Ritek R03 DVD+R's: 8x? Not for most drives...

Just a heads up, you will need good firmware to burn successful discs @ 8x with R03 media. It's advertised as being 8x, but most burners will only support it at 4x. My LDW411S@811S with slightly older firmware did not burn good discs at 8x; my PS2 would report disc read errors every couple of minutes. Flashing to the latest firmware fixes this problem... but there's still a weird pattern left on the back of the disc when its finished, and towards the end of the disc there are a few spots where the dye appears to be darker than usual. While playing, when you get to the end of the movie, you can hear the DVD player working a bit harder to read the data, but the display is not interrupted. The discs are made by Ritek, not Ricoh, so its not as reliable.

I should order some 4x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's for more important backups. I bet I could burn them at 8x without a hitch. I don't really trust this R03 media; anyone else having problems? I'm just worried Ritek now is going back to being the way they were with their older CD-R's; successful burns, but eventually it starts skipping and finally doesn't work at all.

Oh yeah: If you have a NEC drive, do NOT buy this media. It'll only burn at 4x.

Burned with my 411S@811S, latest 811S firmware, 8x.
The above is the disc being read by my NEC ND2500-A, one of the most pickiest DVD readers on the market. Notice how it drops at the end.

R03 is the classification Ritek uses for their more 'economical' media. Your better off paying a few bucks more for R04 stuff. I have a 16X burner, but I just bought another spindle of 4X Ritek G04s. I've had alot of luck with them and you can get a 50-pack spindle for just over 20 bucks these days. I don't really care about burning fast so much as burning reliably.

I had an online site shaft me once and give me G03 media claiming it was G04 (think it was shop4tech.com). I made about 4 DVD movie coasters with them, and threw them in a drawer to collect dust and occasionally burn some data or discs for friends. ;)

These should be Ritek G04 4X DVD+Rs. I buy DVD-Rs myself, but there shouldn't be much difference between the two. Check out all the glowing reviews. G04s are a pretty proven disc.

I was using the system quite abit in the background so the CPU tests didn't go through, it may also account for the little bit of jitter here or there. Either way, looks stable, and all the video DVDs I've created lately have played flawlessly.

I don't know what's up with their R0* batches, they don't seem to be good for anyone. The G04 (4x) and G05 (8x) are h0t and cheap.

Agreed. I've been burning with G04s successfully across two different burners and several players for about a year now. I may have to try some G05s my next go around, but man, the G04s are so cheap...
