I'm looking to round up as many rock "essentials" as possible for my collection. It doesn't matter the decade (other than the 90s), but I'm looking for the best of the best. There are two things in particular that I'm NOT looking for: 80s metal and Pink Floyd. Here's what I have a LOT of so far:

-Beach Boys
-David Bowie
-The Clash
-The Ramones
-A lot of New Wave (but recommendations are welcome)
-Motown

Stuff I love but don't want to wade through the lesser-material or don't know where to start:
-Beatles
-Cat Stevens
-Bob Dylan
-Roxy Music/Brian Eno
-Sex Pistols
-The Kinks
-50s Music in general
-T. Rex
-Kraftwerk

So... I suppose I'm trying to build a well-rounded "history of rock" collection. Feel free to suggest, suggest, suggest.

For the Beatles, I have a nice little list if you haven't heard 'em already.

Norwegian Wood
Strawberry Fields Forever
Sgt. Pepper's Loneyl Hearts Club Band
Back in the USSR (an ode to Beach Boys sorta thing)
Day Tripper
Get Back
Lady Madonna
Hey Jude
Let it Be
Dear Prudence
Here Comes the Sun
I am the Walrus
Revolution
While my Guitar Gently Weeps
A Day in the Life

Rush - Moving Pictures, 2112, Presto
Yes - The Ladder
Elivs Costello - My Aim Is True (greatest hits)
Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage romeos

If the Clash, Ramones, and MC5 is allowed, then I'd like to add the Stooges and maybe even New York Dolls. Same goes for Kraftwerk and Can. Don't mean to be Captain Obvious, but I don't think anyone's mentioned The Smiths.

Well, er, The Pixies and REM must be mentioned here. They basically form the backbone of most recent alt. rock (that's actually worth a shit).

Pixies - Surfer Rosa, Doolittle
REM - Murmur, Reckoning, Document

Also: Television! Get Marquee Moon stat. :)

As for New Wave, the pre-eminent New Wave band are of course, the Talking Heads. Get Fear of Music and Remain in Light, if nothing else.

Lastly, for pure funky randomness:
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

Zepplin fucking suuuuucks, btw.

What the FUCK?

anyway..

Lynyrd Skynyrd is more "southern rock" i guess but still some classic stuff...

Zeppelin..definitely.

QUEEN

70's Chicago is some good shit but some would say it isn't rock...whatever.

Even if you don't like their other stuff, Hotel California by the Eagles is a fucking amazing album.

Beatles.

'Bout fucking time we got some Rush love.

And where the hell is U2's Joshua Tree? Sheesh. Unforgettable Fire's probably worth snagging as well.

A pretty good list to start. Let me just add what I've liked.

Bowie. I'm a huge Bowie fan. Ziggy is the starting point for many, but I like TMWSTW and Hunky Dory as much. But my favorite, if I had to pick one would be Heroes.

Roxy Music/Eno. I been just as much a Roxy fan. To many, the definitive Roxy Music album is their second one, For Your Pleasure. For the post Eno peroid, perhaps their last one, Avalon would be it, but its much different than the early stuff. Eno - my favorite is Before and after Science.

You gotta have some Queen in there somewhare too for that 70s sound, I guess A Night at the Opera is where to start.

New Wave,

I'm also a big Numan fan, but I would go with his album Replicas as his landmark album.

A band that I would also recommend would be Japan. Cleary Bowie/Roxy Music influenced, but deveoped their own style, which I feel many copied.

I was also a fan of Ultravox.
