I know I'm in the minority, but I actually really dig the look of their space-suits in this. Its the sort of thing I grew up seeing on the cover of old hard sci-fi novels. Love it.

I watched it in a movie theater on opening night and it was gorgeous. It is gorgeous. Nobody is saying Sunshine touches Alien - but the film is great and the production design is beautiful. Calling it cheap and shitty looking is more than a bit of a stretch jettiri.

different strokes for different folks

i have all kinds of problems with that movie tbh, but this is not the place :P

This is a real hnnnnh moment

that shot reminds me of the opening shot of Avatar....

edit:
i remember some people on gaf complaining about the suits.
i told y'all to believe motherfuckers, believe.

The extended version has one CG alien shot when it runs away from the dead ox. A real directors cut has never been made. If it did it would have a few additions still and would still use the dog as the chest burster instead of the ox.
Yeah, I see it was a puppet. Regardless, it looked awful compared to the aliens from the earlier films.
I could get beyond that if the rest of the movie were better. None of the prisoners are distinctive enough to get the audience invested, the sexual politics become the story for half of the film instead of being largely subtext like in the first two films, and the alien itself doesn't feel as intimidating. I think it was because we see it too much.

lol, thats the first thing that that shot reminded me of as well.

Agreed.

I think people are disturbed that they don't resemble the Nostromo crew suits, which were meant to survive under hazardous mining conditions in deep space, not exploration. Hence the difficulty Dallas, Kane, and Lambert had navigating inside of the derelict in those cumbersome suits. I really like the sci-fi-y look of the Prometheus suits, and they appear far better suited for archaeological exploration.

Love it but still, so much cgi. It really bothers me. Will we ever see another sco fi or fantasy flick without it? I come to think of the problem being that old sfx were done by artist whereas cgi is done by computer nerds. It's just so damn in your face and unimaginative, a constant reproduction of standard fare. I am particularly looking at you lord of the rings.

that shot of that woman reminds me of signourney weaver so much. hopefully...it's her.

edit:
holy shit sculli...stop thinking about the same things i think about!

You do realize not everything is possible with animatronics and models, right? People are overrating how well old methods looked. They WON'T look well without the natural graininess and low quality of older films. Not to mention people only hate on CGI when they see bad CGI but in reality there's probably a large number of elements of movies that are created digitally that you don't even notice

Old techniques never looked any better or more real. A puppet looks like a puppet, a guy in a suit is a guy in a suit, Models are models, and stop motion is stop motion. This is especially true when watching a 70's or 80's movie in HD. The seams really show poorly.

If something can't be done with practical effects then it shouldn't be done at all. Most directors nowadays are too busy drooling over CGI that becomes dated within a few years. In 30 years from now, I guarantee you that Alien will still hold up better than Prometheus.

That's a terrible mentality. Even old movies known for their awesome use of models and animatronics like Jurassic Park needed CGI for some scenes

This is one of the worst things I've ever heard.

I've no qualms with photorealistic CG. It's when it looks like plasticine that we have a problem. Watching that trailer, we don't have a problem.
