering any sort of empathy for either side here.

If I'm understanding correctly, this is entirely the HOA's screw up. Is it really reasonable to expect these people to know that they were supposed to be charged an extra $14 a year? Should these people have hired lawyers to scour the books to make sure they were paying everything they're supposed to? Why did the city not approach them? This is a strange, shitty situation that sucks from every angle.

Also, the "fuck the rich" sentiment in this thread is disgusting.

a large part of why this real life scenario is funny to many of us where the hypothetical "what if this happened to poor people" scenario is not is because there's very little chance that this will have a proportionally similar impact on the lives of these rich residents when compared to the lives of hypothetical poor ones.

on a more visceral level, "fuck the poor" is far more disgusting than "fuck the rich" because the former absolutely have far less power and opportunity than the latter (often due to the actions of the latter).

this seems obvious

Then they'd have to pay damage fees, I would assume.

They'll sick--not teams but--FIRMS of lawyers on this to fight it. Rich people are generally smart about this stuff. They'll know the power these people will have over them and they won't let that happen. The lawyers will delay it for decades with motions in the courts.

They'll be careful not the get a court to invalidate the practice ipso facto. Because they still want to buy your street or your highway and fill them with expensive meters and tolls. They'll get the transaction invalidated or find a way to put the street back up for auction. They don't want "the help" owning their street. That can't let this stand. They own the help. The help doesn't own them.

I thought you had to own a home in that area to be in the HOA. How did none of them realize the taxes hadn't been paid or even if they got a new accountant does that mean they knew it wasn't paid? Someone needs to be fired for skimming money.

GAF law - if you're rich, **** you. Irrespective of how you got it. Irrespective of whether they are at fault or the facts of the matter. Let's laugh at them. All of them. Got it.

People are people. If this had been a poor neighbourhood and a rich ***** had bought their street, GAF would be categorically screaming for the buyer to give it back. I imagine certainly many wouldn't be scoffing that the 'poor people are at fault for not reading up on matters like this, so **** 'em'

Taxes are no joke, whoever is running the HOA should of known that all land has a tax bill, even if they never saw one.
Unless CA is different then many other states, property tax bills are public record and can be found online with the address, block/lot number, or name of owner. Not paying a bill because it was mailed to your old address is simply not an excuse in 2017.

So how would you feel if someone bought the parking spots on your street because your bills were being mailed to the wrong address?

Same way I felt when someone bought the parking lot next to my workplace and upped the prices? Or when someone bought the apartment building I lived in and gave everyone notice cause they were converting to condos?

People with money fuck with other people's living conditions all the time. The difference here is that these homeowners have the money to cushion the blow a bit.

Also your analogy doesn't quite make sense - am I the HOA person paying the bills in that analogy? If so, I think in 30 years or so I would have bothered to wonder where my tax bills were going. If I know I owe taxes, and I never get a bill, I don't usually go on with my life thinking "Whelp, guess I don;t have to pay." And if I am just a resident, then I got fucked by the street buyers AND my HOA, which, from reading GAF, I am pretty sure is the intended function of HOAs anyway.

I wonder who pays when there's a problem with the sewer/gas/electric? Like, if there's an earthquake and the lines break so the city has to come tear up the street to fix it, who pays to have it repaved, painted, sidewalks, ect? The street owner? That can cost millions.

It's not fuck the rich. It's fuck feeling bad for the rich. There are so many other people I can feel bad for in my day.

Think about this: the ABSOLUTE WORST outcome for these people is that they might have to pay for parking. Oh the humanity!

The street owners have to continue to allow free access to the houses, the city handles street lights, sewers, etc. That's it. The owners might charge for parking. This entire story is "HOA fucks up, some people who can obviously afford it might have to pay for parking, city still has massive homeless population"

I feel bad for people who have to live in shitty buildings with flammable cladding stapled to the outside. I feel bad for people whose HOAs prevent them from selling their house cause they don't like the looks of the new owner's taxi. But "Oh no, we have to pay for parking?" Get a driveway.

I would have done the same thing, and would have slept like a baby TBH

The next day I would be scrolling down the very same topic on gaf, chortling at the comments while sipping on some coffee

You can afford to sit on a $90K investment for 2 years? Watch out, GAF already hates you.

Skimming $14 a year?

The funniest part about this story is people trying to take the moral highground by caping for some rich people that were fucked by a system rigged against poor people.

The funny thing is if this had been an owner that didn't pay the fee to the HOA, the HOA would've done the same thing to their property. They don't like it when their own rules are applied to them though.
Ding ding ding.
Hoist by their own petard, as they say.

Actually wouldnt the WORST outcome from this is that it might sets a legal precedent? sure we might laugh at this story now, wait till hundreds of streets are potentially bought up.

Yea I'm not saying fuck them, and I'm not hoping they suffer, but I really don't feel bad for them.

I'm sure they can solve the problem easily.

Yes, a lot of hypocrites.

Pretty much. This is nothing new or surprising.

They might be rich but not rich enough. I've heard of cases like this where Stadiums had 'errors' happen that had to be corrected. I wonder how? $$$

Anyways, that is one of the ugliest neighborhoods in the world. Why on earth would you buy a house that is sideways abutting the road?

Now Im curious does the new owner have to take care of the street to any level of standard? If I was on of the owners on that street I would have eng. firms out everyday measuring and evaluating every inch of the road.

"Oh the slope of the road is 3.5 degrees...city code says it can only be 3 degrees"
"hmm this crack is 1mm longer than what is acceptable"
"its says curbs can only be 3 inches this one is 3.1"

as well it was a construction firm that bought the land, it would be terrible if they found they started having problems getting permits for any of their jobs...

SF neighborhood infrastructure is overall crappy. Alot of the streets here can barely fit two lanes, so much that alot of the time I find myself just pulling to the side and letting the other lane go first so I don't get dinged. I'd gladly take that street structure over alot here.

Actually wouldnt the WORST outcome from this is that it might sets a legal precedent? sure we might laugh at this story now, wait till hundreds of streets are potentially bought up.
The legal precedent is tax foreclosure, and it's existed for centuries. This is not new, novel, or scary.

$90K for the street? With 35 residents and presumably at least that many cars, you'd have to charge them more than $850 yearly on everyone for three years to get back your investment.
$850 a year for a parking spot in SF? That would be M.E.G.A. cheap. circa 2010. I don't even wanna know what spots go for per month, right now.

Or they just buy insurance and roll it into the parking fee.

This 100%. The residents of the neighborhood don't deserve sympathy, not for any moral reason but simply because they have the wealth and resources to take care of this. If they start getting charged $5,000 a year per parking space, they can readily pay that.
