Rockstar Games Announces PSP Handheld Entertainment System Lineup
Monday January 10, 7:55 am ET

A New Grand Theft Auto Title and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Available This Spring

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 10, 2005--Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO - News), is proud to announce Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition and a brand new iteration of Grand Theft Auto for the highly anticipated PSP(TM) handheld system. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition and the new Grand Theft Auto title, which will be set in Liberty City, are being developed by Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with Rockstar San Diego and Rockstar North, respectively. Both titles are expected to be available near the launch of the PSP handheld system in North America and Europe.

"Bringing two of our most successful game franchises to this thrilling new platform not only gives us an opportunity to create a new dimension for these already extraordinary series but also allows us to begin to explore the full potential of the PSP handheld system," said Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "Sony's extremely impressive technology has allowed Rockstar Leeds to do more on a handheld machine than we could have ever imagined. We are very excited for gamers to experience these two genre-defining franchises in a fashion that could have never before been possible on a portable system."

"We are working very closely with Rockstar North and Rockstar San Diego to ensure that both Grand Theft Auto and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition remain faithful to the initial vision of these respective franchises," said Gordon Hall, President of Rockstar Leeds. "We understand that gamers' expectations will be very high for new PSP handheld system titles and we are confident that we can deliver exhilarating experiences that will set the standard for what a PSP game can be with Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition and our new Grand Theft Auto title."

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition has previously been announced for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and Xbox® video game system from Microsoft.

This spring?? Wow, that's quick. They mention Liberty City...hopefully it's not a straight port of GTA III. Well, they did say "new" so maybe it's a remake or just a title set in the same city.

Maybe they'll just call it Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City.

It'd be really cool if it had load times like San Andreas, but I'm not holding my breath.

We have major uh oh! Regardless, this news has certainly brightened my outlook on the US PSP lineup. Such a quick release too, amazing.

How well did the GBA version of GTA sell BTW?
If the PSP version of GTA looks like the PS2 versions (mostly talking 3D graphics + viewpoint here), I wonder how consumers will see it? Will they brush it off as "it's not the same, since it's on a handheld" or will they completely eat it up as a new GTA release?

what else did Rockstar Leeds work on?

It's probably better than having Vicarious Visions do a port á la GTA advance I guess... perhaps this is their handheld devoted team.

It's now settled that Spring should be a good time for PSP. Ball. Nintendo's court.

I'm not up to date on this whole Rockstar thing, so could someone tell me if Rockstar North (who's working on GTA PSP) were previously DMA Design who made GTA1-3, VC and SA? Thanks.

Rockstar North was DMA Design, but Rockstar Leeds is actually developing GTA PSP. Leeds used to be Mobius Entertainment, they're an excellent team that Rockstar aquired specifically for handheld R&D.

I saw this posted at the OA; probably a joke, but...

Psp = $129 Us + Gta At Launch, exclusive

Supposedly it's GTA3 with extras like multiplayer and stuff from Vice City / San Andreas.

I'm not sure if the $129 price is just the stand alone system or a bundle, but i'm assuming that's just for the PSP by itself.

I've 100% confirmed this, the internet is about to explode.

You heard it here first!

Oh wait, so when they said:

They meant that Rockstar Leeds is working on both games, and they're working in conjunction with Rockstar San Diego for Midnight Club 3 and they're working in conjunction with Rockstar North for GTA right? I think I misread it the first time. ^^;

A GTA title near the launch of the PSP? Nice feather in the cap there.....

It'll be quite humorous if Sony decides to announce the PSP price, whatever it may be, 2 weeks(1 1/2 weeks???) from now.

I hope the PSP is $129.99. That means I can buy it for $100 or less. $150 and more is ridiculous to spend on a handheld.

Holy shit. Not that I didn't expect it, but man, my penis grows harder for the PSP with each passing day, and frankly, I've got a very, very fucking hard penis.

Though the PSP is a sexy and classy gal treating her like a whore will get you no where. Come my friend, I can teach you some quality pick up lines to dazzle that young portable system of yours.

Yep. San Diego and North are likely in mostly advisory roles, while Leeds makes the games. :)

As for the price.. well, Sony are planning to announce the US and European PSP launch details simultaneously, and Nintendo have yet to announce European DS launch details, and both NOE and Sony are waiting for the other to go first before they completely finalise both their European launches.. so I don't really know when it will be announced right now. One of them will have to announce something eventually.

I am 100% sure though, that PSP will launch at less than $150 in the US, 99% sure it will be $129 in some form. I'm going to guess the standalone system will be $129 with some kind of bundle at $149. There are talks of reconsidering the $129 though because they don't want it to seem "inferior" to the DS, but these talks are from insignificants who don't really have a say.

There is no exact launch date set in stone, however. A Europe delay is possible if they feel they need to, since they might have trouble with production since they actually want to have as many at the US launch as they can.

Sony have a shot at taking away the only area Nintendo are dominating, and they know they have to go all out, and that's exactly what they're doing.

There may be even more surprises though.

;)

This is pretty funny. Before the PSP was launched in Japan, people were "certain" that the PSP will be $300+ at least. So after Sony owned everyone with the 19800yen price, now before the PSP launch in the US, now people are "certain" that the PSP will be $150 or less. We'll see how this pans out. :lol

duck, after being proven wrong, one can set their expectations high enough so that they are garunteed to be disappointed and shock the world later with numerous "I was expecting a lower price" posts

guys think about it for a second

if i came in and said "OMG XBOX 2 115 DOLLARS WITH HALO 3 AT LAUNCH" and then halo 3 was announced for the xbox 2 launch, would that make me right? or a lucky guesser?

How can guessing that sonys biggest franchise is coming out on their new system confirm anything? shouldnt this have been obvious from the beginning?

Well the $300 + price was a result of people not assuming Sony would take such a ridiculous hit in price in order to sell the system (in retrospect, they absolutely had to). Congrats to Sony but that was a ballsy move that not many people thought would be that feasible.

Now considering how serious they are in selling this machine (yay for us!) I won't put a dramatic $130 price out the realm of possibility no matter how small a chance it is. I personally think $150 will be the absolute lowest they will go but what do I know, Sony's determination is something I can't evaluate. If Sony really wants to completely and utterly dominate the market without question, pricing the system at such a ridiculously cheap price and having a strong lineup is definitely the way to go.

Ok this is 100% official and you heard it here first.

PS3 at 200 bucks. Launch games: Tekken Tag Generations and Ridge Racer VI.

:lol :lol :lol

That it was coming was certain.

But so close to launch?

That makes it a 'killer app' if not THE killer app since GTA is the biggest selling franchise this generation.

He did say that "Supposedly it's GTA3 with extras like multiplayer and stuff from Vice City / San Andreas." which goes along well with the game being set in Liberty City. And how many actually expected another GTA game to be released so soon after GTA:SA?

But yeah, it feels more like wishful thinking still. :P

I was hoping for a proper 2D GTA (like it was supposed to be on the GBA), but it'll probably be a cheap port with some new cut 'n pasted environements.

That GTA was coming on PSP is no big surprise. That it's coming so soon is a major surprise! GTA sold a lot of PS2's and it'll sell a lot of PSP's too. Can't wait to see some screenshots, and I'm intrested in seeing how they handled the graphics pop-in and number of cars/people on the screen. I remember seeing an interview with someone at Rockstar who said that the PSP's limited memory might make it difficult to create a GTA game on the PSP.

Doesn't the PSP have the same amount of memory as the PS2?

At least change your posts a little when you bring them over to TNL, you unoriginal bastard.

Do you want me to compare you to isamu? Is that what you want?
